Human Biology Laboratory 4: Body Tissues and Organization List The 4 Tissue Types and Give A General Function: Pg. 40

This document provides an overview of a human biology laboratory on body tissues and organization. It lists the four main tissue types and their general functions. It also defines different tissue types such as epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous tissue. The document outlines the key structures and functions of different body tissues that students will learn to identify under the microscope during the laboratory. It discusses anatomical terminology like anatomical position and directional terms. It also covers the major body cavities and regions as well as the three layers of skin and their components. The goal is for students to understand human tissues and anatomy.

Laboratory 4: Body Tissues and Organization

List the 4 tissue types and give a general function: pg. 40

1. epithelial tissue-

2. connective tissue

3.muscular tissue

4. nervous tissue

Define the following:

Simple: one layer

Stratified: more than one

Squamous: flat, thin, scaly

Cuboidal: cube

Columnar: long column

Pseudostratified: false layers, looks like a lot but really are not

Body Tissues (pg. 41-50)
- Start to identify and recognize the different tissues found in the human body.
- Sketch what you see in your microscope field of view in the spaces below.

Define Anatomical Position-

Define the following Directional Terms (Table 4.1, pg. 51 and Figure 4.17, pg. 52):

Superior: Above

Inferior: Below

Anterior (Ventral): front

Hyaline cartilage

Posterior (Dorsal): back

Medial: close to mid line

Lateral: far from mid line

Proximal: close to

Distal: far from

Superficial: close to surface

Deep: far from

Planes of the Body (pg. 53):

Frontal Plane: front and back

Sagittal Plane: left and right

Transverse Plane: top and bottom

Body Cavities- please list the organs found in the following cavities (pg. 53)

Dorsal Body Cavities

Cranial: brain

Vertebral: spine

Ventral Body Cavities

Thoracic: lungs, rib cage

Abdominal: digestive organs

Pelvic: reproductive organs, bladder

What organ separates the thoracic and abdominal cavity?

Know the following Regions of the Body (Figure 4.22, pg. 54)
Facial- face
Nasal- nose
Oral- mouth
Cervical- neck
Pectoral- chest
Scapular- shoulder blades
Vertebral- middle of the back
Sternal- middle of the chest
Lumbar- lower back
Gluteal- booty meat
Axillary- arm pit
Brachial- arm
Antebrachial- forearm
Carpal- hand
Digital (2)- finger
Abdominal- tummy area
Umbilical- belly buttom
Coxal- hip
Pubic- #pubess
Femoral- thigh
Patellar- knee
Tarsal- ankle
Pedal- foot
List the 3 layers of skin from superficial to deep (pg. 57).
1.epidermis

2.dermis

3.hypodermis

Look at the skin model. Be comfortable identifying structures and know the
functions (pg. 57).

Epidermis- upper most layer of the skin

Dermis- middle layer of the skin

Hypodermis- lower most layer of the skin

Hair follicle- small cavity that holds hair root

Hair root- part of hair that is in the hair follicle

Hair shaft- part of hair that is out side the skin

Arrector pili muscle- involuntary reactions, goose nips

Oil gland-

Sweat gland- thermo regulation, controls body tempature

Adipose tissue- fat
