- 3d Modeling:

1. Modeling concept

Associativity :
- The model parameters provided by user.
- The sketch (eg. Line ) has properties: slope , length, initial coordinate etc .

Centralized :
- The model generated is stored in a database and it is unique( one model)
- It can be viewed in many views .
- A change in the model automatically change the views.

Integrated :
- The finalized CAD model used for FEM analysis, product development,
sale, fabrication and shared with other professionals.
- A feed back after field test will be taken to improve the design further.
2. Sketching
The basic tool for construction of a solid model which helps
designer to conceive novel ideas.
The basic elements in sketching in a CAD package are
(1) sketch plane/ reference plane:
- Principal planes(XY, YZ, etc),
- Auxiliary plane that forms an angle with the principal plane
(2) Geometry of the sketch
- points, Line, circle, arc, ellipse, polygons,
(3) Dimensions of the sketch
- size (its unit mm, inch), angles, positions
(4) Constraints of the sketch
- parallel, perpendicular, midpoint..

Sketch plane/ reference plane:
Primary planes (PP): Front, side, top, bottom, rear.

Auxiliary plane(AP): makes an angle with principal planes

- All solid models do have PP
-Complex objects needs AP
-
Example: Auxiliary reference Plane
- Elliptical extruded features on inclined plane
Sketching :
- Quite often sketches are constructed in 2D plane
- base element for solid modeling
- CAD software automatically update dimension if sketch is altered
Dimensioning:
A standard way of specifying the numerical
values of locations, size , angle of features of
a solid model.
In CAD software units are specified before
hand - metric unit
- British unit
Various standards of dimensioning
-ISO : International organization for standard
- ANSI: American National Standards Institute
Dimensioning
- Unconstrained dimension
- Smart dimensioning tool
- Constrained dimension
- Smart dimensioning tool
- Over constrained dimension
- CAD software warn you the over constraints
-Ordinate dimensioning
- Based on reference point
- What are the benefits of such dimensioning?
