Purlins Design

This document provides details on the design of galvanized C-purlins for a sloping roof with a 15 degree slope. Key details include: - The purlins have a 3.6m span and are spaced 1.2m apart. - Loads on the purlins include a roof self-weight of 0.035 kN/m2, purlin self-weight of 0.02 kN/m2, and other accessories of 0.5 kN/m, for a total unfactored load of 0.85 kN/m. - A C7516 purlin with dimensions of 75mm depth, 45mm width, and 1

Design of Galvanised hi-Tensile C-Purlins to BS5950 : Part 5, 1987 : Cl 5.

Job Title : Purlin Design
Date : 9/11/2014
Purlin on sloping roof (simply supported)
1) Dimensions
The span of the purlins L = 3.6 m
Spacing of purlins (on slope) s = 1.2 m
Rafter slope = 15 0.2618 rad
2) Loadings
Roofing self-weight (on slope) = 3.11 kg/m = 0.035 kN/m
Self weight of purlins = 2.21 kg/m = 0.02 kN/m
Insulation, tie rods, & accessories = 0.5 kN/m
Total dead loads DL = 0.56 kN/m
Imposed load, (on plan) LL = 0.25 kN/m = 0.29 kN/m
Unfactored loads DL + LL = 0.85 kN/m
Design loads Wx = 1.4DL + 1.6LL = 1.24 kN/m
Use W = 1.24 kN/m to design
For simply supported span,
Design maximum bending Mx = WL/8
moment = 2.01 kN/m
3) Purlin dimensions
Try Purlin Type: C7516
D = 75 mm Mass = 2.21 kg/m
B = 45 mm Ix = 0.231 x10
6
mm
4
L = 12 mm Zx = 6.16 x10
3
mm
3
t = 1.6 mm E = 205000 N/mm
Y (min. yield stress) = 450 N/mm
P
y
(Design strength) = 450 N/mm (BS 5950: Part 5 Cl. 3.3.2)
(High tensile galvanised steel)
4) Bending stress calculation
Design Moment, Mx = 2.013 kNm
Bending Stress at x-x Mx/Zx = 326.75 N/mm (MPa)
For BS5950, Part 5 Cl. 5.2.2.2
Max. allowable bending stress, P
0
= [1.13-0.0019(D/t) (Ys/280)^1/2] P
y
= 457.6917 N/mm (MPa)
Factor of safety on bending stress, P
0
/ (Mx/Zx) = 1.401 PASS
5) Deflection Check
Ratio of Deflection limits = span / 200
Deflection limits, dl = 18 mm
For 3.6 meters, simply supported
Deflection, D = 5/384 WL
4
/EIx
= 57.3811 mm
