PLAYED 6WON 1
DRAWN 1 LOST 4
Like winning the toss and
electing to bat to a backdrop
of clear skies and people
bustling into their seats on the
first morning of anAshes Sum-
mer, before reaching 110 for
no loss at lunch, the 1st XI got
off to a similarly superb start.
Dorset House were taken
apart early on by the accuracy
of Hardakers off-spin (4-13)
before James and his slow
turning leg-breaks entered the
fray to soundly mop up the tail with astonishing figures of 4-2. A total built largely around Hardakers 43
always seemed out of reach as the season got off to the most perfect of starts. Ashes cricket and the
afternoon session.. Match two: Bishopsgate. Youre only as good as your last game are words that
silhouette every sportsman. Chasing 99 for victory, thanks largely to Hardakers 5 wicket haul at a cost
of 13 runs, back to back wins seemed very much there for the taking. However, a collapse reminiscent of
those of England teams of the 90s soon followed leaving Goschen and Hanif to cling on defiantly for a
draw, still someway behind the victory target. A great reminder to the boys that complacency is an enemy!
Against Woodcote House, having restricted our hosts to 122, James and Hardaker set about chasing
down the required runs. Perfectly poised at 58-1 to strike deep intoWoodcote hearts, all middle-order
resistance vanished as we were blown away for 71. That perfect first morning of the Ashes was now a
distant memory. James (28) and Hardaker (25) were the main contributors.A mauling against Hall Grove
soon followed, who, like an Ashes team with their tails up, played with supreme confidence and skill and
were ruthless in their approach. 179-5 played 41 all out. Cricket can be unrelenting if found on the wrong
side of a mis-match. Looking to restore pride, a much improved performance came against St.Andrews,
Pangbourne. Although losing by 6 wickets in defending 149, many more positives could be taken.
Hardaker batted with authority and composure in compiling 48 no, ably supported by both James (24) and
Morata (23). Hopton ma. chipped in with a couple of wickets to try and force a tense finish but ultimately
a few slip ups in the field contributed to a third successive defeat. That Ashes first session and the
expectant continuation had turned into a harsh reality of not quite being good enough when it counted
most.A final hurrah saw Ashdown House visit Sunningdale. Batting first, Silva (20), James (30) along with
a quick-fire 20 from the ever improving Morata saw us to 93, a total well below par. Early wickets
captured by Moratas off-spin saw hopes of a final day victory rise. However, a third wicket partnership
of 41 prior to some ferocious boundary hitting from the visiting captain, brought the game to a sudden
and extremely disappointing conclusion.
The 2014 season, although curtailed slightly by poor spells of weather, has been the steepest of learning
curves for the boys. The joy and excitement surrounding the opening day victory (that fantastic first morning
session of the Ashes Summer), set the standards and expectations for the rest of the games to follow.
There is no substitute for hard work when looking to build upon success and its even more important
to learn quickly from both winning and losing. Opportunities presented themselves for further successes
to be gained and with a little more application and desire, these could have been seized upon. The boys
and ourselves would like to thank Mr T. Dawson and Mr N. Dawson for their incredible hard work in
preparing the grounds, as well as the parents for their support throughout the season.

SCHOOL NOTES SUMMER 2014
COMMENT
"Success is liking yourself, liking what you do and
liking how you do it."
Maya Angelou, 1928 - 2014
The aim of any good school must be to equip
its pupils with the skills and attitudes to help
them get the most out of school and life in
general. We need to make sure that as they
move on from here they have learned lessons
that will stay with them through the good times
and the more difficult moments.
They must learn to be resilient; they must not
give up at the first hurdle but strive to over-
come obstacles that they may face. They must
be honest with themselves and others; realistic
about their ability and what they need to work
on. They need to have courage to try new
things and overcome their fears. They must de-
velop the self-discipline required to listen, focus
and organise themselves. They must learn to be
kind; to bear in mind the thoughts and feelings
of others. Finally, and perhaps most importantly,
they must learn to love life, to be excited about
learning and curious to discover more.
This is at the very heart of what we are all
trying to do at Sunningdale and the reason that
these pages are so full amazing achievements
and great fun.

School Trips
Form I & II visited the British Museum in London to learn about The Viking Life and the exhibition was
truly inspiring.FormVAs trip was to the National Gallery in London and FormVI went to Bath to see the
spectacular Roman Baths. Form III and IVA thoroughly enjoyed their educational and action packed trip
to the Juniper Hall Field Center, near Box Hill, Surrey to enhance their classroom understanding of river
features and processes. The location was idyllic and the boys were joined by two intrigued horses and a
foal. A superb day was had by all, even the horses! The boys had enjoyed the river trip so much they took
much of the river water in their wellington boots back to school!
Camping at Sunningdale
The boys from across all forms have enjoyed some
fantastic camping evenings on a number of Saturday
nights this Summer term on the school grounds.
Activities have included survival lessons, shelter
building, lighting fires, first aid, cooking rations,
toasting marshmallows, capture the flag, ghost
stories around the fire and more. The weather on
all evenings has been perfect for sleeping out,
however, first light at around 4.30am has not been
so welcome! Overall the camping nights have been
a real adventure.

Activities with Heathfield
This term we organised various joint activities with the girls of Heathfield School, Ascot. The staff and
pupils of Heathfield School were incredibly welcoming and we look to do more activities with Heathfield
in the future.
Concerts: The first concert was held at Sunningdale and 24 girls from Heathfield School, arrived and
joined our choir for our first ever joint performance. The programme was chosen by us and end result
was fantastic! With a short but mixed programme of pieces ranging from Richard Dering's two part motet
'Gaudent in Coelis' to a three part arrangement of Queen's 'Don't Stop Me Now', the audience loved it,
and the singers thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The same programme was performed at Heathfield School
later on in the term and this time, the audience were up on their feet and dancing to the finale.
L.F.S
Leavers Drama Day: The leavers had a really fun day at Heathfield where, together with a gaggle of
Heathfield girls, they learnt, rehearsed, and performed a version of Macbeth in under six hours! First of
all, they were taught the basics of realistic stage fighting: how to punch, block, hair pull and slap - these
skills were needed for the huge fight scene at the end.The end result was violent, passionate and with quite
a lot of slapstick humour which I'm not sure the Bard had originally intended. Everyone threw themselves
in with great gusto and it made for a very entertaining day.
A.D.V
Kwik Cricket: Kwik cricket with the Heathfield
girls was a great success with Sunningdale stealing
the honours (very ungentlemanly!) but a lot of fun
when the teams were mixed up. A sweltering day
with a delicious tea (including beautiful fairy cakes!).

Old Boys
Congratulations to Thomas McCall, Alistair Ennever and Rory McIntyre on their engagements,
to Damian Pitman, Alexander Kindersley, Lionel Steuart Fotheringham, William Fraser on
the birth of sons, to Charles Savory and Alexander Turnbull on the birth of their daughters.
Sebastien Luxemburg played international rugby for Luxemburg. Freddie Sjsostrum (Freddie
Stroma) is an actor and model who starred in Harry Potter andThe Half-Blood Prince. Rupert Oldridge
is human beatbox Bass6. Congratulations to Robert Rattray on his bronze statues of two Windsor
Greys unveiled by the Queen in March. We regret to announce the death of Simon Kerruish who became
a US citizen and specialised in Investment, we send our condolences to his widow and three daughters.
Music
Another term has passed with a massive amount
achieved in the department, and I am pleased to say
that an increasing number of boys are taking lessons
and making good progress. We have had plenty to
inspire us this term including a lovely organ recital
given by Mark James (organist at St Peter's Church,
Ealing) on May 11th. Mark entertained us with a
well chosen programme of solos which followed
on from the evening chapel service. We held this
term's Informal Concert on May 13th when we
heard pieces played and sung, and this concert gave
an opportunity for those boys taking ABRSM
exams to give a public performance before having
to play in their exam.
At the end of exams, boys from forms I and II gave
their own Informal Concert and for many of them
it was a superb chance to see how far they had
come in the past academic year. The end of term
saw the Summer Concert held in the Sports Hall
on the last Saturday. All the groups and ensembles
that meet every week gave a performance including
the school band, and a number of the Leavers
played solos of a very high standard. This was a real
highlight of the term, and an event that showed the
very high standards we are encouraging.
The end of the termalso is a time for saying 'Goodbye'
to Mr and Mrs Spencer. Mrs Spencer has coached
the choir to levels we never thought we would
reach, and the standard and volume of new music
we have learnt with her has been fantastic. Mr
Spencer has been a fabulous supporter of the choir
singing tenor when needed, and a real encouragement
to us all.We will miss them both, and pleased that
they and Sophie will be moving on to fresh
challenges in September. Also I would like to say a
big 'thank you' to our peripatetic staff, always
positive and encouraging, and their constant sup-
port makes the Music department such a positive
and welcoming place.

2nd XI Cricket
Played 5Won 1 Lost 4
This terms 2nd XI had a very unsettled season where the weather and inconsistency conspired to
unsettle us from the start. We managed only one win, against Dorset House, otherwise we struggled to
establish any form of dominance with either bat or ball in any game. We had our moments but truth is
a team made up largely of cricketers that played with big heart but limited talent was always on a sticky
wicket, forgive the pun. Allen and Neckel Captained in equal measure and there were some gutsy per-
formances from Hanif, Goschen, S Kim and De Carlos but ultimately we simply werent good enough
against the big guns on the circuit with far larger numbers from which to pool. It was nevertheless, as al-
ways, a fun season with plenty of humour and verve to carry us through no matter what our situation.
In the last match Delikatnyi dodged the ignominy of four golden ducks and that was good enough for us all!

3rd XI Cricket
A season in which the weather, illness, and the
fact that boys have been bouncing up and down
from the 2nds to the 3rds as if it was a game of
snakes and ladders has lead to difficulties. Our
core base has been a little too fluid. So, it's prob-
ably unsurprising that our victory count has
been a little low (although this is written a few
hours before our final match) and our loss tally
depressingly high. Commendations must go to
Crespi (before he was poached by the 2nds)
and Bekar, our two captains who are both ex-
cellent in the field. Markous helicoptered in for
a match and nonchalantly struck 39 not out.
Ayzenshtat, between his English and Maths CE
exams, took 3 wickets in as many overs and Seal
has kept wicket most dependably. Hopefully, our
final game has brought us our first win; if not, it
certainly hasn't been for a lack of effort or de-
sire from the boys. They've been outstanding.
Well done all!

U11B Cricket
Played 8Won 5 Lost 3
A winning season does not come along very
often, especially at Under 11 B level. The results
we achieved as a team reflect the hard work
and determination that the boys demonstrated
throughout the season both in practice and
matches. There are several individual perform-
ances that stood out, which I shall mention later,
but it was the teams ethic that deserves the
highest praise.
The best bowling figures in a match were
achieved by Marshall-Lee who gained 5 wickets
for only 2 runs. Boer and Marshall-Lee took the
most wickets in the term, 6 wickets and 7 wick-
ets respectively. Arthur scored the most runs
this term with an impressive total of 66 runs
and the top batting scores in matches were
Boam, 27 not out against Ashdown House,
Arthur, 19 against Woodcote House, and Lazaro,
18 not out against Brambletye.

U11A Cricket
Played 8Won 3 Lost 3 Drawn 2
We were missing a number of key players for our first match but
when we had a full side we were very difficult to beat. In the second
game against Woodcote, six of our first choice players were playing
for the U12s. Early on the team was dominated by Russell and
Buxton who starred with bat and ball but as the season continued,
more and more players contributed. By the end of the season
we were regularly using eight bowlers. In our last match,
three boys were on hat trick at one stage!
Buxton was the leading wicket taker and he and
Russell were a formidable opening pair. Hinchliffes
off breaks are coming along very well. Red-
dyhough bowled very straight and Efemuai
showed real pace at the end of the season.
Everybody contributed with the bat at some
stage. The leading run scorer was Russell who averaged
36, and he was closely followed by Buxton. The
highest score was made in our last match by Ker
who scored 52* and Senior ma., with his attacking
style, had the highest strike rate.
There is no doubt that this is a very talented
group of boys but what is more important is that
they have the most fantastic attitude. It has been so much fun coaching them this term.

U9A Cricket
The U9A team had a great fun season which
showed promise for the future with three good
wins towards the end of term. The weather
certainly didn't help with regards to both practice
and match experience (4 matches cancelled) but
the boys definitely spurred each other on to be
better in the field and sharper between the
wickets. We had a very satisfying revenge win
against Woodcote House and enjoyed tight victory
over Brambletye. Boscawen showed outstanding
improvement as a batsman and behind the stumps.
Hobbs developed his bowling to be much more
consistent occasionally with a little tweak to keep
the batsman guessing! We also have a few team
members who will be eligible for the same age
group next year! Well done all!

Cricket trip
On 20th June, we headed off to the Rose Bowl,
Southampton to watch a 20/20 cricket match be-
tween Hampshire and Gloucestershire. The jour-
ney took a long time but it was a fun adventure. On
the way there, we had our tea and played
games. The match was very exciting with lots of 4s
and 6s! They played music every time a boundary
was hit! Hampshire ended up winning by two runs
after a really exciting finish. There was a funny mo-
ment when a streaker ran across the field. Security
chased him but the streaker hid in the crowd and
they couldnt find him anywhere! We all had a great
night out watching and learning from the profes-
sional cricketers and we look forward to seeing
more matches next Summer.
A. Mountain (Form II)
La Vacquerie
This term Forms III and IVA have enjoyed a fantastic week at LaVacquerie. They were kept incredibly
busy with trips to significant Second World War sites such as the landing beaches and cemetaries.
Between lessons they also visited to a cider factory, a farm, several museums, and a market. A great
fun week.
Charlie and The Chocolate Factory
Following the new entry of drama onto the school timetable for
forms III and IVA, Mr Dawson and I decided that a summer
production involving all of the drama class was called for! Having
put this idea to the class, the unanimous decision was to take on
an adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Despite
having very little time in the Summer term to pull it together, the
boys worked exceedingly hard and the end result was nothing
short of pure imagination.

Festival of Song
Our Festival of Song, the House singing competition, was held on May 22nd and we were pleased
to welcome Mr Tom Foster, one of the Music staff from St Mary's School, Ascot to adjudicate. In
the solo classes Coen won the junior solo prize, Hopton ma won the senior solo prize, and in
the house song section Fox were the winners with a very polished performance of 'Let it Be'.

Sports Day
It took a great deal of nerve to press ahead with Sports Day as the heavens were opening and the Headmaster was to be seen shovelling woodchip in his suit
around the grounds. However, with the wise counsel of Mr. Spencer the brave decision was made, and what a fantastic day it turned out to be. Even after the
biblical soaking the grounds looked magnificent and huge thanks must be extended toA.J.N.D. andT.M.E.D. for making the track and fields the pride of the land.

Athletics
Undefeated U10 team and overall victories in 4 out 5 matches.
Seniors
Vs. Ludgrove lost,Vs. Hall Grove won,Vs. Bishopsgate won,Vs.Woodcote lost,Vs. St.Andrews Pangbourne won.
This was never going to be the strongest collection of senior athletes we have had, but in many ways they
performed far in excess of anyones expectations. The captain, Clegg ma, hurdled beautifully all season only
losing once at Ludgrove to the national champion. Hanif and Beckwith-Moore showed much promise and
Hatemian-Bernis was the find of the season running the 100m in imperious fashion and long jumping
wonderfully.
Juniors
Vs. Ludgrove lost,Vs. Hall Grove won,Vs. Bishopsgate won,Vs.Woodcote won,Vs. St.Andrews Pangbourne won.
Given that almost all of the team were actually a year young for this age group it is remarkable just how
successful they were. Hawkey and Hinchliffe formed a Coe and Ovett rivalry in the 800m with the
former setting a new school record of 2m43.91s. Hopton mi and Efemuai were rarely challenged in the
200m and 100m disciplines and both Boer and Marshall-Lee showed much promise.
Under 10
Vs. Ludgrove won, Vs. Hall Grove won, Vs. Bishopsgate won, Vs. Woodcote won,Vs. St. Andrews
Pangbourne won.
It was hugely pleasing that this is the second year in a row that our under 10 side have been unbeaten.
Much of their success came down to the strength in depth within the squad. Jackson ma leading from the
front with a new school record in both the 600m (1m.59.4s) and in the 200m (33.62s), he was unbeaten
in both events all season and came a very close 2nd in the district meeting. Boscawen, Field and J.Davies
were also star performers and give us much hope for the future.

Rowing
Sunningdale has made the most of
having Dorney Lake in close proximity
by adding rowing to the busy Thursday
afternoon list of activities. Those who have
signed up to this fantastic sport have all enjoyed

singles, quads and the octuple. Assisting with
the coaching has been Mr Terry Hunter (father
of the GB lightweight Olympic gold medalist,
Mark Hunter).

Fathers Match
1st XI versus Fathers XI
The 2014 crop of 1st XI players hosted the
Fathers XI in a 20/20 match. The Fathers were
inserted and set about registering an imposing
total of 121. The 1st XIs riposte was shaped
around a match-winning knock from captain,
Hardaker. Supported by Silva, Morata and Ex-
tras(!), bragging rights from this contest went
exactly where they should go, to the boys!
Great fun was had by all, with a fine cricket
match following a hearty lunch! We look for-
ward to much the same next year.

The Oratory Golf Tournament
The boys had a very nice day at the Oratory School
where we were invited to play in a golf tournament,
the weather was perfect with a lovely course. There
was some very good golf played while there was
some average golf but nevertheless everybody had
a very pleasant day. The boys who took part were
Neuhaus, Marshall-lee, Desmond, Preston Ma. and
Buxton. Buxton was awarded the best shot of the
day for a drive straight down the 4th fairway. The
golfing etiquette was very good. The boys all wrote
down their scores and the best four scores were
put forward to a grand total which was 171. The
greens were very fast and the fairways were
perfect. Buxton got the best individual score with
39. Unfortunately we all came up short in the final
prize. The boys really enjoyed themselves and had
a very nice day.
Buxton (FormVA)
Tennis
It has been a great term for the tennis team as they
have won every fixture apart fromthe first (warm-up!)
match. The squad has fed the team in its range of
sizes and age groups such that we have had 15 - 20
different boys representing the school. We won a
close match against St Andrew's, Pangbourne and
then had a good win against Woodcote House. The
fixture against Hall Grove was extremely tight
indeed and in treacherous low sun and high wind
conditions. A convincing win against Ludgrove
was followed by a triumphant 8-1 win over Wood-
cote House (U12/11) to finish.

Leavers 2014
The Leavers of 2014 have enjoyed a very busy, fun and happy timetable to end their journey at Sunningdale.Activities have included: a trip to LaVacquerie, Rowing,

Science, a trip to Brooklands Museum, a Drama Day at Heathfield, Street Dance, Camping and Survival Tips, First Aid Course, Spanish, Warhammer Battle in
Art and a day with activities at Horseshoe Lake. We wish them all the best at their next schools.
Art Exhibition
Once again I was very proud of all the boys,
their art-work looked fantastic and showed
what they are capable of. There was a wide
range of mediums from papier mache bowls
to decorative elephant heads. The boys love
to be able to showcase their work so thank
you to all of you who were able to come.
