System Benefits:
Provides advanced warning
of any deterioration in
swivel function
Easy to interpret displays
Alarms generated in the

safe limits
Enables preventative
maintenance to take place
Can be installed on all types
of weathervaning FPSOs
Swivels are a critical part of a weathervaning FPSO, and its failure can lead to
significant spill and considerable down time while spare parts are sourced and fitted.
A Strainstall swivel monitoring system provides details of the levels of force or
resistance to movement in the swivel, and the monitoring of these trends and
absolute levels can provide early warning of potential breakdown, so that orderly
consultation with vendors and planned preventative maintenance can take place.
Details of two such swivel monitoring projects are outlined below.
FPSO Kikeh - Malaysian Deepwater Production Contractors
The failure of the gas swivel meant that the vessel had to shut down for a period while a
replacement swivel was manufactured and fitted. As a preventative measure, the new
swivel was fitted with two Strainstall load pins in the joint between the swivel body and
driving arms. These were wired via waterproof connectors and armoured cables to a
local amplifier junction box. Load signals were then cabled down the turret to a nearby
instrumentation closure where the signals were connected via isolators to spare
analogue inputs to the vessels DCS system. A new graphical display, trends and
alarms were set up within the DCS to provide early warning of increased loads in the
swivel.
Helix Producer 1 - Flexible Engineering Solutions
When Helix took over the field in the Gulf of Mexico that had previously been operated
by Chevron using the ill-fated Typhoon TLP, they took an innovative approach. The
solution was the first dynamically positioned production vessel based on a converted
ferry. The turret was mounted on the side and is detachable to allow the vessel to cut
and run if threatened by a hurricane. Flexible Engineering Solutions was contracted
to supply one of the disconnectable fluid transfer systems that, in addition to using a
Strainstall bearing load monitoring system, also had monitoring on all 11 swivels. In
this application, the single shear pins were mounted at the interface between the
driving arm and the structure, which all wired into an amplifier enclosure and on to the
turret control system.
