MATHILLO MAILUN KHOLA

JALVIDHYUT LIMITED

INTRODUCTION
Nepal, one of the richest country in the world in water resources has
huge hydropower potential from the Himalayan Rivers. Due to the
fact that the efforts from the government only will not be sufficient,
an open and free policy has been adopted for expediting hydropower
development with private sector investment. In this context, Mathillo
Mailun Khola Jalvidhydyut Limited (MMKHL) is going to construct
and operate 14.3 MW Mathillo Mailun Khola Hydropower Project
which is situated at Rasuwa District, Bagmati zone, Central
Development region.
The project area lies in between Dadagaun and Haku VDC of
Rasuwa District. The power generated from the project will be
evacuated at Upper Trishuli 3B Hydropower Project Hub.
VISION
Public Private Participation (PPP) model will be augmented to build
the hydropower projects in Nepal using the maximum local
manpower, materials and money to generate Hydropower to benefit
the local people as well as the Nation at large.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Mailun Khola is a snow-fed river originated from the Ganesh himal
with the dependable low flows and manageable high flood and less
flow variation. Approximately 7 km long access road has to be
constructed to reach upto the powerhouse site. Most of the land
required for the project is bushy and barren with few cultivated land
for the access road. Sufficient area is available for the construction of
headworks. Weir with crest elevation 2050.5 amsl will be 20m long
and an undersluice of 2m width will be provided. The design of
Intake will be of 4 cumecs capacity using 2 openings each 2m wide.
The connecting canal of length 26m having, 2m width and 2m height
will be constructed. The canal includes 4 m long Gravel Trap of size
2m width and 2m height. The design discharge passes through 55m
long desilting basin of 5.5 m width and 4.5 m deep. The 12m long
Headpond of the size 8m wide and 4 m deep to protect the air going
through the siphon and headrace tunnel will be provided. The clear

water from the Raman Khola, small tributary of Mailun having 12

sqkm catchment area will be added.
Siphon works is needed to connect the Headpond to the headrace
tunnel of length 1855m and finished diameter of 2.4m, which is
constructed in a very sound geology resulting the smooth
construction of the tunnel. Adit almost at the middle of HRT will be
provided to expedite the construction works. The water will be stored
in a 15m long forebay using 6m wide and 9m deep to minimize the
surge and protect the penstock from air entering in it. There is a small
stream near the location of the forebay to spill water during load
rejection
The 3.53 cumecs design discharge flows through the 775 m long
penstock, with an average diameter of 1.2m and thickness ranges
from 14-32 mm.The design flow from the penstock pipe hits the 2
horizontal axis pelton turbine in the surface powerhouse located at
the right bank of the Raman Khola and generates 14.3 MW power
with the help of 2 units of 3 phase synchronous AC generator of
capacity 8.4 MVA each (0.85 power factor).
Generation of 14.3 MW at the powerhouse site is transmitted through
the 15 km long 132kv transmission line to the switching hub of
Trishuli-3B. After the generation of power the water flows back to
Mailun khola through the 35m long Tailrace using a canal of size
1.2m width and 1.5m height.
