LETTER OF BARNABAS

CHAPTER 1
Greetings, sons and daughters, in the name of our Lord Jesus the Anointed-One,
1
who loves us in peace.
2 Since the ordinances of God are great and rich towards you, I rejoice exceedingly and above measure at
your blessed and glorious spirits, because
2
the grace of the spiritual gift which you have received is so deeply
engrafted. 3 Therefore, I also inwardly rejoice all the more in the hope of salvation, because I truly perceive in
you the Spirit poured out from the rich Lord of love.
3
Your greatly desired appearance has filled me with
astonishment over you.
4
4 Therefore, I am persuaded of this, and fully convinced in my own mind, that while
speaking much among you, I have understood many things, because the Lord has accompanied me on the road
of righteousness. 5 Also on this account, I am bound by the strictest obligation to love you above my own soul,
because great are the faith and love dwelling in you, due to the hope of the life which is his.
6 Therefore, considering this, that if I should take the trouble to share with you some portion of what I
myself have received, it will prove to be a sufficient reward for having ministered to such spirits. I have
hastened briefly to write to you, in order that, along with your faith, you might have perfect knowledge.
7 The doctrines of the Lord are three: the hope of life, which is the beginning and end of our faith; righteous
life, which is the beginning and end of judgment; love from joy and gladness, which is the testimony
5
of the
words of a righteous life.
6
8 For by the prophets, the Lord has made known to us both the things which are past
and present, as well as giving us the first-fruits of the knowledge
7
of things to come; and, as we see these things
coming to pass one by one, we must, more generously and higher, approach his fear.
8
9 Therefore, I, not as a
teacher, but as one of yourselves, will set forth a few things which will render you more joyful in the present
circumstances.

CHAPTER 2
Therefore, since the times are evil, and the Worker of Evil himself possesses power,
9
we must give heed to
ourselves, and diligently search out the commandments of the Lord. 2 The helpers of our faith are fear and
patience; our allies are long-suffering and self-control. 3 While these remain pure in matters relating to the
Lord, wisdom, prudence, understanding, and knowledge rejoice along with them.
4 For he has made known to us through all the prophets that he needs neither sacrifices, nor holocausts, nor
oblations, saying the following:

5 What is the abundance of your sacrifices to me, says the Lord?
I am full of holocausts, and neither desire the fat of lambs,
nor the blood of bulls and goats;
nor when you come to appear before me!
For who has required these things from your hands?
Do not tread my courts any longer.
If you bring flour, it is in vain.
Incense is an abomination to me.
And your new moons and sabbaths I cannot endure.

6 Therefore, he has abolished these things, so that the new law of our Lord Jesus the Anointed-One, which
is without the yoke of necessity, might not
10
have a man-made oblation.

7 And again he says to them:
Did I command your fathers, when they went out from the land of Egypt, to offer me holocausts and
sacrifices? 8 But rather I commanded this to them, Do not let any one of you cherish any evil in his heart
against his neighbor, and do not love an oath of falsehood.

9 Therefore, if we are not senseless, we ought to understand the gracious intention of our Father; for he
speaks to us, desiring that we, not
11
going astray like them, should ask how we may approach him.

10 Accordingly to us he declares:
A sacrifice to God is a contrite heart;
an odor of sweet savor to the Lord is a heart that glorifies its Maker.

11 Therefore, brethren, we ought to watch carefully after our salvation, lest the Evil One, having made his
entrance by deceit, should sling us out from our life.

He then says to them again concerning these things:

Why do you fast to me as on this day, says the Lord,
that your voice should be heard with a cry?
This is not the fast which I have chosen, says the Lord,
Nor a day for a man to humble his soul.
1

2 And even if you bend your neck like a ring,
and put sackcloth and ashes upon yourself,
2

will you call it an acceptable fast.

3 To us he says:

Behold, this is the fast that I have chosen, says the Lord,
not that a man should humble his soul,
3

but that he should loose every band of iniquity,
release the chains of harsh agreements,
restore to liberty those who are bruised,
tear in pieces every unjust contract,
distribute your bread to the hungry,
clothe the naked when you see him,
bring the homeless poor into your house,
do not despise the humble if you see him,
nor anyone of your own house or of your family.
4

4 Then your light will break forth at dawn,
and your healing
5
will quickly spring up,
and righteousness will go forth before you,
and the glory of God will encompass you;
5 and then you will call, and God will hear you;
while you are yet speaking, he will say, Behold, here I am;
if you put away from yourself the yoke,
and the stretching out of the hands, and words of discontent,
and cheerfully give your bread to the hungry,
and show compassion to
6
the soul that is humbled.

6 Therefore, brethren, for this reason, he is long-suffering, foreseeing how the people whom he has prepared
in his Beloved would believe with simplicity. For he revealed all these things to us beforehand, so that we
should not be shipwrecked, like the uninitiated, by their law.
7

CHAPTER 4
Therefore, it is necessary for us to look earnestly into the events at hand, to search diligently into those things
which are able to save us. 2 Let us then utterly flee from all the works of lawlessness, lest these should take hold
of us; and let us hate the error of the present time, that we may set our love on the world to come: 3 let us not
give loose reins to our soul, that it should be enabled to run with sinners and the wicked, lest we become like
them.

4 The final stumbling-block approaches, concerning which it is written, as Enoch
8
says:
For to this purpose the Lord has cut short the seasons and the days,
that his Beloved should hasten and come to his inheritance.

5 And the prophet also speaks the following:
Ten kingdoms
9
will reign upon the earth,
and after them a little king shall rise up,
who will subdue three of the kings
10
under one.

6 In like manner Daniel speaks of the same:
And I saw the fourth beast, wicked and powerful,
and more savage than all the beasts of the earth,
11

and how ten horns sprang up from it,
and out of them a little budding horn,
and how it subdued three of the great horns under one.

7 Therefore, you ought to understand. Furthermore, I also beg this of you, as being one of you, and loving
you both individually and collectively more than my own soul: now
1
take heed to yourselves, and do not be like
like some, who pile up sin upon sin, and say, The covenant is both theirs and ours.
8 Yes, it is ours;
2
but they finally lost it in this way, when Moses had already received it. For the scripture
says, And Moses was fasting on the mountain forty days and forty nights, and received the covenant from the
Lord, tablets of stone written with the finger of the hand of the Lord. 9 But turning away to idols, they lost it.
For the Lord speaks this, Moses, Moses go down quickly; for the people whom you have brought out of the
land of Egypt have transgressed. 10 And Moses understood, and threw the two tablets out of his hands; and
their covenant was broken, in order that the covenant of the beloved Jesus might be sealed in our heart by the
hope which springs from faith in him.
11 Now, wishing to write much to you, not as a teacher, but as is befitting of one who loves you, I have
made haste to write you without omitting anything from what I myself possess, with a view to your
purification.
3
12 We take earnest
4
heed in these last days; for the whole period of our life and faith
5
will profit
us nothing, unless now in this lawless time we also withstand the coming sources of temptations, as is befitting
of the sons of God. In this way, the Black One
6
may find no means of entrance.
13 Let us flee from every vanity. Let us utterly hate the works of the way of wickedness. Do not, by drawing
apart, live a solitary life, as if you were already justified; but come together in one place and seek the common
welfare. 14 For the scripture says:

Woe to them who are wise to themselves,
and prudent in their own sight!

15 Let us be spiritually-minded: let us be a perfect temple to God. As far as it is in our power, let us
meditate upon the fear of God, and let us keep his commandments, that we may rejoice in his ordinances.
16 The Lord will judge the world without respect of persons. Each will receive according to his deeds. If he
is righteous, his righteousness will precede him; if he is wicked, the reward of unrighteousness is before him. 14
Since we are called, take heed; lest resting at our ease, we should fall asleep in our sins, and the Prince of Evil,
acquiring power over us, should cast us out from the kingdom of the Lord. 15 And remember this all the more,
my brethren, when you reflect and see how, after so many great signs and wonders were wrought in Israel, even
they were abandoned. Let us beware lest we be found, as it is written, Many are called, but few are chosen.

CHAPTER 5
For this reason the Lord endured to deliver up his flesh to corruption, that we might be sanctified through the
remission of sins, that is, by the sprinkling of his blood. 2 For the scripture concerning him refers partly to
Israel, partly to us, and it says:

He was wounded for our transgressions,
and bruised for our iniquities:
by his stripes we are healed.
He was led as a sheep to the slaughter,
and as a lamb that is silent before its shearer.

3 Therefore we ought to be deeply grateful to the Lord, because he has made known to us both things that
are past, and has made us wise in the present, and has not left us without understanding in the things which are
to come.
4 Now, the scripture says, Nets are not unjustly spread out for birds. This means that the man who has
knowledge of the way of righteousness, perishes deservedly if he rushes off into the way of darkness. 5 And
further, my brethren: if the Lord endured to suffer for our soul, although he is Lord of the whole world, to
whom God said at the foundation of the world, Let us make man after our image, and after our likeness, how
then did he allow himself to suffer at the hand of men?
6 The prophets, having obtained grace from him, prophesied about him. And since it was necessary for him
to appear in the flesh, that he might abolish death and manifest the resurrection from the dead, 7 he endured in
order that he might fulfill the promise made to the fathers, and prepare for himself the new people; also to show,
while still on earth, that, he, when he has raised men, will also be the judge.
8 Moreover, teaching Israel, and doing many miracles and signs, he preached to them, and greatly loved
them.
7
9 But when he chose to have his good-message preached by his own apostlesmen lawless beyond all
othershe showed that he came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
8
Then he manifested
himself to be the Son of God. 10 For if he had not come in the flesh, there is no way in which men could be
saved by beholding him,
9
since even when they look upon the sun, which will perish and is a work of his hands,
hands, their eyes are not able to bear its rays.

4
11 Therefore, for this purpose, the Son of God came in the flesh, that he might sum up the complete total of
their sins against those who had persecuted his
1
prophets to the death. 12 Therefore, for this purpose he allowed
allowed himself to suffer. For God says that they are the stroke of his flesh; when they smite the Shepherd, then
the sheep of the flock will be scattered and fail.
2
13 It was his will to suffer in this manner, for it was necessary
that he should suffer on the tree.

For the prophet says about him:
Spare my soul from the sword,
and
3
fasten my flesh with nails;
for the assemblies
4
of the wicked have risen up against me.
5

14 And again he says:
Behold, I have given my back to scourges,
and my cheeks to strokes,
and I have set my face as a firm rock.

CHAPTER 6
Therefore, when he gave the commandment, what does he say?
Who is he that will contend with me? Let him oppose me.
Or, who is he that will enter into judgment with me?
Let him draw near to the servant of the Lord.
Woe to you, for you will all wax old like a garment,
and the moth will consume you.

2 And again, on being assigned
6
as a mighty stone for crushing, the prophet says:
Behold, for the foundations of Zion,
I will set down a precious stone, specifically chosen, a cornerstone.

3 Next, what does he say?
And he who trusts
7
in it will live forever.

4 Is our hope, then, set upon a stone? Far from it. But it is because he laid his flesh with power; for he says:
And he set me as a hard rock.

5 And again the prophet says:
The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the head of the corner.

6 And again he says:
This is the great and wonderful day which the Lord has made.

7 I write more simply to you, that you may understand. I am the token of your love. Therefore, what again
does the prophet say?
The assembly of the wicked have surrounded me;
they surround me as bees do a honeycomb.

And:
For my garment they cast lots.

8 Therefore, since he was to be manifested and to suffer in the flesh, his suffering was revealed in advance.
For the prophet speaks concerning Israel:
Woe to their soul, because they have consulted an evil counsel against themselves, saying, Let us bind the
righteous one, because he is unprofitable to us.

9 And Moses also says to them:
8
Behold, says the Lord God, enter into the good land which the Lord swore
swore to Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and inherit it, a land flowing with milk and honey.

10 But what does knowledge say? Learn: Trust in the one who will be manifested to you in the fleshin
Jesus. For man is earth in a suffering state, for the formation of Adam was from the face of the earth. 11 What,
then, does, into the good land, a land flowing with milk and honey mean? Blessed be our Lord, brethren, who
has placed in us wisdom and understanding of secret things.
12 For the prophet says: Who can understand the parable of the Lord, except him who is wise and prudent,
and who loves his Lord?

5

13 Therefore, since he has renewed us by the remission of our sins, he has made us to be a new pattern, that
we should possess the soul of children, as though he were creating us anew by his Spirit.
1

14 For the scripture says about us, while he speaks to the Son: Let us make man after our image, and after
our likeness; and let them have dominion over the beasts of the earth, and the birds of heaven, and the fishes of
the sea. 15 And, on seeing the beauty of our creation,
2
the Lord said, Increase and multiply, and fill the earth.
earth. These things were spoken to the Son.
3

16 Again, I will show you how he refers to us: the Lord says,
4
he has accomplished a second creation in
these last days. The Lord says:
Behold, I will
5
make the last like the first.

17 Therefore, in reference to this, the prophet proclaimed:
Enter into the land flowing with milk and honey, and have dominion over it.

18 Therefore, behold that we have been created anew, as he says again in another prophet:
Behold, says the Lord, I will take out from them
that is, from those whom the Spirit of the Lord foresaw
their hearts of stone and I will put hearts of flesh within them,
because he himself
6
was to be manifested in flesh and dwell among us. 19 For, my brethren, the habitation
of our heart is a temple holy to the Lord.

For again the Lord says:
For in what shall I appear before the Lord my God, and be glorified?
He says,
7
I will confess to you in the assembly in the midst
8
of my brethren;
and I will praise you in the midst of the assembly of the holy ones.

20 Therefore, we are those whom he has led into the good land. What, then, does the milk and honey mean?
This: that as the infant is kept alive first by honey, and afterwards by milk, so we, also, being kept alive by the
faith of the promise and by the word, will live ruling over the earth. 21 As he
9
said above, Let them increase
and multiply and rule over the fishes.
22 Who then is able to rule over the beasts, or the fishes, or the birds of heaven? For we ought to perceive
that to rule is a sign of authority, so that one who gives orders truly rules. 23 Therefore, even if this is not
happening at present, it will still come as he has promised it to us. When? When we ourselves have also been
made perfect so as to become heirs of the covenant of the Lord.

CHAPTER 7
Therefore, children of gladness,
10
I understand that the good Lord has made all things known to us in advance,
that we might know of whom we ought to render thanksgiving and praise for all things. 2 Therefore, if the Son
of God, who is Lord of all things, and who will judge the living and the dead, suffered, so that his wound might
give us life, let us believe that the Son of God could not have suffered except for our sakes. 3 Moreover, when
fixed to the cross, he was also given vinegar and gall to drink.
4 Listen how the priests of the people
11
gave previous indications of this. A commandment was written:
Whosoever does not keep the fast should be put to death.
And the Lord commanded this because he himself was going to offer the vessel of his spirit as a sacrifice for
our sins, in order that the type signified by Isaac, when he was offered upon the altar, might be fully
accomplished. 5 What, then, does he say in the prophet?
And let them eat of the goat which is offered, with fasting, for all their sins.
Attend carefully:
And let all the priests alone eat the entrails unwashed with vinegar.
6 Why? Because you are to give to me gall and vinegar to drink when I offer my flesh for the sins of my
new people. But you will eat alone, while the people fast and mourn in sackcloth and ashes to show that it was
necessary for him to suffer many things for them.
12

7 How then did the commandment run?
13
Give your attention:
Take two goats, beautiful and similar to each other, and offer them. And let the priest take one as a
holocaust for sins.
But what should they do with the other?
Accursed is the other, he says.
8 Notice how the type of Jesus
14
is manifested.

6
And all of you spit upon it, and kick it, and encircle its head with scarlet wool, and then let it be
driven into the wilderness.
9 And when all this has been done, he who bears the goat, leads it into the desert, and takes the wool off
from it, and places it upon a shrub which is called Rachia,
1
of whose shoots
2
are usually eaten when we find
them in the field. The fruits of this
3
kind of shrub alone are sweet.
10 Again, what does this mean? Give good attention:
One upon the altar, and the other accursed.
And why is the one that is accursed crowned? Because in that day, they will see him having a scarlet robe
about his body down to his feet; and they shall say, Is this not him whom we once despised, and pierced, and
spit upon, and crucified? Truly this was him who then declared himself to be the Son of God.
11 But how is he like this goat?
4
In this way, the goats shall be beautiful and similar, that when they see
him coming, they may be amazed by the likeness of the goat. Then, behold the goat,
5
the type of Jesus who was
was to suffer. 12 But why did they place the wool in the middle of the thorns? It is a type of Jesus displayed
before the assembly,
6
for whoever wishes to take it away might find it necessary to suffer much, because the
thorns are formidable, and the only way that it can be taken hold of is through suffering. 13 He also says the
following, Those who wish to behold me and lay hold of my kingdom, must lay hold of me through tribulation
and suffering.

CHAPTER 8
But what kind of type do you suppose this is? A commandment was given to Israel, that men whose sins are
perfect should offer a heifer, and kill and burn it; and then that boys should take the ashes and put them into
vessels, and bind scarlet wool around a stick
7
(see again the type of the cross, both the scarlet wool and the
hyssop)
8
along with hyssop; and after this the boys should sprinkle the people one by one, in order that they
might be purified from their sins.
2 Consider how he speaks to you with simplicity. The calf
9
is the Anointed-One
10
Jesus. The sinful men
offering it are those who offered him for the slaughter. But now there are no longer men; there is no longer
glory for sinners.
11
3 And the boys who sprinkle are those who have proclaimed to us the remission of sins and
purification of heart.
12
To them he gave authority to preach the good-message. They are twelve in number, as a
witness to the tribes (for there are twelve tribes of Israel).
4 But why are there three boys who sprinkle? As a witness of Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, because they
are great in the sight of God. 5 And why was the wool on the tree? Because the Kingdom of Jesus is held by the
tree, so that those who believe in him will live forever. 6 But why was hyssop joined with the wool? Because in
his kingdom there will be evil and polluted days, in which we will be saved, because he who suffers in the body
is cured through the foulness of hyssop. 7 And for this reason, the things which were done in this way are clear
to us, but obscure to them, because they did not hear the voice of the Lord.

CHAPTER 9
Furthermore, he speaks about our ears, how he has circumcised the ears of
13
our heart. For the Lord says in the
prophet:
In the hearing of the ear they obeyed me.

2 And again he says:
Those who are far off will surely hear;
they will know what I have done.

3 And:
Be circumcised in your hearts,
14
says the Lord.

4 And again he says:
Hear, O Israel, for this is what the Lord your God says.

5 And again the Spirit of the Lord proclaims:
15

Who is he who wishes to live forever?
Let him carefully hear the voice of my servant.
16

6 And again he says:
Hear, O heaven, and give ear, O earth, for God
17
has spoken these things for a testimony.

1

9 Therefore he has circumcised our ears, that we might hear his word and not only
2
believe, for the
circumcision in which they trusted has been abolished. For he declared that circumcision was not of the flesh,
but they were mistaken because an evil messenger deluded
3
them. 10 He says to them:
This is what the Lord your God says.
(here I find a new
4
commandment)
Do not sow among thorns,
but
5
circumcise yourselves to the Lord.

11 And why does he speak?
Circumcise the hardness of your heart, and do not stiffen your neck?
6

And again he says:
7

Behold, says the Lord, all the nations are uncircumcised in the flesh,
8

but this people is uncircumcised in their heart.

12 But you will say, In truth the people have been circumcised as a seal. Yes, indeed, but so is every
Syrian and Arabian and all the priests of idols. Are they also within the bond of their
9
covenant? Yes, even the
Egyptians practice circumcision.
13 Learn then, children of love,
10
about all things, that Abraham, who first instituted circumcision,
practicing that rite, richly
11
looked forward in spirit to Jesus, for he received the doctrines of the three letters.
For it says:
And Abraham circumcised eighteen men and three hundred.
14 What, then, was this knowledge that was taught to him? Learn the eighteen first, and, then after a

13

You have Jesus. And because
14
the cross was to express the grace by the letter T, he also says, and three
hundred. Therefore, he signifies Jesus by two letters and the cross by one. 15 He, who has placed the innate
gift of his teaching
15
within our hearts, knows this. No one has heard from me a more excellent teaching, but I
know that you are worthy.

CHAPTER 10
Now why did Moses say:
You shall not eat the swine, nor the eagle, nor the hawk, nor the crow, nor any scaleless
16
fish?
He included three doctrines in his meaning. 2 Moreover, he says to them in Deuteronomy:
And I will establish my commandments as a covenant on this people.
Therefore, is there not a command of God to abstain from eating these? There is, but Moses spoke
spiritually. 3 He mentioned the swine for the following reason, as meaning to say that you shall not associate
with men who resemble swine. For when they prosper, they forget their Lord; but when they are in need, they
acknowledge the Lord. Just as the swine, when it has eaten, ignores its master; but when it is hungry it cries out,
and after receiving food is silent again.

4 He says: Nor shall you eat the eagle, nor the hawk, nor the kite, nor the crow.
He means that you shall not associate with or be like men who do not know how to provide their own food
by labor and sweat, but in their lawlessness, seize that which belongs to others; and they give the impression of
walking in innocence, but gaze about to see whom they may strip bare on account of their greediness, just as
these birds do not provide food for themselves by their own efforts.
17
These birds sit idle and seek how to
18

devour the flesh of others, proving themselves pests by their wickedness.

5 He says: And you shall not eat the lamprey, or the polypus, or the cuttlefish.

2

condemned to death, just as these fish who alone are accursed and swim in the deep, and do not rise like the
rest, but make their abode in the mud below in the depths.

6 Moreover, he says: You shall not eat the hare.
Why? You shall not be a corrupter of boys, nor shall any of you be like such people. Because the hare
multiplies its discharge year by year; for as many years as it lives, thus it has as many holes.

7 Moreover: You shall not eat the hyena.
He means that you shall not be an adulterer, nor a fornicator, nor be like such people. Why? Because that
animal changes its sex every year; and is at one time male, and at another female.

8 Moreover, he rightly detests the weasel. For he means that you shall not be like those whom we hear of as
committing iniquity with their mouth, on account of their uncleanness;
3
nor shall you associate with those
impure women who commit iniquity with their mouth.
4
For this animal conceives by the mouth.

9 Moses, having received
5
three doctrines concerning meats, issued them in a spiritual sense; but they
received them according to their carnal desire, as if he had merely spoken of meats. 10 David, however,
comprehends the knowledge of these three doctrines, and says:
Blessed is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly,
as the fishes go in darkness into the depths,
and has not stood in the way of sinners,
as those who profess to fear the Lord, but sin like swine,
and has not sat in the seat of the insolent,
as those birds who lie in wait for prey.

Now take a full and firm grasp of this perfect
6
knowledge.
11 Moses says again: You shall eat every animal that is cloven-hoofed and ruminates.
What does he mean? That whoever receives food recognizes him who nourishes, and relying upon him,
seems to rejoice. He spoke well in regard to the commandment.
12 What, then, does he mean? That we ought to associate with those who fear the Lord, with those who
meditate in their heart upon the word which they have received, with those who both speak the judgments of the
Lord and observe them, with those who know that meditation is a work of joy, and one who ruminates
7
upon the
the word of the Lord. But what does the cloven-hoofed mean? That the righteous man walks in this world, yet
also looks forward to the holy age.
13 Behold how well Moses legislated. But how was it possible for them to understand or comprehend these
things? Rightly understanding his commandments rightly,
8
we then announce them as the Lord intended. For
this reason, he circumcised our ears and our hearts, that we should understand these things.

CHAPTER 11
Let us further inquire whether the Lord took any care to give a revelation beforehand about the water and the
cross. Indeed, concerning the water it is written in reference to Israel, that they would not receive the immersion
which brings the remission of sins, but will build another for themselves.
2 Therefore, the prophet declares:
Be astonished, O heaven, and let the earth tremble still more
9
at this,
because this people has committed two great evils:
they have forsaken me, the fountain of life,
10

and have dug a pit of death
11
for themselves which cannot hold water.
12

Is my holy mountain Sinai a desert rock?
For you will be as the fledglings of a bird,
fluttering about when they are ejected from the nest.
13

3 And again the prophet says:
I will go before you and level the mountains,
and I will break the gates of bronze,
and shatter the bars of iron;
and I will give you treasuresdark
14
, secret, invisible
that they may know that I am the Lord God.

5 Furthermore, what does he say in reference to the Son?
2

His water is sure;
you will see the King with glory,
and your soul will meditate on the fear of the Lord.

6 And again he says in another prophet:
And the man who does these things will be like a tree planted near the running waters,
which will bring forth its fruit in due season.
And his leaf will not fall off,
and all that he does will prosper.
7 Not so are the wicked, not so;
but are like dust, which the wind sweeps away from the face of the earth.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in judgment,
nor sinners in the counsel of the righteous.
For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

8A Notice how he has described both the water and the cross at the same time. For these words imply:
Blessed are those who have placed their hope in the cross and have descended into the water. For he speaks of
their reward in due season. 8B At that time he declares, I will repay. But now he says,
3
Their leaves will
not fall off. This means that every word which proceeds out of your mouth in faith and love will profit many
for conversion and hope and resurrection.
4

9 Again, another prophet says:
And the land of Jacob was praised above every land.
This means
5
that he glorifies
6
the vessel of his Spirit.

10 Further, what does he say?
And there was a river flowing on the right and beautiful trees arose from it;
and whoever eats of them will live forever.

11 This means that we indeed descend into the water full of sins and defilement, but come up bearing fruit
in our hearts, having fear and hope in Jesus in the Spirit. 12 And whosoever eats of them will live forever.
This means: Whoever hears these things spoken and believes, will live forever.

CHAPTER 12
In like manner, he points to the cross of the Anointed-One in another prophet, who says:
And when will these things come to pass?
And the Lord said,
7
When a tree falls down and rises again, and when blood drips from a tree.
Here again you have a reference to the cross, and to him who was to be crucified.

2 Yet again he speaks of this in Moses,
8
when Israel was attacked by strangers, in order to remind those who
who were attacked, that it was on account of their sins that they were delivered to death. 3 The Spirit speaks to
the heart of Moses to make a type of the cross, and
9
of him who would suffer upon it; for unless they put their
hope in him, they will be overcome forever. 4 Therefore, Moses placed one weapon above another in the midst
of the struggle,
10
and standing high above them all, he stretched forth his hands, and so Israel again acquired the
mastery. 5 But whenever he let down his hands again, they began to be destroyed again. For what reason? That
they might know that they cannot be saved unless they put their hope in him.

6 And in another prophet, he declares:
All day long I have stretched forth my hands to an unbelieving people,
and one who walk after their own thought in a way that is not good.

7 And again Moses makes a type of Jesus, that it was necessary for him to suffer, that he himself will give
life,
11
although they will believe that he has been destroyed by the sign given when Israel was falling. 8 For
since transgression was committed by Eve through means of the serpent, he brought it to pass that every serpent
bit them, and they died. This was done so that he might convince them, that on account of their transgression,
they were given over to the affliction of death.

so that he might reveal a type of Jesus. Therefore, Moses makes a carved serpent, and places it upon a
beam,
2
and called together the people by a proclamation. 10 Therefore, when they came together, they begged
for Moses to offer supplication
3
on their behalf and pray for their recovery.
11 And Moses spoke to them, saying, Whenever any one of you is bitten, let him come to the serpent
placed on the tree; and let him hope and believe, that even though dead, it is able to give him life, and
immediately he will be saved. And they did so. In this, you also have the glory of Jesus; for in him and for him
are all things.

12 Again, what does Moses say to Joshua
4
the son of Nun, when, as a prophet, he gave
5
him this name, that
that all of the people might listen to him alone? It was because the Father revealed all things about his Son
Jesus. Moses says to Joshua
6
the son of Nun, after giving him this name, when he sent him to spy out the land
and said, Take a book into your hands, and write what the Lord declares, how Jesus
7
the Son of God will cut
off the entire house of Amalek from the roots in the last days. 13 See again: Jesus, who was manifested, by a
type in the flesh, is not the son of man,
8
but the Son of God.

14 Therefore, since they were to say that the Anointed-One was the son of David, David himself, fearing
and understanding the error of the wicked, says:
The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.

15 And again, it is said by Isaiah:
The Lord said to my Anointed-One, the Lord,
9
whose right hand I hold,
10

that the nations should yield obedience before him;
and I will break in pieces the strength of kings.

16 See how David calls him Lord and does not say Son of God.
11

CHAPTER 13
But let us see whether this people or the former people is the heir, and whether the covenant belongs to us or to
them. 2 Now hear what the scripture says about the people:
And Isaac prayed for his wife Rebecca, because she was barren; and she conceived.
12

Furthermore, Rebecca also went forth to consult the Lord, and the Lord said to her:
Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples in your belly;
and one people will overcome the other, and the elder will serve the younger.
3 You ought to understand who Isaac is, who Rebecca is, and in regard to whom he has shown that this
people is greater than the former.

4 And in another prophecy Jacob speaks more clearly to his son Joseph, saying:
Behold, the Lord did not deprive me of your presence;
bring your sons to me, that I may bless them.

5 And he brought Manasseh and Ephraim, desiring that Manasseh
13
should be blessed, because he was the
elder. With this view Joseph led him to the right hand of his father Jacob. But Jacob saw in spirit the type of
people to come.

6 And what does he say?
And Jacob crossed his hands, and placed his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, the
second and younger, and blessed him. And Joseph said to Jacob, Transfer your right hand to
the head of Manasseh, for he is my firstborn son.
And Jacob said, I know, my son, I know; but the elder will serve the younger, and this
one will be blessed.
7 You see on whom he laid his hands, that this people should be first, and heir of the covenant.

8 If then, besides this, the same thing was intimated through Abraham, we reach the perfection of our
knowledge. 9 Then what does he say to Abraham when he alone believed and it was imputed to him for
righteousness?

CHAPTER 14
Yes, but let us inquire whether the Lord has really given that covenant which he swore to the fathers that he
would give to the people. He gave it; but they were not worthy to receive it, because of their sins. 2 For the
prophet declares:
And Moses was fasting forty days and forty nights on Mount Sinai, that he might receive the covenant of
the Lord for the people. 3 And he received from the Lord two tablets, written in the spirit by the finger of the
hand of the Lord. And having received them, Moses carried them down to give to the people. 4 And the Lord
said to Moses, Moses, Moses, go down quickly; for your people, whom you have brought out of the land of
Egypt, have sinned. And Moses understood that they had again made molten images for themselves;
2
and he
threw the tablets out of his hands, and the tablets of the covenant of the Lord were broken. Moses had received
it, but they proved themselves unworthy.
5 Now, how did we receive it? Moses, a mere servant, received it; but the Lord himself, having suffered on
our behalf, has given it to us to be the people of inheritance. 6 But he was manifested in order that they might be
perfected in their sin, and that we, being constituted heirs through him,
3
might receive the covenant through the
Lord Jesus. 7 For he was prepared for this purpose, that by manifesting in person, he might redeem our hearts
from darkness (which were already surrendered to death, and delivered to the iniquity of error), and that he
might, by his word, enter into a covenant with us. 8 For it is written how the Father commands him to redeem
us
4
from darkness, and to prepare a holy people for himself.
9 Therefore, the prophet declares:
I, the Lord your God, have called you in righteousness,
and will take you by your hand, and will preserve you.
And I have given you for a covenant to the people, for a light to the nations,
to open the eyes of the blind,
and to bring those who are bound out of chains,
and those who sit in darkness out of the prison-house.
Therefore, you
5
realize from what we have been redeemed.

10 And again, the prophet says:
Behold, I have appointed you as a light of the nations,
that you might be my salvation to the farthest ends of the earth.
This is what the Lord God who redeems you says.

11 And again, the prophet says:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me;
because he has anointed me to preach the good-message to the poor.
6

He has sent me to heal the broken-hearted,
to proclaim deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind;
to announce the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of recompense;
to comfort all those who mourn.

CHAPTER 15
Further,
7
it is also written about the sabbath in the ten commandments which he spoke to Moses face to face on
Mount Sinai:
And you shall sanctify the sabbath of the Lord with pure hands and a pure heart.

2 And he says in another place:
If my sons keep the sabbath, then will I cause my mercy to rest upon them.

3 The sabbath is mentioned at the beginning of the creation:
And in six days God made the works of his hands,
and on the seventh day he ended,
and rested on it, and sanctified it.

4 My children, attend to the meaning of this expression, He finished in six days. This means that the Lord
will finish all things in 6,000 years, for a day with him signifies
8
a thousand years. 5 And he himself testifies to
me, saying,
9
Behold, the day of the Lord will be as a thousand years.
10
Therefore, my children, in six days,
that is, in 6,000 years, all things will be finished.
6 And he rested on the seventh day. This means: When his Son shall come, and shall destroy the time of
the wicked man,
11
and judge the ungodly, and change the sun and the moon and the stars,
1
then he will truly rest
rest on the seventh day.

7 Moreover, he says, You shall sanctify it with pure hands and a pure heart. Therefore, if anyone is now
able to sanctify the day which God has sanctified, by being
2
pure in heart in all things, we are deceived. 8 But
if
3
he
4
keeps it sanctified at that time by truly resting, when we ourselves are able to do so, since we have been
made righteous and have received the promisewhen sin no longer exists, but all things have been made new
by the Lord
5
at that time we shall be able to sanctify it, having been sanctified ourselves.
6

9 Further, he says to them:
I cannot endure your new moons and your sabbaths.

You perceive what he means: The present sabbaths are unacceptable to me, but that which I have made is,
even that in which, after giving rest to all things, I will make the beginning of the eighth day, that is a beginning
of another world. 10 Therefore, we also keep the eighth day with joyfulness, the day on which Jesus also rose
again from the dead, when he was made manifest, and ascended into the heavens.

CHAPTER 16 & 17
Moreover, I will also tell you about the temple. These wretched men, wandering in error, set their hope on the
temple, and not on their God who made them, for they are the house of God. 2 For they confined him by
consecration within the temple almost exactly like the heathen. But learn how the Lord speaks, when abolishing
it:
Who has measured the heaven with a span,
and the earth with his palm? Have not I?
This is what the Lord says:
Heaven is my throne, and the earth my footstool.
What kind of house will you build for me,
or what is the place of my rest?

You understand now
7
that their hope is vain.

3 Moreover, he says again:
Look at those who have destroyed this temple, even they will build it up again.

4 And It is happening now.
8
For because they went to war, it was destroyed by their enemies. And now,
they, as
9
the servants of the enemy, will rebuild it. 5 Again, it was revealed that the city and the temple and the
people of Israel would be surrendered. For the scripture says:
And it will come to pass in the last days,
that the Lord will deliver up the sheep of his pasture,
and their sheepfold and tower to destruction.

And it happened as the Lord had spoken.

6 Therefore, let us inquire whether there is still a temple of God. Yes, there iswhere he himself declared
that he is making and perfecting it. For it is written:
And it will come to pass when the week is completed,
that the temple of God will be built in glory in the name of the Lord.

7 Therefore, I find that a temple does exist. Then, I shall tell you how it will be built in the name of the
Lord. Before we believed in God, the habitation of our heart was corrupt and weak, indeed, as being like a
temple built with hands. For from doing things that were opposed to God, it was full of idolatry and was a
habitation of demons.
8 But it will be built in the name of the Lord. Now, make sure that the temple of the Lord is built in glory.
How? I shall tell you. Having received the forgiveness of sins, and placed our trust in the name of the Lord,
10

we have become new creatures, formed again from the beginning. Therefore God truly dwells in us as in his
habitation.
9 How? His word of faith, the
11
calling of promise, the wisdom of the ordinances, the commandments of the
doctrine, he himself prophesying in us, he himself dwelling in us; opening the doors of the temple, that is, the
mouth, to us who were enslaved by death; granting us repentance. He leads us into the incorruptible temple. 10
Therefore, he who wishes to be saved does not look to man, but to the One who dwells within him, and speaks
within him, and is amazed that he has never heard such words from his own mouth, nor has he himself ever
desired to hear them. This is the spiritual temple being built for the Lord.

17.1 As far as it was possible to give a simple explanation, my soul hopes that,
1
according to my desire,
none of the things
2
necessary for salvation have been omitted. 2 For if I should write to you about things present
present or
3
future, you would not understand, because such knowledge is hid in parables. The foregoing is
enough.

CHAPTER 18 & 19
But let us now pass to another sort of knowledge and teaching. There are two ways of teaching and of power:
one of light and one of darkness. 2 But there is a great difference between the two. For over one are stationed
the light-bearing messengers of God, but over the other are the messengers of the Adversary. 3 And he indeed is
Lord forever and ever, but the other is prince of the present
4
age of iniquity.
19.1 The way of light, then, is as follows. If anyone desires to travel to the appointed goal, he must be zealous
in his works. Therefore, the knowledge which is given to us for the purpose of walking in this way, is as
follows:
2 You shall love Him who created you.
You shall fear Him who made you.
5

3 You shall glorify Him who redeemed you from death.
You shall be simple in heart and generous in spirit.
4 You shall not associate with those who walk
6
in the way of death.
You shall hate everything that is displeasing to God.
5 You shall hate all hypocrisy.
You shall not forsake the commandments of the Lord.
6 You shall not exalt yourself, but shall be humble-minded in all things.
7

You shall not take glory to yourself.
7 You shall not plot evil against your neighbor.
You shall not allow arrogance into your soul.
8 You shall not commit fornication.
You shall not commit adultery.
9 You shall not commit pederasty.
You shall not let the word of God come forth from your lips with any kind of impurity.
10 You shall not be a respecter of persons when rebuking anyone for transgressions.
You shall be meek.
11 You shall be peaceable.
You shall tremble at the words which you have heard.
12 You shall not harbor resentment against your brother.
You shall not doubt as to whether something shall be or not.
13 You shall not take the
8
name of the Lord in vain.
You shall love your neighbor more than
9
your own soul.
14 You shall not murder a child by abortion; nor, again, shall you destroy it after it is born.
15 You shall not withdraw your hand from your son or from your daughter, but from their infancy you shall
teach the fear of the Lord.
10

16 You shall not be covetous of what belongs to your neighbor, nor shall you be avaricious.
11

17 You shall not be yoked in soul with the haughty, but associate with the righteous and humble.
18 You shall receive troubles that befall you as good knowing that without God nothing happens.
12

19 You shall not be double-minded or double-tongued,
13
for a double-tongue is a snare of death.
14

20 You shall be subject to those over you as a type of God,
15
in reverence and fear.
21 You shall not issue a bitter command to your slave or maidservant, who hope
16
in the same God,
17
lest
they
18
should cease to fear the God who is over both of you; 22 because he came not to call men according to
status, but to call those whom the Spirit has prepared.
23 You shall share all things with your neighbor.
24 You shall
19
not claim anything as your own; for if you are partakers in common of things which are
20

incorruptible, how much more should you be of those things which are corruptible!
21

25 You shall not be quick to speak, for the mouth is a snare of death. As far as possible, you shall be pure for
the sake of your soul.
26 Do not be ready to stretch forth your hands to receive, while drawing them back when it is time to give.

and going to
exhort them, and striving to save souls by the word, or working with your hands to provide a ransom for your
sins.

CHAPTER 20
But the way of the Black One is devious and full of accursedness. For it is the way of eternal
8
death with
punishment, 2 and in it are the things that destroy the soul: idolatry, arrogance, the exaltation of power,
hypocrisy, double-mindedness, adultery, murder, robbery, conceit, transgressions,
9
deceit, malice, willful
stubbornness, sorcery, magic, avarice,
10
and lack of the fear of God.
11
3 Those who walk in this way are
persecutors of good men, haters of the truth, lovers of falsehood, who do not acknowledge the reward of
righteousness, who do not adhere to the good, nor pass righteous judgment, who pay no attention to the cause of
widow and orphan. 4 They are vigilant not for the fear of God, but for wickedness. They are far removed and
distant from meekness and patience. 5 They love vanities and pursue rewards, are without pity for the poor, and
do not labor to aid those oppressed by toil. 6 Prone to speak evil, they ignore their Maker, are murderers of
children, and destroy what God has formed. 7 They turn away from the needy, oppress the afflicted, are
advocates of the rich, and unjust judges of the poorthey are altogether sinful through and through.

CHAPTER 21
Therefore,
12
it is good that a man who has learned all the commandments of the Lord,
13
as many as have been
written here, should walk in them. 2 For he who keeps these shall be glorified in the kingdom of God; but he
who chooses other things shall be destroyed together with his works. 3 For this reason, there will be a
resurrection;
14
for this reason there will be a reward.
4 I beg those of you who are in high positions, if you will receive any counsel of my goodwill, keep among
yourselves those to whom you may show kindness. Do not forsake them. 5 For the day is at hand on which all
things will perish with the Evil One. The Lord is at hand, and so is his reward.
6 I beg you, yet again and again: be good lawgivers
15
one to another, remain faithful advisers of one
another, take all hypocrisy out from among you. 7 And may God, who is Lord over the whole world, give to
you wisdom, understanding, prudence, knowledge of his commandments,
16
with patience. 8 And be taught by
God, diligently seeking what the Lord asks from you; and do it that you may be found worthy
17
in the day of
judgment. 9 And if you have any remembrance of what is good, meditate on these things and remember me, that
both my desire and watchfulness may result in some good. I beg you, entreating this as a favor.
10 While yet the good vessel is with you, do not fail in any one of those things,
18
but unceasingly seek after
them, and fulfill every commandment; for these things are worthy.
19
11 Therefore, I have been all the more
eager to write to you, as best I could,
20
that I might make you glad. 12 Farewell, children of love and peace. The
Lord of glory and of all grace be with your spirit. Amen.
