This document provides instructions for securely browsing the internet using the I2P anonymous network with Firefox and the FoxyProxy addon. It explains how to download and configure FoxyProxy to set up an I2P proxy and route traffic through it. HOWTO: Browsing securely, using i2p with


Firefox and FoxyProxy

Ive been using i2p for a few things, including


browsing and keeping my online research for new business ventures out of the
prying eyes of my local Internet providers.
Typically this means using a web browser of some sort to access content on
the i2p networks (information that certain restrictive governments would
prefer not be made available to the public at large), but it could also mean
using an IM client, irc, or other tools to get to resources across the Internet in
a secure fashion as well.
You can congure your browser manually to use the i2p proxy settings
(127.0.0.1:4444 by default), or if youre using FireFox, you can use an add-on
by Eric Jung called FoxyProxy to congure those URLs for you.
Heres how! (click the images below for full-size versions)
1. Download and install FoxyProxy. Firefox needs to be restarted after you
add this.
2. When Firefox comes back up, youll see a new item in your status bar that
looks like this:

3. Left-click the word FoxyProxy in your status bar to bring up the


FoxyProxy conguration dialog, which should look something like this:

4. Click on Add New Proxy on the left side. I called mine i2p Proxy
(how imaginative!), and set it up like this:

5. The important items are to make sure that your Host or IP


Address does not have http:// in it, and that you do not enable the
SOCKS proxy? boxes. Save that conguration and exit back to your
browser.
6. Right-click on FoxyProxy: Default in the status bar. You should see
a menu similar to this:

7. If you wanted to use i2p for ALL urls, you could select it from the i2p
Proxy -> Use proxy "i2p Proxy" for all URLs" option, but
were not going to do that right now.
8. Choose the Use proxies based on their pre-defined patterns
and priorities option at the top of this menu (the orange part in the
image above).
Now when youre browsing normally, youll fall through to the Default
proxy (none). When you reach an i2p UR such as sponge.i2p, it will pass into
the i2p proxy weve set up. it should be seamless. In the screenshots above, I
also have Tor and Privoxy congured. If I was browsing and reached an
onion URL, it would pass through to the Tor proxy.
You CAN use i2p for all browsing, if you wish, itll just be a lot slower, as it
crawls through the i2p network to service your request rst. Likewise for using
Tor, but security and true anonymity comes at a cost. In this case, the cost is a
little bit of latency and performance.

Outproxy Terms Of Service


Remember: I2P was not designed for creating proxies to the outer Internet.
Instead, it is meant to be used as an internal network.

The I2P project itself does not run any proxies to the Internet.
Any such proxy services are run by by private volunteers and
could be shut down or unreachable at anytime.
By default, I2P comes with two outproxies congured: false.i2p (an
HTTP-only proxy) and outproxyng.h2ik.i2p (an HTTPS proxy routed
through Tor.
Both of these outproxies are congured with connection limits. This means
that only set amount of accesses are allowed per client. Once the limit is
reached, the client is blocked out for a timeframe of 1min/1h/1 day. Be
respectful and do not overload these services with too many requests!
Filtering is active on these outproxies (for example, mibbit and torrent tracker
access is blocked). Note that even though the pirate bay is blocked they host
an oicial eepsite attpb.i2p. Eepsites that are accessible via .i2p addresses are
also not allowed via the outproxies. As a convenience, False.i2p blocks ad
servers.
Tor is good application to use as an outproxy to the Internet.
