Reading 7.1, "Measuring and Managing For Team Performance: Emerging Principles From Complex Environments"

Individuals working together on a shared task constitute a team. There are two types of teams: tactical decision-making teams, where decisions are made by negotiating with team members, and slower-paced non-emergency teams led by overarching authorities. Research on naval, anti-submarine, and missile teams found they evolve over time and are divided into sub-teams, with more knowledgeable teams at the hub. Teamwork requires members to share tasks and comments, acknowledge messages, support each other, interact, and focus on tasks and subtasks, while the team leader provides feedback and pays attention to members. The organization must support the team and its members for teamwork to benefit the organization.

1, Measuring and Managing for Team Performance:

Emerging principles from complex environments
Abstract:
Individuals with cognitive mind contribute innovative stuffs to form a coalition. This
reading focus on the team unveiling the concepts involved in team work and the
performance related to it. It is difficult to endow with proper definition of team work
and team performance. Many rudimentary researches were conducted on individuals
and group of individuals for finding the behaviour of the team.
More than two individuals focusing on a task constitute a team. Tactical decision
making team and slower paced non emergency decision making team are the two
classifications of team. In case of Tactical decision making team, decisions are
made negotiating with the team members giving importance to the team. This type of
decision making is not entertained in the latter, where the decisions are made by
overarching authorities.
The Team Evolution and Maturation Research Paradigm brings to the fore the
importance of team and the performance of team. Team has its own responsibilities
and to make the responsibilities lucid observations were made on Naval Gunfire
support team, antisubmarine warfare team and guided missile team. These teams
are further divided into number of teams and the team with surplus knowledge is
placed at the hub. The results produced by the research jot down the critical behaviour
of the team, overall performance of the team, individual performance and the
performance of the team leader.
Team work can be defined in different sense. Every member in the team must look
into the tasks and performance of other members in the team, share comments with
others, receive and acknowledge the message from team members, bolster other
members, interact with other members and concentrate on tasks and sub tasks. The
teams performance is mainly attributed to the team leader and to his leadership skills.
Team leader in turn provides feedback to team members and pay attention to them.
The organisation must have good rapport with team and team members as team work
is involved in all facets of the organisation.

Personal Experience:
MBit Wireless private limited is a telecom based Research and development centre
head quartered in USA. I was working in the company as a Development Engineer for
one year. I focused on the software development part and we were working as a team.
Importance was given to individuals in the team. We had discussions daily and we as
an individual were asked to contribute something innovative. We were given chance
to present our research to semi conductor giants. Decisions were made by consulting
with each member in the team. We were allowed to be a part in the decision making.
Our decisions had immediate consequence in case of an error. This is similar to
tactical decision making team as mentioned in this reading. On the other hand, team
leaders gave feedback every week and sat with us in case of an issue leading the team
to accomplish the project milestone.
