HOW TO INTERROGATE THE DATA,THE INFORMATION AND THE CONTEXT

PRESENTED BY

Prof Bharat N. Anand

Henry R. Byers Professor of Business Administration in the


Strategy Unit at Harvard Business School
Bharat N. Anand currently teaches and heads the first year Strategy course,
and co-chairs the schools executive education program on media strategies.
He received an AB in Economics, magna cum laude , from Harvard University,
and his PhD in Economics from Princeton University. At Princeton, he was
nominated to the Princeton Society of Fellows.
Professor Anands research is in applied and empirical industrial
organization, and corporate strategy.

PRESENTERS

His current research examines competition in information goods markets,


with a primary focus on media and entertainment. His research focuses
on two central strategic challenges that firms face in these markets. The
first is the challenge of getting noticed amongst the increasing clutter
of alternatives that are widely available to consumers. The second is the
challenge that firms face in getting paid for what they produce, since
property rights over inputs and outputs are often difficult to establish in
these markets.
To understand how firms respond to the challenge of getting noticed,
Professor Anands recent papers employ novel datasets and empirical
methods to shed light on the roles of branding and advertising as vehicles
of matching and information rather than instruments of persuasion and
shaping tastes. His case-based research explores the consequences of these
findings for business and corporate strategy, including vertical integration
and media conglomeration. In ongoing work, he has examined competition
between specialist financiers versus corporations in markets for talent, the
industrial organization of the media and implications for bias in the media,
and why media conglomerates exist.
Professor Anand has also written several papers on strategies that firms
employ to tackle the challenge of getting paid when property rights over
assets are weak or insecure. In many sectors, property rights over knowledge
and information are weak as they are embodied in employees, competitors
can copy, or customers can pirate. In his research, he has examined how
firms capture value in these settings. His work examines the financing of
R&D, the structure of technology licensing contracts, and the industrial
organization of financial intermediation markets.
His work on strategic alliances provided the intellectual platform for
Andersen Consultings Partnership Value Assessment methodology for the
valuation of such alliances. His work has been published in various journals
in economics and strategy, and he has written numerous case studies.
At Harvard, Anand has also taught the second-year elective course in
Corporate Strategy, for which he received the Faculty Award for Teaching
Excellence from the MBA class of 2006 and the MBA class of 2007, and in
several executive education programs. Prior to coming to HBS, he was on
the faculty at the Yale School of Management.
Anand lives in Wellesley, MA with his wife, Anju, who is a cardiologist, and
their daughter Rhea.

Felix Oberholzer-Gee is a member of the faculty since 2003, Professor


Oberholzer-Gee received his Masters degree, summa cum laude, and his
Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Zurich. His first faculty position
was at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He currently
teaches competitive strategy in executive education programs such as the

Program for Leadership Development, the Senior Executive Program for


China, and in a program for media executives titled Effective Strategies for
Media Companies. His course Strategies Beyond the Market is a popular
elective class for second-year MBA students. Professor Oberholzer-Gee
won numerous awards for excellence in teaching, including the Harvard
Business School Class of 2006 Faculty Teaching Award for best teacher
in the core curriculum, and the 2002 Helen Kardon Moss Anvil Award for
best teacher in the Wharton MBA program. Prior to his academic career,
Professor Oberholzer-Gee served as managing director of Symo Electronics,
a Swiss-based process control company.
Professor Oberholzer-Gees research and consulting are centered on
competitive strategy, international competition, and non-market strategy,
a branch of strategic management that studies how companies best
work with government and non-governmental groups. In recent work, he
studied how entertainment companies can successfully manage the digital
transition. Dating back to a study abroad program as an undergraduate,
Professor Oberholzer-Gee has a long-standing interest in the Chinese
economy and Chinese companies. In recent academic work, he compared
the financial performance of Chinese companies with the performance of
multinationals operating in China. In a related study, he explored how and
why Chinese companies diversify their activities. Professor OberholzerGees academic work has been published in the very best, peer-reviewed
journals of his profession, including the American Economic Review, Journal
of Political Economy, Journal of Financial Economics, and Journal of Law &
Economics. His work has been profiled by media outlets around the world,
including ABC Nightly News, Financial Times, Guardian, Le Figaro, Neue
Zrcher Zeitung, New York Times, Singapore Straits Times, Sddeutsche
Zeitung, Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post.

Dr Bertie du Plessis - He has been a lecturer or guest lecturer at tertiary
institutions in disciplines ranging from Ancient Greek, to Fine Art, Graphic
Design, Afrikaans & Dutch Literature and Business Administration. He
is on contract to Naspers to create content, processes and structures
that will help Naspers adapt and survive in the fast and continuously
changing digital economy.

We have refreshed the Case Studies Program and will
supplement the case studies with keynote presentations on general management and personal development themes. Some of the case studies go back some
years. They are selected because of the interest in the
decision(s) that had to be taken at that time, in the
same way that we study historical battles in military
history. We learn from the past!

WHO IS THE TARGET AUDIENCE?

related to e-commerce, because we need universal understanding of the issues line managers
deal with.
