LAB 1: Resistance Measurements
Objectives
In this lab, you will use a digital multimeter (DMM) to measure resistance, and perform tolerance
calculations to verify that the components are within tolerance. Reminder: For all of the labs you do
in this course: if you write down a measurement result without the correct prefix and unit, it will
be WRONG!
Equipment
1. Electronics Learning Lab kit
2. Resistors as listed in Table 1
3. Digital Multimeter (DMM)
4. Test leads: 1 red and 1 black
5. Wires (stripped at both ends)
Experiment and Results
A. How to Use the DMM to Measure Resistances
1. Get 2 cables: 1 red and 1 black.
2. Turn on the power: you should see the red LED.
3. Select the correct measurement mode to measure resistance.
4. Connect your cables to the DMM: plug the black cable into the COM lead and the red cable to the
V- lead.
5. Connect your resistor to cables: you should see numbers appear on the display.
6. Select the correct range:
a. Push the range button to select the highest value of the resistance to be measured.
b. If display show zero, choose a lower range button.
c. If displays shows 1 in the extreme left position, its out of range and choose a higher range
button.
d. Try out different range settings to see which one gives you the highest precision.
7. Read and record your measurements in table 1. Example: with a reading of 5.32 and range of 20k:
the final reading is 5.32 k.
B. Measure the Resistors
1. Record the color codes for each resistor.
2. Use the DMM to measure each resistor.
3. Record your measured value and range in the table.
4. When recording your values, be sure to include the proper unit: or k.
5. Calculate the minimum and maximum values in the tolerance range for the resistors and fill in the
table.
6. Determine if each resistor falls within its tolerance and put the answer (YES or NO) in the table.

Questions
1. What is the resistance value when you directly connect your probes?
2. Are all your resistors in tolerance?
3. What physical quantities can a DMM measure?
4. On a DMM, is the red lead positive or negative?
5. What is the nominal value and tolerance of a resistor with color code brown-black-red-gold?
