0 INTRODUCTION
According to the article in Forbes (Smith, 2014), there are an overall of 31 newcomers
to the worlds most sustainable companies of 2014. Among the list, Johnson & Johnson
(J&J) has ranked 57
th
within The Worlds 100 Most Sustainable Companies, 2014. The
reason why this company has been chosen in this study is because it is one of the
worlds most powerful brands even in Malaysia which engages in research and
development, manufacture and sale of personal care hygienic products,
pharmaceuticals and surgical equipment.
1.1 DEFINITION OF SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainable is a real term meant to describe products or actions that help sustain,
and in some cases, protect this planet's resources, such as energy, water and air
(Chait, 2014). Based on the challenge in operation management highlighted by Jay
Heizer (Heizer, 2013, p. 55), operations managers had concern about designing
products and process that are ecologically sustainable. This means designing green
products and packaging that minimize resource use, can be recycled or reused, and are
generally environmentally friendly.
2.0 SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS
Johnson & Johnson (J&J) are moving towards greener product. The product
innovation is called Earthwards and the process are recognized as such only if they
have achieved a greater 10 percent improvement in at least three of 12 goals across
seven impact areas; materials used, packaging, energy reduction, waste reduction,
water reduction, positive social impact or benefit; and product innovation. Moreover, J&J
have been using distinctive packaging where they believe that designing and
manufacturing more sustainable products is the key to creating a healthy future.
3.0 ANALYSIS OF DESIGN AND PRODUCTION FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Companies often refer to sustainability as a journey, and innovation as a key driver in
the sustainable product development process. J&J also created a formal process to
promote greener product innovation which is called Earthwards.
3.1 J&J and its Greener Product
Based on the article in GreenBiz (Iannuzzi, 2013), Earthwards program helps J&J to
design greener products. Based on lifecycle thinking, the Earthwards process has been
applied to an array of products from their consumer products including pharmaceuticals
and medical devices and diagnostics sectors. Successful emerge product from the
Earthwards process are recognized as such only if they have achieved a greater 10
percent improvement in at least three of 12 goals across seven impact areas; materials
used, packaging, energy reduction, waste reduction, water reduction, positive social
impact or benefit; and product innovation. According to this article, about 36 products
have received Earthward recognition. According to J&J strategies, they have set the
goal of 60 Earthward recognition by 2015.
3.2 J&J Sustainable Packaging Strategy
J&J sustainable packaging strategy is Doing less bad and more good. According
to their website, they believe that designing and manufacturing more sustainable
products is the key to creating a healthy future. Furthermore, J&J have been using
distinctive packaging which is recyclable, reusable which minimized the raw material
use.
In addition, based on J&Js completed Healthy Planet 2010 Goals, a set of targets
focused on carbon reduction, water use, paper and packaging, waste reduction,
compliance and external manufacturing, among others. Prior to this, J&J had launches
Healthy Future 2015 (N.J, 2011), and the goal is to have all office paper and paper
based packaging contain either more than 30 percent post-consumer recycled content
or fibre from certified forests. At the end of 2010, 97 percent of packaging and 92
percent of office paper met these goals.
As human health and well-being is firmly linked to a healthy planet, Johnson &
Johnson has been regarded an environmental stewardship continues to be a core focus
for them(N.J, 2011). Agressive reduction of targets of CO
2
emissions, water usage and
waste disposal are supplemented by product stewardship goals that will help the
company strive to introduce at least 60 products that meet the companys rigorous
sustainability innovation criteria.
4.0 CONCLUSION
Based on these articles and review regarding the Johnson & Johnson (J&J)
sustainability approached, it can be conclude that J&J company is moving toward
greener product in order to meet the sustainability. Furthermore, it is also believed that
their goals of using greener product will have a positive social impact and benefit on
product innovation. In addition, their distinctive product does help to reduce waste,
water, material, CO2 emissions and energy consumption, thus, helping the company
strive to introduce at least 60 products that meet the companys rigorous sustainability
innovation criteria.
