The Office of Student Nutrition has
exciting news! SOESMM has been
selected to receive funding from a
national Farm to School grant.

What is Farm to School? The National Farm to School
Network states Farm to School enriches the connection
communities have with fresh, healthy food and local food
producers by changing food purchasing and education prac-
tices at schools and preschools. Here at District Five, weve
put our own spin on Farm to School and we are implement-
ing Farm to Five! Farm to Five expands local food offer-
ings in our schools, engages students to increase their con-
sumption of locally grown produce, creates mentorship and
leadership opportunities, and integrates food and nutrition-
based learning across the school curriculum. Our vision is
that Farm to Five will improve the health of District Five
students, their families and the community.

While this school year is our first official year piloting Farm
to Five, weve been busy working for some months. We are
planting new garden beds. Our beds were built by CATS
students, compliments of Farm to Five! Have you noticed
the new and delicious options on our schools lunch menu?
Also, Farm to Five!

We cant wait to share this years successes with you and to
see how the program progresses at our school.
AG Simulator

On Tuesday, October 21st, our second - fifth grade
students will have a unique experience! SC Farm
Bureau's Ag in the Classroom will bring SC's first AG
SIMULATOR to Seven Oaks Elementary School!

Since October is National Farm to School month, our
students will see and hear how SC's farmers harvest
their row crops. The simulator will provide an
educational experience for students to understand the
connection between people and agriculture.

The AG SIMULATOR will remain on display after
school until 7:00 PM so our parents and other
people from the community can take part in this
event.
