Seabed Model Data Sheet

This document provides an overview of modeling heat transfer in a subsea natural gas pipeline using FluidFlow3 software. It summarizes the results of FluidFlow3 compared to an older program called Gas/dp. The pipeline is modeled in three sections, with inlet conditions of 6 million cubic meters per day flow rate at 70 bar pressure and 80C temperature. FluidFlow3 results for outlet temperature, density, pressure, and velocity closely match those of Gas/dp. Graphs show the density and velocity profiles along the 100km buried pipeline.

Example: Sub-sea Natural Gas Pipe Heat Transfer

This example is one of many FluidFlow3 verification examples. This particular system was previously
modelled using the Gas/dp program which was widely accepted as producing results with a high
degree of accuracy. The Gas/dp program is however no longer in production/available.
This datasheet provides an overview of the results as calculated by both FluidFlow3 and Gas/dp.
System Design Data:
Volumetric Flow Rate:
Upstream Pressure:
Upstream Temperature:

6000000 m3/day.
70 Bar a.
80oC.

The design gas composition is as set out in Table 1 below. Figure 1 illustrates this data as entered into
FluidFlow3. It is worth noting at this point that FluidFlow3 allows the user to define any gas by either
mole % or weight %.

System Results:
It can be seen from table 3 below that the results calculated by the Gas/dp program compare
favourably to that of FluidFlow3.

Figures 2 & 3 provide an illustration of the Density and Velocity profile as the gas flows along the
length of the 100km buried pipeline.

Figure 2 Profile of Density results for 100km

pipeline.

Figure 3 Profile of gas velocity results for

100km pipeline.

The above graphs provide a classic representation of a density and velocity profile along a gas pipeline.
Note, how the gas velocity decreases initially as the gas cools before it then increases as the gas
expands along the pipeline.
