Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) apply information and communication technologies to transportation infrastructure and vehicles to improve safety, productivity, and environmental performance. ITS includes applications like traffic management systems and vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-vehicle communication systems. ITS empower all actors in the transportation system with actionable information to make better decisions regarding routing, travel times, and transportation options. The major technological aspects of ITS include various wireless communication methods, computational technologies in vehicles and infrastructure, and sensing technologies to collect vehicle and infrastructure data. ITS provides benefits like increased safety, reduced congestion, enhanced mobility and convenience, environmental benefits, and economic and employment growth.

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)

Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) cover any technology applied to transport and infrastructure to transfer information
between systems for improved safety, productivity and environmental performance. This includes stand-alone
applications such as traffic management systems, improve economic performance, information and warning systems
installed in individual vehicles, as well as cooperative ITS (C-ITS) applications involving vehicle to infrastructure and
vehicle to vehicle communications. Many think improving a countrys transportation system solely means building new
roads or repairing aging infrastructure. But the future of transportation lies not only in concrete and steel, but also in the
implementation of technology, specifically a network of sensors, microchips, and communication devices that collect and
disseminate information about the functioning of the transportation system. Transportation systems are really about
networks, and much of the value of a network is contained in its information: For example, whether a traffic signal
knows there is traffic waiting to pass through an intersection; whether a vehicle is drifting out of its lane; whether two
vehicles are likely to collide at an intersection; whether a roadway is congested with traffic; what the true cost of
operating a roadway is, etc. What intelligent transportation systems do is empower actors in the transportation system
from commuters, to highway and transit network operators, even down to the actual traffic lights themselveswith
actionable information (or, intelligence) to make better-informed decisions, whether its choosing which route to take;
when to travel; whether to mode-shift (take mass transit instead of driving); how to optimize traffic signals; where to build
new roadways; what the true cost of roadways are and how best to price their use; or how to hold providers of
transportation services accountable for results. The big opportunity at hand is to bring information to bear on
transportation networks, transforming them into truly intelligent transportation systems.
Some of the major technological constituents of ITS are:
Various forms of wireless communication for both shortrange and long-range data exchange
(UHF, VHF, WiMAX, GSM, etc.);
Computational technologies the present trend is towards
fewer and more costly microprocessors, allowing for more
sophisticated applications such as model-based process
control and artificial intelligence;
Sensing technology employing sensors to feed control
systems with both vehicle-based data (from devices such as
radar, RFID readers, infrared- and visible-band cameras) and
Infrastructure-based data (from similar devices, as well as
inductive or pressure sensors installed or embedded in and
around the road).
Benefits of Intelligent Transportation Systems:
Applying information technology to a countrys transportation network delivers five key classes of benefits by:
1) Increasing driver and pedestrian safety, 2) Improving the operational performance of the transportation network,
particularly by reducing congestion, 3) Enhancing personal mobility and convenience, 4) Delivering environmental
benefits, 5) Boosting productivity and expanding economic and employment growth, 6) Advanced traveler information
systems, 7) Advanced transportation management systems, 8) ITS-Enabled transportation pricing systems, 9) Advanced
public transportation systems, 10) Vehicle-to-infrastructure Integration (VII) and Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) Integration
A new family of technologically advanced approaches - Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) - is emerging to address
many of today's traffic challenges. ITS applies information and communication technologies to traffic problems and is
part of the global spread of Information Technology (IT). During the past ten years, countries around the world have
begun to employ a new set of approaches and technologies to meet the challenges of surface transportation. In addition,
the introduction of ITS applications in developing countries has contributed to the mitigation of many traffic problems.
There are, however, numerous traffic challenges remaining that can benefit from the application of ITS.
