02 Transition to General Management 2012 - 2013
Introduction

unique challenges. They need exceptional
leadership skills to manage cross-functional
teams; they need an international mindset;
they need the ability to successfully manage
continuous change; they need the skills,

decisions and implement them, and to
complicate matters further, they need to do all
this whilst also creating value.

you drive effective change. Designed and

the way in which they exercise judgement.
Transition to General Management
is designed to smoothe and accelerate
the transition from functional/technical
management into general management. The
Management Acceleration Programme

executives equipping them with a general
management perspective. The Asian
International Executive Programme

challenges in Asia.
Gain broader perspective to maximise
your value impact
Recognising the new trends in the workplace
and pressures on time that managers are
facing, we have developed our highly
successful International Executive Programme
into a four-week modular programme
and renamed it Transition to General

international four-week, modular format
programme, with an optional fth week follow-
up module, that will equip you with all of the
skills and knowledge you will need for your
transition to general management. It will give
you the condence you will need to manage

information to those above and below you
in your organisation.

Leading others
The hardest part of managing the transition
from functional to general management is
letting go of the idea that you have all the
answers. Delegation, leadership, motivation,

more important to the general manager. This
programme is designed specically to address
this transition to leading others more effectively
to achieve a broader set of organisational goals.

04 Transition to General Management 2012 - 2013
05 Transition to General Management 2012 - 2013
One-week follow-up Bootcamp
The Transition to General Management
Bootcamp is an optional 4.5-day segment
designed to turn your insights from the four-
week programme into action and enables
you to return to INSEAD to apply your skills
and knowledge in a business management
simulation. It is less about discussing and
learning than doing. In one intensive week
on campus, we take you through a series of
dynamic activities that will help you to put the
key theme of value creation into practice in
your organisation.
Managing for value and Blue Line
Management in Action
You will be given a brief review of the most
important concepts from the Transition to
General Management programme with
updates, examples and new reections. You
will then put the concepts into action with the
underlying objective of creating value for your
organisation.
Developing, pitching and getting buy-in to
your business plan
You will turn a conceptual idea into a concrete
business plan for a new product, business or
business unit whilst ensuring long-term value
creation in the business.
This section is delivered by professional
entrepreneur Paul Kewene-Hite, who has
turned around companies and has created new
ventures around the world from the US to China
to Europe.
Team business competition
As part of a team-based exercise, you will
create and develop a new business in a new
geography with minimal support from
corporate headquarters. Your success (and that
of the other teams) will be measured according
to the primary objective, which remains, as
always, value creation.
This part of the programme entails a fully
computerised competitive business simulation
(the SIGMA Challenge) set in a highly
competitive and international environment that
requires participants to take a comprehensive
and global view of the business to be
successful.
How you learn is as important
as what you learn.
After half a century of educating managers,
we at INSEAD know that simply passing on
knowledge isnt enough. The Transition to
General Management programme carefully
mixes and matches a wide range of different
experiences into a powerful learning process.
During the four weeks, youll learn as much
from each other as you do from our faculty. In
fact, the programme is built around this belief
with supporting and learning from each other.
By sharing experiences with both professors
and participants, youll focus diverse and
inspiring minds on your day-to-day business
issues. This sharing continues beyond the
classroom in lunches, breaks and social
activities, all designed to facilitate contact
and exchange.
And yes, we have the humility to admit that
we learn from you too. The school thrives on
this distinctive meeting of minds from all over
the world. We build bridges not only between
cultures and companies but between theory
and practice.
Online platform
A few weeks before the programme starts
you will receive a login and password for
the dedicated online platform. This will give
you further programme information, as well
as the schedule and preparatory reading to
down-load. Youll also have access to proles
of your fellow participants. Thats because the
Transition to General Management programme
is much more than a course its also a
community.
Post-programme follow-up
The online platform keeps the community
connected long after the programme is over.
But as well as a networking medium, its an
ongoing learning tool. Online access to INSEAD
research databases also helps ensure that your
professional and personal growth never stops.

personied in its faculty. INSEADs professors

to General Management programme such a
great learning experience. But they all share
a deep understanding of business and a
commitment to helping you do it better.
09 Transition to General Management 2012 - 2013
The objective for all organisations is the
same, whether family-owned, non-proft,
publicly traded or state-owned, and that
objective is value creation.
Lets be clear about this there are no
other, equally valid, competing objectives!
Thats why value creation is at the centre
of the Transition to General Management
programme.
The programme itself creates value for
organisations, by helping participants to
see the big picture and to integrate new
perspectives. These new perspectives in turn
enable them to be more effective and higher-
performance managers. In the end thats
what the Transition to General Management
Programme is all about.
Kevin Kaiser (Canada)
Programme Director
Professor of Management Practice
This is the point in your career where the
rubber hits the road! As a teacher, that makes
the Transition to General Management
Programme very special. On the one hand, all
the participants are experiencing the same
transition to general management, so their
needs are very clear and theyre all open
to learning. On the other hand, theyre very
demanding and critical students, which is a
great challenge.
In the end, were only able to do an excellent
job because of the kind of people we attract.
Their needs are very immediate, but when we
meet up with them a year later, they all say
the same thing: the impact is lasting.

What is the difference between the former
International Executive Programme and
Transition to General Management?
The Transition to General Management
programme builds on the success of the
former International Executive Programme.
It will be held over a duration of four weeks
with an optional fth week follow-up module.
It will continue to deliver the high-impact,
and relevant, content and concepts of the
International Executive Programme,
in a more concise and focused manner.
Can I choose to participate
in more than one location?
Recognising the needs and diverse locations
of many senior executives, the Transition to
General Management programme allows
participants to complete their two modules of
two weeks in France and either of INSEADs
campuses in Singapore and Abu Dhabi.
Why should I choose INSEAD
above other business schools?
We think our diversity is our distinguishing
feature. INSEAD is probably the only school
where youll nd 30 nationalities in the same class.
And its certainly the only school where no single
one of those 30 nationalities will predominate.
Having said that, our faculty are among the best
(and most diverse) in the world too!
16 Transition to General Management 2012 - 2013
Why is diversity so important?
The obvious answer is that business is more
international than ever before. But its the
subtle answer thats much more powerful.
With so many different national and cultural
perspectives to learn from, you really will start
to see things differently. By challenging your
old assumptions, youll become aware of new
possibilities and start to understand how very
different people think.
Four weeks seems like a big commitment
can I afford so much time away?
In fact, you need four weeks to gain the distance
for reection on your work and yourself. We
also need that time to cover the ambitious
curriculum. More importantly you need four
weeks to go through the uniquely INSEAD
process of unlearning and then relearning
about business from an entirely different angle.
Remember that the modular version offers a
little more exibility if desired. The programme
runs four times a year to accommodate even to
the most hectic schedule.
Why should I do a General Management
Programme?
INSEADs world-class, comprehensive business
leadership General Management Programmes
will equip you with the skills, knowledge and
the condence to achieve a successful transition
on your journey to becoming a great business
leader. Created and delivered by some of
the worlds best faculty, each one of these
programmes will challenge assumptions and
enhance leadership skills, delivering a broader
