Windows XP Zip File Ability

Windows XP comes with built-in file compression functionality, allowing users to create, extract, and modify .zip files without additional software. To create a compressed file, right click in Windows Explorer and select "Compressed (zipped) Folder". Files can be added or extracted by opening the compressed file and copying/pasting files in the same way as Windows Explorer. While very similar to other zip tools, there are some known issues like files becoming unavailable if the source window closes before pasting.

XPs Built In Zip Functionality 09/2004

Windows XP comes with built in file compression (ZIP) functionality that works much the same as Windows Explorer. It is no longer a
requirement to install a ZIP application such as WINZip or TUGZip.

Create a Compressed File:
1) Right click on a blank spot in the right pane of Windows Explorer.
2) Click New.
3) Click Compressed (zipped) Folder



4) You can rename the file immediately or by highlighting and selecting File Rename from the Windows Explorer Menu Bar.

5) Note the icon looks like a file folder with a zipper on it.



6) Double Click the file to open it
7) Notice the difference in the Title Bar Text/Graphic between a Compressed File folder and a Windows Explorer folder.

8) Mark/Highlight the files you want to insert into the Compressed File.
9) Right Click and Select Copy.



10) Right Click in the Compressed Files window pane and Select Paste.

You can attach or copy this file just the same as you would a Zip file created by a third party file compression utility such as WINZip.

Working With a Compressed File:
These options extract, update, add or delete any or all files are available. The process is closer to working with Windows Explorer than any
of the third party utilities.
1) To add a file open the compressed file, copy new file from source and paste it into the window that is the compressed file.
2) To delete a file open the compressed file, highlight the file in the compressed files window, right click and select delete.
3) To extract a single file open compressed file, highlight the file to extract, right click and select copy and paste file into the correct
location using Windows Explorer.
4) To update a file copy source file, open compressed file, right click and select paste and answer Yes to replace.
The same way you mark all files or some files in Windows Explorer is the way you do it in the compressed files window. The cut, copy and
paste options, however activated, are for the most part the same.

Known Issue:
1) If your source files location is a compressed file window and you close that window before you have pasted the file to its new
location the file will not be available because the source has been closed and you will not have the paste option available to click.
2) There are times when the compressed file gives an error about corruption and is suddenly blank. Closing this corrupt window and
reopening the compressed file should fix the issue but any changes since last save are lost.
