Hunger and Appetite

This document defines and compares hunger and appetite. Hunger is a physical need for food triggered by low blood sugar and controlled by the hypothalamus, causing symptoms like stomach growling. Appetite is a psychological desire for food stimulated by the sight and smell of food. Both hunger and appetite can be influenced by psychological and social factors. The document also briefly discusses eating disorders like anorexia, bulimia, and obesity as well as how culture, memories, and taste aversions can impact hunger and appetite.

Psychology In Hunger

HUNGER AND APPETITE

HUNGER is the need for food. It is a
physical reaction that includes chemical

changes in your body related to a naturally

low level of glucose in your blood several
hours after eating.

APPETITE is the desire for food. It is a

sensory or psychological reaction that
stimulates an involuntary physiological
response (salivation, stomach contractions).

HUNGER
Stomach rumbling at first = HUNGER
PANGS = Contraction of stomach walls
Caused by low blood sugar levels and
hormone changes that prompt us to eat.
Extreme hunger cause fatigue,
lightheadedness, weakness, the shakes, or
irritability.

HUNGER
Controlled by hypothalamus:
Lateral hypothalamus - causes you to feel
hungry
Ventromedial hypothalamus - makes you feel
full

If the hypothalamus is functioning

normally, these two areas oppose each
other and signal impulses to eat and
stop eating at appropriate times.

APPETITE
Stimulated by the sight, smell, or thought
of food and associated with memory and
perception = conditioned response to food
Sometimes it is triggered by hunger, but
many times its due to cravings, habits, the
availability of food, boredom, or other social
and emotional factors.
Stomach secreted Ghrelin, the hunger
hormone which sends a message to receptors
in your brain, telling them to be more
receptive to foods visual cues.

APPETITE

COMPARE COMBO
HUNGER
An instinctive,
protective mechanism
that makes sure that
your body gets the
fuel.
Physiologically aroused.

APPETITE

A conditioned response
to food.
Psychologically dependent

Bulimia -

ILLNESS

Eat large amounts of food in a short

period of time (binging) and then get rid of the food
(purging) by vomiting, excessive exercise or the use of
laxatives.

Anorexia -

Starve themselves to below 85% of their

normal body weight and refuse to eat due to their
obsession with weight.

Obesity -

Severely overweight and the excess weight

threatens their health. Typically have unhealthy eating
habits rather than the food obsessions of the other two
disorders. Some people may also be genetically
predisposed to obesity.

PSYCHOLOGY IN HUNGER AND

APPETITE

Hunger is not, of course, entirely a physical

process.
Culture and individually learned preferences
and eating habits affect our food choices, e.g
Durian.
Our culture and upbringing also provide us
with various beliefs and attitudes about food
and eating in general, and our personal
memories can influence our eating behaviors
as well.

PSYCHOLOGY IN HUNGER AND

APPETITE
Eating is a social thing in human beings and
can give one a sense of love and belonging.
E.g chocolate and ice cream as stress
reliever.
TASTE AVERSION: If we get sick soon
after eating something, we can develop a
instant dislike for that food for the rest of
our lives.
