WHO MAY PARTICIPATE? All Virginia Beach fifth graders are eligible to participate in the Battle of the Books. Each team must consist of no more than 5 members, have an adult manager and supply a team name. Participants may only compete on one team. An adult manager can only manage one team.
HOW DOES A TEAM REGISTER? Registration forms are available at all Virginia Beach Public Library locations and at www.vbgov.com/libraries beginning November 1. The team name, team members names and contact information must be available at the time of registration. Each participant will turn in an individual registration sheet. A parent or guardian must sign the back of the registration sheet, as it serves as a model release allowing pictures to be taken during the events. WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE FOR THE BATTLE? A preliminary battle will be held at VBPL branches across the city. The winners from each library will receive a small prize and move on to the final competition at the MEO Central Library.
During the competition teams will be seated together in the front of the room. There are 4 rounds to each program (easy, medium, medium-hard and hard). Each round will have 10 questions one from each book. All answers must be complete and specific. In the event of a tie, there will be tie-breaker questions for the applicable teams.
WHAT DOES A TEAM MANAGER DO? The adult team manager may be a parent, teacher or anyone over the age of 18 who will serve as a contact between the team and the Virginia Beach Public Library.
