Seneca honors seniors at last home game

PTA to host
community night
this Friday

As the weather turns and the
trees empty their leaves, the Tabernacle PTA will fill residents social calendars.
The PTA will host Community
Night on Friday, Nov. 14 beginning at 6 p.m. at Olson Middle
School. The evening begins with
a spaghetti dinner then offers a
variety of activities for both children and parents, including a holiday shop, book fair, cake walk,
countless vendors and even an appearance from Santa Claus. The
community night event has
grown in size compared to previous years. Any event the PTA
holds can count on heavy support
from the districts teachers and
administrators.
We have an amazing relationship with our teachers, our principals and our superintendent,
PTA president Jenn Quartarone
said. They support our functions

Cory Booker (D) defeated Jeff
Bell (R) by a tally of 997,331 votes

75,972 in the third congressional
district election.
In the freeholder election, Republicans Bruce Garganio and
Mary Ann O Brien defeated Democrats Tom Pullion and Michael
Schmidt with 52.55 percent of the
vote.

Board of Education in the wake
of the election held Nov. 4.
Incumbents Stephen Price and
Megan Jones as well as newcomer Kevin McCloy defeated Lorie
Cutts for the three vacant seats on

Price received 885 votes, 24.06
percent, McCloy received 1,026
votes, 27.90 percent, Jones received 878 votes, 23.87 percent,
and Cutts received 876 votes, 23.82

Midterm elections, early exit polls show discontent across the board

t first glance, the early results

of last weeks midterm elections show a nationwide backlash against President Obama and the
Democratic Party.
For the second straight midterm
election, Republicans earned significant victories, this time flipping at
least seven seats in the Senate to their
side. Three incumbent Democratic
senators lost their re-election bids, in
North Carolina, Arkansas and Colorado. Four other states Iowa, Montana, South Dakota and West Virginia also changed party hands from
Democrat to Republican. And results
in Alaska, Virginia and Louisiana are
still out, as of this writing.
The Senate victories now give the
Republicans full control of Congress,
with its majority in the House of Representatives being its largest margin
since World War II. In addition, Republican governors won election or re-

election in key states such as Ohio,

Wisconsin and New Mexico, in Maryland a traditionally Democratic
state and in Illinois, Obamas home
state.
Data such as this would make one
think that voters are unhappy with the
performance and direction of the
White House. And thats probably accurate. Early exit polls found that
Obamas approval rating is down 10
points versus 2012, and more voters
said they were voting to show opposition to Obama (34 percent) rather than
support for him (20 percent). More
people also have an unfavorable view
of the Democratic Party than a favor-

able view (53 percent to 44 percent).

But even more people have a negative view of the Republican Party (56
percent) than a positive view (40 percent).
So what gives? Voters made a statement directly to Obama with the
midterm elections; they seemed to
vote against Obama instead of for the
Republicans. Republican supporters
could spin that to say its not true;
Democratic supporters could say
things will change in two years when
Obamas out.
In the meantime, we can all expect
two more years of jarring in D.C. with
not much getting done, since the Republicans in Congress will most likely
clash with Obama in the White House.
Voters are not happy, but who are
they most unhappy with? Thats something the prognosticators will debate
heavily for the next two years, before
the next big national election in 2016.

The event will be the first of its
kind in the township and, yes, Mr.
Claus will continue to make his
way through Tabernacle as he is
scheduled to make an appearance
at the tree lighting as well.
Teacher involvement in the
PTAs January event will require
more than just a time commitment. It will also require the ability to ball.
Were excited to bring in show
basketball team, the Harlem Wizards, again this year. The Wizards
will be playing a team made up of
teachers from throughout the
Seneca sending district, which
should be a lot of fun, Quartarone said.
The Harlem Wizards are a professional entertainment basketball team similar to the Harlem
Globetrotters in that they bring a
combination of basketball skill
and fun for the audience.
The fundraising events allow

the PTA to support several initiatives for students in both Olson

Middle School and Tabernacle Elementary School.
Were able to have authors
visit the schools and do readings.
We purchased new curtains for
the stages in both auditoriums.
The carnival we throw at the end
of year for TES are all possible
because of the events sponsors,
Quartarone said.
In addition to support from the
districts employees, Quartarone
said the PTA can always count on
Tabernacle as a community to
support its schools.
Tabernacle is amazing as a
community in how supportive
they are and how proud they are
of the education their kids receive, Quartarone said.
The Harlem Wizards event will
take place at Seneca High School
on Jan. 26. Advance tickets will be
available in early December. For
