Mix Design Program

Congratulations on your purchase of the Asphalt Institute Mix Design Program! We believe this tool
will help you more efficiently design asphalt mixtures. The Asphalt Institute Mix Design Program
(AIMD) is structured for Superpave and Marshall mix design procedures. Many other programs exist
that in essence perform the same basic functions as AIMD. However, many of the programs available
on the market today are very rigid and cumbersome in structure and do not allow the user to modify the
program to their individual needs. The AIMD is an Excel based program that is password protected to
prevent the user from accidentally erasing or modifying the program. The worksheet password is
AIMD and is only available on workbooks that are duplicated through the Utility function discussed
in this manual. This program was written in strict conformance to the Asphalt Institute SP-2 and MS-2
manuals and test procedures utilized in our research laboratory in Lexington, Kentucky. Many users
will find that they use different test methods, sieve sizes or specifications. Therefore, the password to all
of the individual worksheets has been given to you to maximize your ability to modify the program to
meet your requirements. Caution however, must be advised. AIMD contains a tremendous amount of
formats, links and equations. Modification of this program should only be done on duplicated templates
as shown under the Main User Screen section of this manual. We also advise that modifications be
made by knowledgeable designers and those who are proficient in Excel programming.

Main User Screen

The screen shot shown above is the main screen used to access new or completed mix design files. The
program contains the 4 New Workbooks shown. A brief description of each workbook is shown in the
lower portion of the main user screen. Select the workbook of choice and click the Open button. When
the new workbook is opened, the program will as you for a new file name. This should be a unique name
for each project or design.

The new workbook will be automatically saved under this filename and will appear later under the
Existing Workbooks section as shown on the main user screen.
The 4 - New Workbooks shown are blank workbooks ready for new project information. They may also
be viewed with sample data already loaded into the program by clicking on the with sample data box
shown on the main user screen.
To close the workbook, after entering data, click on either of the two X boxes located in the upper
right-hand corner of the worksheet.

The file will be automatically saved under the name previously designated when the blank workbook
was opened. All project workbooks must be accessed through this program and will not appear on the
hard drive of your computer. The newly saved workbooks will appear under the Existing Workbooks
section in the order they were saved. Clicking on the By Name button will sort the files
alphabetically. After the data files have been sorted by name, a By Date button will replace the By
Name button and sort the files by the date they were saved.
The Utility menu button contains two options. The Compact Database option will reorganize the
existing workbooks that have been moved or deleted and will make the program function better after the
program has been utilized for a period of time. The Duplicate and Modify Template function will allow
the user to modify a blank template to conform to the users needs and save it with a new, unique name
under the New Workbooks section.

Superpave Trial Blending Program

The Superpave Trial Blending program is a combination of ten Excel worksheets in one Workbook.
This program conforms to Asphalt Institute Manual Series SP-2 and will assist you in performing a
Superpave Mix Design analysis for up to 5 different aggregate gradation combinations at one asphalt
content. This program will calculate estimated mix cost and is very helpful when dealing with unknown
aggregate sources

Worksheet 1 - Cover Sheet

Worksheet 1 Cover Sheet

All Asphalt Institute Mix Design (AIMD) worksheets contain areas in yellow for data entry on. The
program will allow up to ten different aggregates for use in trial blending. Simply enter a description for
the aggregate material and cost. This information will be transferred to many other areas in the
Workbook. If all material costs are not known leave the fields blank. Using only some of the data will
result in mixture costs that are in error.

The Print Worksheet button appears on all AIMD worksheets. This function will select a predetermined
range of the worksheet and pop up a print dialogue box.

Click the selection button to print the selected range. Click the preview button to view the print out
prior to printing. Click OK to print the page. These rules apply to all AIMD worksheets.

Worksheet 2 - Aggregate Materials Data

The Aggregate Materials Data worksheet is where aggregate gradations and characteristics are entered
into the program.
The first step is to enter the nominal maximum aggregate size of the mixture. This will determine the
appropriate 45th power chart, control points and volumetric requirements on other sheets in the
workbook.
Enter the project 20 yr. design esals and depth to the surface of the mix to determine the gyratory levels
and aggregate specifications.
Enter the gradation of each aggregate material. To improve the appearance of the 45th power chart,
begin with 100 on the 50 mm sieve and provide a value for every sieve. Interpolate a value if actual data
is not available.
The Aggregate Materials Worksheet imports the Gsb and Gsa values computed on the third worksheet
called Gsb Sheet. If these values are already known, directly enter the appropriate Gsb and Gsa into the
respective fields. Values entered must represent the appropriate value for the entire stockpile of
material.

Enter the individual aggregate characteristics into the fields provided. Individual stockpile data is
required in order to mathematically calculate blended values on later sheets. Two additional lines called
Other, are provided for local specifications or requirements that may exist. Directly enter any
recommended specifications in the yellow areas provided.
The entire recommended specifications section is only for comparison purposes and will be transferred
to the trial blend sheets later in the program.

Worksheet 3 - Gsb Sheet

Gsb Sheet Screen Shot

The Gsb Sheet is provided for calculating the combined Gsb, Gsa and water absorption for up to 10
stockpiles. Direct data entry of test weights are provided for duplicate specimens on both the coarse and
fine fractions of each pile.
The combined Gsb and Gsa will be automatically calculated for each stockpile based on the % passing
the 4.75 mm sieve entered for each stockpile on the Aggregate Materials Data worksheet and place the
result in the appropriate location on that sheet.
If only single samples are performed, repeat the test weights for specimen 2. If only the coarse or fine
fractions are tested, manually determine the appropriate values for each stockpile and directly enter them
on the Aggregate Materials Data sheet as previously described.

Worksheets 4 thru 8 Trial Blend 1 thru Trial Blend 5

Trial Blend 1 Worksheet 4a

Trial Blend 1 Worksheet 4b

Worksheets 4 thru 8 are very similar and contain two distinct areas.
The (a) portion of each worksheet is the area to determine the design aggregate structure that will be
used in the trial blend.
The (b) portion of each worksheet is located adjacent and to the right of the (a) section. This area of the
worksheet calculates the asphalt and aggregate batching information that pertains to the gradation
combination determined in the (a) section.

Worksheet 4a Determining design aggregate structure.

Worksheet 4a Screenshot
As previously discussed, the yellow areas are the only areas available for data entry. All of the
aggregate characteristics, costs and specifications are transported into worksheets 4 thru 8 from the
cover sheet and aggregate data sheet. The user must enter the appropriate stockpile percentages into the
yellow cells in decimal form. The blended gradation and consensus properties are automatically
calculated for any aggregate combination. The worksheet will compare the calculated result to the
specification shown. Properties that fail to meet the specification will show up in red. The final blend is
also plotted on the 45th power chart as shown below. It is very helpful to split the screen horizontally as
shown below by the red arrow. The plotted curve can then be observed as the aggregate percentages are
adjusted.

As additional aggregate combinations are determined for trial blends 2 5, the accompanying 45th
power chart continues to plot the previous trial blend curves. The screen shot below is for Trial Blend 5.

Worksheet 4b Aggregate and Asphalt Batching

Each trial blend worksheet contains the above batching section for laboratory preparation of samples.
The user must enter the aggregate batch weight and asphalt percentage to obtain the batching weights.
The section at the bottom of this sheet is a helpful tool that will assist you in adjusting batch weights for
over or under sized specimens.

Worksheet 9 - Printout
Worksheet 9 Lab Sheet Ndes consists of 4 main sections.

Section 1 is an alternative method used to calculate the initial asphalt content for conducting trial
blends. The most common method for determining the asphalt content is to simply pick any value that is
reasonably close to the expected outcome. If the user is not comfortable with simply picking an initial
asphalt percentage, the program will automatically calculate a value based on several assumptions.
These values are shown below. If the designer simply selects a binder content, insert the selected binder
contents in the yellow cells under the Pb,initial column. The values under Pb,initial will be automatically
transferred to Section 2 of this worksheet.

Worksheet 10 Lab Record Sheet

Worksheet 10
Worksheet 10 is simply a form that can be printed and given to the laboratory technician for lab
recordation purposes.

Marshall Trial Blending Program

The Marshall Trial Blending Program is very similar to the Superpave Trial Blending Program. The
Superpave Design Aggregate Structure process was modified to fit the Marshall Mix Design process,
and will work with other volumetric mix design processes. The Marshall Trial Blending Program also
consists of 10 individual, linked worksheets that will enable a designer to prepare up to 5 different trial
blends. This process is extremely helpful when the producer is challenged with meeting volumetric
properties in the field.

Worksheet 1 - Cover Sheet

This sheet is the same as that found in the Superpave Trial Blending Program. See Page 5 for details.

Worksheet 2 - Aggregate Materials Data

This sheet is very similar to Worksheet 2 found in the Superpave Trial Blending Program with the
following exceptions. There are no hard rules regarding recommended aggregate specifications in the
Marshall Mix Design procedure. Specifications very between locations and are thus left blank. The
user is required to enter the applicable specifications for the project. It is strongly encouraged to provide
a gradation value and specification range for each sieve listed whether it is a project requirement or not.
This is only necessary to provide readable 45th power charts in the Trial Blend portions of the workbook.
Guidance regarding the remaining portions of this worksheet is identical to that found in the Superpave
section beginning on page 7 of this manual.

Worksheet 3 - Gsb Sheet

This sheet is the same as that found in the Superpave Trial Blending Program. See Page 8 for details.

Worksheets 4 thru 8 Trial Blend 1 thru Trial Blend 5

These sheets are essentially the same as those found in the Superpave Trial Blending Program, with the
following exceptions. The 45th power charts on the Marshall program plot the entire gradation band in a
red dashed format as shown below. The Superpave Trial Blending Program plots the applicable
Superpave control points. See Page 9 for operational details regarding these worksheets.

Superpave Mix Design Program

The Superpave Mix Design Program is a combination of seven Excel worksheets in one workbook.
This program conforms to Asphalt Institute Manual Series SP-2 and will perform volumetric
calculations, plot charts and all other necessary functions needed to conduct a standard Superpave Mix
Design.

Worksheet 1 Project Info.

The procedures related to this sheet are identical to the directions given under Worksheet 1 Cover
Sheet of the Superpave Trial Blending Program. See Page 5 of this manual.

Worksheet 2 Grading and Batching

The Superpave and Marshall Mix Design portions of the AIMD program are structured for a laboratory
that has been charged to verify a mix design. This assumes that aggregate samples are received and
the aggregate characteristics other than gradation are evaluated on the total blend selected for mix design
analysis. This framework results in 3 segments of Worksheet 2 (a), (b) and (c).

Worksheet 2(a) Grading and Batching

This portion of Worksheet 2 is where aggregate gradations and stockpile percentages are entered into the
program.
Aggregate blends that do not meet the control point criteria will appear in red.

This sheet also contains aggregate and mixture cost calculators. If aggregate and binder costs have been
entered on the Project Information sheet, enter an estimated binder content in the field provided and an
estimated cost of mix will be calculated. This feature may be helpful when changing stockpile
percentages.

Worksheet 2(b) & (c) Grading and Batching

4
1
5
2
3
Worksheet 2(b)

6
7
Worksheet 2(c)

Worksheets 2(b) & 2(c) are aggregate batching sheets located directly adjacent and to the right of
Worksheet 2(a). The Superpave and Marshall Mix Design Programs assume that all aggregate
characteristics will be evaluated or verified on the blended aggregate combination.
Item 1 - Calculates the batch weights needed to prepare laboratory compacted specimens. Enter the
aggregate weight desired and the individual weights from each stockpile sieve are calculated. Enter the
desired trial asphalt percentages and the asphalt batch weights are calculated for the previously entered
aggregate batch weight.
Item 2 Calculates the aggregate batch weights needed to prepare a representative blended sample of
coarse aggregate, retained on the #4, for coarse aggregate Gsb testing.
Item 3 Calculates the aggregate batch weights needed to prepare a representative blended sample of
fine aggregate, passing the #4, for fine aggregate Gsb testing.
Items 4, 5, 6 and 7 of Worksheet 2(c) calculate the batch weights needed to prepare a representative,
blended sample of coarse or fine aggregate for CAA, FAA, F&E and S.E. testing. Simply enter the
desired sample size and the appropriate weights of the respective sieve fractions will be calculated.

Worksheet 3 Lab Data

Superpave Mix Design Worksheet 3 Lab Data, includes calculation areas for all aggregate and initial
mixture testing data. Laboratory test weights can be directly entered on this sheet for Coarse Gsb, Fine
Gsb, CAA, FAA, F&E and S.E. Testing. Simply enter the respective test data into the appropriate cells
and the results for the combined blend will be calculated. Gmb weights along with Nini and Ndes
heights are entered in the lower portion of this worksheet to calculate the volumetric properties of the
mixture. It is important to note that this sheet is set up for Gmm testing that is performed at one trial
asphalt content to calculate the effective aggregate specific gravity (Gse). Gse is then utilized to back
calculate the Gmm at the remaining trail asphalt percentages. The volumetric properties calculated on
this sheet are then transferred and plotted on the next worksheet Vol. Analysis. This worksheet is
structured to conduct volumetric calculations based on the laboratory compacted specimens being
compacted to Ndes.

Worksheet 4 Vol. Analysis

Worksheet 4 Vol. Analysis, plots Va, VMA, VFA, DP, %Gmm@Nini and %Gmm@Ndes along with
the applicable Superpave recommended criteria. The worksheet features a Percent Binder (Pb)
calculator. The worksheet uses the default air void content of 4.0% to calculate the corresponding Pb.
If a different design air void level is desired, simply enter the desired air void level in the Design Air
Voids cell and the new Pb will be calculated. Should the user wish to change any of the other
recommended criteria, unprotect the worksheet and directly enter the desired values in the cells provided
along the right side of the sheet. These new values should then be automatically reflected on the
appropriate chart.

Worksheet 5 Nmax Verif.

After determination of the design asphalt content, Superpave procedures require that the mixture must
not exceed a maximum %Gmm@Nmax of 98%. Additional specimens must be tested for Nmax
compliance at the newly determined design asphalt content. This worksheet provides for this data to be
entered, calculated and plotted. The Gmm of the mix must be determined on either a new sample tested
at the design asphalt content or back calculated from the previously determined Gse. This worksheet
will automatically back calculate Gmm from the binder content determined on the previous worksheet
(Vol. Analysis). This worksheet also provides an area to enter newly performed Gmm testing. The
eventual value used must be entered into the worksheet in the space provided. This worksheet will also
plot two sets of gyratory curves. The average %Gmm values at Nini, Ndes and Nmax are automatically
plotted. If the user elects to enter the individual specimen heights at the different levels of N, a more
precise plot of each specimen will be obtained.

Worksheet 6 T-283

The sixth worksheet in the Superpave Mix Design Program computes AASHTO T-283 results.
Simply enter the appropriate values into their respective cells and the program will perform all necessary
calculations.

Worksheet 7 Lab Recording Sheet

Worksheet 7, the last worksheet in the Superpave Mix Design Program, is simply a form that can be
printed and given to the laboratory technician for lab recordation purposes.

Marshall Mix Design Program

The Marshall Mix Design Program consists of six linked Excel worksheets in one workbook. This
program conforms to Asphalt Institute Manual Series MS-2 and will perform the volumetric
calculations, plot charts and all other necessary functions needed to conduct a standard Marshall Mix
Design.

Worksheet 1 Project Info.

The procedures related to this sheet are identical to the directions given under Worksheet 1 Cover
Sheet of the Superpave Trial Blending Program. See Page 5 of this manual.

Worksheet 2 Grad. and Batching

Worksheet 2 is virtually the same as worksheet 2 of the Superpave Mix Design Program (Page 20 of this
manual) with the following exceptions:

Worksheet 2(a) Grad. and Batching

Design ESALs and depth to the surface of the lift and not needed as there are no related criteria in the
Marshall Mix Design process. In addition, inserting gradation and specification data for all sieves listed
will improve the appearance of the 45th power chart. The Marshall 45th power chart also plots the
applicable Superpave gradation control points for reference only.

Worksheet 3 Lab Data

Marshall Mix Design Worksheet 3 Lab Data, includes calculation areas for all aggregate and mixture
testing data. Laboratory test weights can be directly entered on this sheet for Coarse Gsb, Fine Gsb
along with CAA, FAA, F&E and S.E. consensus property tests. Simply enter the respective test data
into the appropriate cells and the results for the combined blend will be calculated. Gmb weights along
with Stability and Flow data are entered in the lower portion of this worksheet to calculate the
volumetric properties of the mixture. It is important to note that this sheet is set up for Gmm testing that
is performed at one trial asphalt content to calculate the effective aggregate specific gravity (Gse). Gse
is then utilized to back calculate the Gmm at the remaining trail asphalt percentages. The volumetric
properties calculated on this sheet are then transferred and plotted on the next worksheet Vol.
Analysis. This worksheet is structured to automatically calculate corrected stability values based on the
calculated specimen volumes.

Worksheet 4 Vol. Analysis

Worksheet 4 Vol. Analysis, plots Va, VMA, VFA, DP, Stability and Flow along with the applicable
Marshall recommended criteria. The worksheet features a Percent Binder (Pb) calculator. The
worksheet uses the default air void content of 4.0% to calculate the corresponding Pb. If a different
design air void level is desired, simply enter the desired air void level in the Design Air Void cell and
the new Pb will be calculated. Should the user wish to change any of the other recommended criteria,
unprotect the worksheet and directly enter the desired values in the cells provided along the bottom of
the sheet. These new values should then be automatically reflected on the appropriate chart.

Worksheet 5 T-283
and
Worksheet 6 Lab Recordation Sheet
This worksheets are virtually the same as sheets 6 and 7 of the Superpave Mix Design Program. See
pages 26 27 of this manual for further instructions.
