Colors lesson
Marisela Rodriguez
Preschool
Lesson Summary:
During this lesson the children will use QR codes to learn different colors. The children will be handed a piece
of paper that has all the 10 colors that they will be working on. Each color will have a QR code which will take
them to a video in Youtube which is about the color they selected. Then the children will be doing a color
scavenger hunt using QR codes. The QR codes will be placed in different items throughtout the classroom.
Each item will be a different color. The QR code found on the items will take them to the viki webpage a vatar
is created to say the name of the color they had found. They will check their answers by checking the QR code.
This lesson will help children identify common colors and they will also learn how to use QR codes.
Estimated Duration:
The lesson will be broken into 20 min sessions. Each session will focus on two specific color. (Red, blue, pink,
purple, yellow, brown, orange, black, white, green. The sessions can go longer than 20 min depending on
childrens interest and can also move on to a different color on the same day if children are focused in the
activity.
Commentary:
I plan on getting the children interested by showing them the tools that we will be using for example
cellphones, ipads, and the computer. I can see how children will be very interested in using cellphones and
ipads specially since most children see their parents or adults use them. During this activity they will actually
be using them all by themselves. I will also show them how to use a QR code I will scan one QR code that
takes us to a youtube video about all the colors. I will explain to them that we will be learning all the colors
using QR codes, videos and avatars.
Instructional Procedures:
Day 1 (Monday): Two colors ex. (Red and Blue)
First 3 min I will explain to children the roles and directions of the activity. I will also show them how to use
the device to scan the QR code. They will either use a cell phone, ipad, or a computer all of these tools will
have the QR scanner app downloaded.
The children will then receive a piece of paper that has all the colors and the QR codes. The children will
choose a color they want to study by scanning the QR code thats inside the colorful circles found on the piece
of paper. Each color has a video that runs from 1min to 4 mins. To be safe 5 min to watch the video.
After the children finish watching a video the teacher will be ready to hand them the scavenger hunt
worksheet.
The scavenger hunt will can take from 5-10 min depending on how long the child takes to find the color she/he
is searching.
After the children found the item of the color they were searching for they will either scan the QR code in the
same spot they found the item or they can take the QR code and scan it at the computer.
2-4 min to write the name of the color they found in the worksheet, scan the QR code, and watch the Avatar
speak to check their answer.
The children will do the same steps to do the next color. Approximately another 10 minutes to study the next
color, find it, and write the answers on their worksheet.
The children will check off the color they selected and learned about on the first day, They will continue to
work on the next color the following day. They will check off the colors in the worksheet only.
Day 2 (Tuesday): Next 2 colors ex. (White and Pink)
The children will receive the piece of paper they received on day 1 and they will also get back the worksheet
they worked on. For this day they will select two other colors.
The children will take the same about of time(2O min) to watch the videos and do the scavenger hunt for the
two other colors they chose to work on.
Day 3 (Wednesday): Next 2 colors ex. (Orange and Purple)
The children will receive the piece of paper that has all the colors and QR codes and they will also get back the
worksheet they worked on. For this day they will select two other colors.
The children will take the same about of time (2O min) to watch the videos and do the scavenger hunt for the
two other colors they chosen.
Day 4 (Thursday) Next 2 colors ex. (Green and Black)
The children will receive the piece of paper that has all the colors and QR codes and they will also get back the
worksheet they been working on. For this day they will select two other colors.
The children will take the same about of time (2O min) to watch the videos and do the scavenger hunt for the
two other colors they chosen.
Day 5 (Friday): Last 2 colors ex. ( Brown and Yellow)
The children will receive the piece of paper that has all the colors and QR codes and they will also get back the
worksheet they been working on. For this day they will select the last two colors.
The children will take the same about of time (2O min) to watch the videos and do the scavenger hunt for the
remaining colors.
Pre-Assessment:
Before setting the children up for this activity they would have to show that they have background knowledge
of the names of common colors. Also they would have to show that they have writing skills to copy letters into
a piece of paper. A strategy I would use to determine this would be to read a book about the different colors a
rainbow has for ex. What makes a rainbow? by Betty Ann Schwartz. The children will practice writing their
names on their work of art and practice writing their names on sing up sheets to save their spot for a specific
area they want to be in.
Scoring Guidelines:
For the color recognition a checklist can be created to check off if we the teacher have at least
mentioned all the colors and asked each child to name a color either during group time while reading a
book or during free play. Teacher can ask What color is the ball you are holding? Can you tell me
what color this is?. The writing skills be based on teachers judgment based on the observed writings
of children and the coping of letters. Teachers can take individual time with children who struggle to
write their names. Both of these will be assessed by conducting observations during free play. The
teacher will have a checklist for the colors and the childs writing skills will be noted on the same piece
on the paper.
Post-Assessment:
After the lesson about colors the children will be doing a matching game of the colors. Each child will be
asked to play the matching game. The matching game will have the same colors used on the lesson the week
before. There will be pictures of items of different colors in a bag and there will be laminated pieces of paper
will the words of each color. The children will need to match the picture of the item with the name of the color.
Scoring Guidelines:
The children will be graded by doing this matching game. Teacher will see how many matches each
child gets after the game. This game involves two things word recognition and color recognition.
Extension
Since the children are too young to surf the internet, I thought about a cool way to do an extension of using QR
codes, by getting more QR codes and setting them all over the classroom. The children can look up these QR
codes during free play. QR codes can take children into videos taken from the classroom and also take children
into a slideshow of pictures using EVERNOTE app.
Home Connections
After the lesson is over parents can take the materials of the scavenger hunt and they can do the activity with
their children at home. It will be fun for parents to find a good place for the QR codes all over their home, and
it will be fun for children to find them at a different setting. It can be fun for the whole family.
Computer, smart-phones, 3 pieces of paper (Paper with all colors and QR codes, paper
with all the QR codes that will be posted all over the classroom, Worksheet paper with
the list of colors the children will be searching), Matching game, and all the apps (Viki,
google url shortener,tubechop.

markers and matching game.

black, pink, green, blue.
Additional Notes
It was very hard to find a lesson that allows children this young to use technology. I couldnt find many ideas
out there so I thought using QR codes was a cool idea for this age group. This assignment really made me to
think outside the box which turned out to be a good learning experience.
