Digital Storytelling
November 2013
Artifact Description:
This artifact is my digital story project, Five Little Joeys Jumping on the
Couch. Its a story that was made on Educreations, which can be used on the
computer or iPad. The story was changed, and it is similar to Five Monkeys
Jumping on the Bed. A recording of the story was inserted into Educreations,
so, as a student reads the digital book, the student is also listening to the
story.
Wisconsin Teacher Licensure Standard Alignment:
This experience best aligns with Wisconsin Teacher Standard 6
Communication The teacher uses effective verbal and nonverbal
communication techniques as well as instructional media and technology to
foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the
classroom. My experience aligns with standard six because in the digital
storytelling, my partner and I had to record ourselves telling the story using
fluency and expression.
As a result of this experience, I have learned that I can use effective verbal,
nonverbal, and media communication techniques in my classroom. I also
learned that there are many ways in which I can seek to communicate and
encourage many modes of communication in the classroom. Lastly I learned
a new communication tool which includes audiovisual aids and computers,
to enrich learning opportunities.
UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill, and Disposition Statement Alignment:
This experience best aligns with KS3.a Communicates Clearly and
Accurately The candidate's spoken and written language are correct,
expressive and clear, with well-chosen vocabulary that enriches teaching
and communicates thoughtfully, responsively, and effectively for a wide
range of student understanding and encourages appropriate student
language development. My professor and I believe that this story has
correct written language; the story is said in an expressive and clear tone.
The Five Little Joeys Jumping on the Couch is a story that engages students
and communicates effectively for all students.
As a result of this experience, I know that communicating clearly and
accurately will help my students understand and enrich their learning. I am
also one of the language models in their lives, and I must communicate
efficiently so they learn to know how to use the tools on communicating
properly.
Secondary Alignment: KS1.d. DEMONSTRATES KNOWLEDGE OF RESOURCES
Personal Reflection:
What I learned about teaching and learning
I learned that communication is very important when it comes to teaching
or just life in general. When teaching my students, I must be able to speak
and write language correctly, expressively, and clearly, and if they dont
understand me, then I must be able to clear up any confusion for them. I
must also choose vocabulary that enriches teaching for all my students
understanding. My students get to listen to me when I talk, and they also
get to see how I talk to them. Communication is more than just talking;
communication is also showing emotions and body language and also
communicating with music, technology, etc.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator
As a result of this experience, Ive learned to use a new resource. I had to
use the computer and iPad to create our digital story. The program used is
called Educreations. It took a few times to get out the kinks. However,
playing around and getting familiar with the program helped make the
digital story easier. Educreations is a good source, but there are positives
and negatives with the program. In the end, whatever I have prepared for
my students, I must make it engaging, interesting, enjoyable, and fun. Plus,
it must encourage learning and in this case, language development because
they get to listen to a story and how fluency and expression is used.
