Michael Vick pointed the fin- ger squarely at himself. The New York Jets backup quarterback was stunningly critical Wednesday when he acknowledged that he couldve done a better job of getting ready to play last Sun- day. The comments drew the ire of fans and the media and kudos from his head coach. When Mike looked at it, Rex Ryan said Thursday, he had the guts to say, You know what? Maybe, I could have done more. I could have pre- paredbetter. Rather than be alarmed by Vicks admission, Ryan ap- plauded the quarterbacks honesty. I think the way I chal- lenged the team, in fact, this is exactly what I wanted, Ryan said. I want guys to take a stand. Vick is a backup quarter- back who still draws a crowd of media around his locker be- fitting a starter. He knows all eyes are on him, especially with Geno Smith struggling through the Jets 1-4 start. When Smith was benched at halftime of New Yorks 31-0 drubbing at San Diego last Sunday, Vick came in to try to add a spark. Instead, Vick struggled just as much as Smith in his first significant playing time this season, finishing 8 of 19 for 47 yards, compared to 4 of 12 for 27 yards by Smith. Then came his jaw-drop- ping comments Wednesday that he perhaps took his scout- team reps during practice for granted. Vick was widely crit- icized for his apparent lack of preparation, especially for someone who has claimed to still have the ability to lead a team to the playoffs and be- yond. I understand how it could be interpreted the way it was interpreted, Vick said Thurs- day. Honestly, when I heard about it, I knew I shouldve worded it probably a different way. That was just me taking responsibility. Im very hard on myself. I expect a lot of my- self when I go out on the field and I play, and I know my teammates expect a lot out of me. As thebackup quarterback, Vick takes very few, if any, snaps with the first-team of- fense. Those go to Smith, and Vick works with the backups and the scout team, some- thing that Vick is unaccus- tomedto doing. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said he hasnt seen any drop-off from Vick in his preparation from week to week. It didnt come out the way that he was thinking about it, Mornhinweg said. Weve both done that, where you say something and think, Thats not really what I meant. Prep- aration, Mike is diligent with his preparation, now. Theres no question about that. Dennis Waszak Jr., The Associated Press Ryan likes Vicks candor NFL | For results of Thursdays Colts-Texans game, go to SportsDayDFW.com Coach says QB has guts for admitting he was unprepared Denis Poroy/The Associated Press NewYork Jets quarterback Michael Vick struggled in his first significant playing time this season against head coach Mike McCoys San Deigo Chargers. NFL penalties up more than two per game Penalty flags are being thrown about 15 percent more often than they were last sea- son through Week 5. NFL games are averaging about 17 penalties, up more than two per game from the 14.7 to this point in 2013, ac- cording to the league. Howev- er, games are actually running a few minutes shorter. Also, 15 touchdowns have been wiped out already, up from 11 at this time a year ago, according to STATS. Im certainly not surprised that fouls are up. Were in a good place, NFL Vice Presi- dent of Officiating Dean Blan- dino said. I dont see a dimin- ished product on the field. Illegal contact, defensive holding, defensive illegal use of hands and offensive pass inter- ference are all at Week 5 highs over the last 20 years, STATS said. The jumps from 2013 are staggering, particularly for ille- gal contact (which has more than tripled, from 15 to 56) and defensive holding (more than doubled, from 52 to 113). There already have been more illegal contact calls than the 54for all of last season. Ex-GM: Domestic violence went ignored Former Chicago Bears gen- eral manager Jerry Angelo said NFL teams didnt discipline players in hundreds and hun- dreds of domestic violence in- cidents during his 30-year ca- reer, USA Today reported Thursday. I made a mistake, Angelo told the newspaper. I was hu- man. I was part of it. Im not proud of it. Angelo was the Bears GM from 2001to 2011. We knew it was wrong, Angelo told USA Today. For whatever reason, it just kind of got glossed over. Im no psychi- atrist, so I cant really get into what that part of it is. Im just telling you how I was. Ive got to look at myself first. And I was part of that, but I didnt stand alone. Our business is to win games. Angelo said. We got our priorities out of order. Teen with laser pointer discovered DETROIT The Detroit Lions have barred a teenager from all Ford Field events for using a laser pointer at a game against the Bills. Detroit city attorney Melvin Hollowell identified the alleged offender as a 17-year-old from West Bloomfield, Mich. He saidthe teen will be ticketed for disorderly conduct, a misde- meanor. The teen was using a ticket held by a season-ticket holder. The Lions are revoking that persons tickets for the rest of the season. AROUND THE NFL Arizona: QB Drew Stanton (concussion) said he is symp- tomfree but hopes to pass tests Friday that would clear him to play Sunday against the Red- skins. If he cant play, rookie Logan Thomas will start. Cincinnati: WR A.J. Green missed practice because of an injuredbigtoe onhis right foot. ... MLBVontaze Burfict had his second consecutive full prac- tice, an indication hes ready to play. He sat out the last week following his second concus- sion of the season. Jacksonville: WR Cecil Shorts III (hamstring) re- turned to practice after missing more than a week. San Francisco: QB Colin Kaepernick was fined $10,000 by the NFL for the pink Beats by Dre brand name head- phones he wore around his neck after Sundays game. The leagues contract is with Bose.
