NUMERICAL SOLUTIONS OF SESSIONAL TEST I

B.Tech. (Mechanical Engineering) III Semester, 2014-15

Time: 60 min. NCE-301: Fluid Mechanics Max. Marks: 30
PART A (4 X 2.5 = 10 Marks)
Answer ALL the Questions
3. Calculate mass density, weight density and specific volume of one litre of an oil having
specific gravity 0.9.
Solution:
Volume = 1 litre = 0.001 sq. m.
Mass Density of oil, = 0.9 * Mass Density of water = 0.9*1000 = 900 kg/m3
Weight Density of Oil = * g = 900*9.81 = 8829 N/m
3
Specific Volume = 1/ = 0.00111 m

4. Find the density of a metallic body, which floats at the interface of mercury of sp. Gravity
13.6 and water such that 40% of its volume is submerged in mercury and 60% in water.
Solution:
Weight of the body = Weight of water displaced + Weight of mercury displaced
*9.81*V = 0.6V*9.81*1000 + 0.4V*13600*9.81,
where V=Volume of the body, = density of the body
= (0.6*1000)+(0.4*13600) = 6040 kg/m

PART B (2 X 5 = 10 Marks)
Answer ALL the Questions
5. In figure, the liquids at A and B are water and oil, respectively and the manometer liquid
is mercury. h1= 10 cm, h2= 3 cm and h3= 11 cm. Calculate head difference hA-hB in terms
of cm of water. Take specific weight of oil as 9000 N/m
3
.

Solution: hA+ h1 = hB+ specific gravity of Oil*h3+ specific gravity of Hg*h2
hA+10= hB+ (9000/9810)*11+ (13.6*3)
hA- hB = 40. 89 cm of water
