Third Conditional: no

possibility
The first conditional and second conditionals talk about
the future. With the third conditional we talk about
the past. We talk about a condition in the past that
did not happen. That is why there is no possibility for this
condition. The third conditional is also like a dream, but
with no possibility of the dream coming true.
Last week you bought a lottery ticket. But you did not
win. :-(

Past Perfect WOULD HAVE + Past
Participle
If I had won the
lottery
I would have bought a car.
Notice that we are thinking about an impossible past
condition. You did not win the lottery. So the condition
was not true, and that particular condition can never be
true because it is finished. We use the past perfect tense
to talk about the impossible past condition. We use
WOULD HAVE + past participle to talk about the
impossible past result. The important thing about the
third conditional is that both the condition and result
areimpossible now.
Sometimes, we use should have, could have, might
have instead ofwould have, for example: If you had
bought a lottery ticket, you might have won.
Look at some more examples in the tables below:

If I had seen Mary I would have told her.
If Tara had been free
yesterday
I would have invited her.
If they had not passed

If it had rained yesterday would you have stayed at
home?
If it had rained yesterday what would you have
done?

Tercer Condicional: ninguna posibilidad

resultado de su
Past Perfect TENDRA + Participio Pasado
As

IF condicin resultado
pasado perfecto TENDRA + participio pasado

Te has quedado en casa si hubiera llovido ayer?
Qu habra hecho usted si hubiera llovido ayer?
forma segn la estructura : if + past perfect + conditional perfect. Aqu tienes algunos
ejemplos traducidos.
If clause Main clause
If + Past Perfect tense would/could/might + have + past participle
If I had won the lottery, I would have traveled around the world.

If I had won the lottery, I would have traveled around the world.
If I had seen him, I would have told him about you.
If I had known the answer, I would have raised my hand.
If she had come on Saturday, I would have seen her.
If they had left earlier, they would have arrived on time.
Si ellos hubiesen salido ms temprano, habran llegado a tiempo.
If we had studied harder, we might have passed the test.
If you had gone to Brazil, you would have had lots of fun.
Si tu hubieses ido a Brasil, habras tenido mucha diversin.
If I hadn't been so busy, I could have helped you.
Si no hubiese estado tan ocupado, te podra haber ayudado.

If you had phoned me, I would have known you were here.
Si tu me hubieses telefoneado, habra sabido que estabas aqu.
If they had invited us, we would have accepted at once.
If she had explained me the problem, I would have understood it.
If I hadn't forgotten his number, I would have phoned him.
If it hadn't rained, we would have gone fishing.
Si no hubiese llovido, habramos ido a pescar.
If my sister had been here, she would have enjoyed this.
Si mi hermana hubiese estado aqu, habra disfrutado esto.
If they hadn't drunk so much last night, they wouldn't have felt sick today.
Si no hubiesen tomado tanto anoche, no se habran sentido enfermos hoy.
If he had worked more, he could have saved more money.
Si l hubiese trabajado ms, podra haver ahorrado ms dinero.

We make the third conditional by using the past perfect after 'if' and then 'would
have' and the past participle in the second part of the sentence:
if + past perfect, ...would + have + past participle
It talks about the past. It's used to describe a situation that didn't happen, and to
imagine the result of this situation.
If she had studied, she would have passed the exam (but, really we
know she didn't study and so she didn't pass)
If I hadn't eaten so much, I wouldn't have felt sick (but I did eat a lot,
and so I did feel sick).
If we had taken a taxi, we wouldn't have missed the plane
She wouldn't have been tired if she had gone to bed earlier
She would have become a teacher if she had gone to university
He would have been on time for the interview if he had leftthe house at
nine

me senta enfermo).
Grammar The 3rd (Third) Conditional!
by MELANIE on AUGUST 17, 2010
The 3rd conditional sentence structure is also
called the past unreal conditional or past
hypothetical conditional. It is used to imagine a
different past than the one that happened.
If I hadnt eaten so much, I wouldnt have gotten* so
fat.

The if clause is unreal. It did not happen.
The result is what would have happened IF
the ifclause were real:
If I hadnt eaten so much,
Did I eat a lot? Yes, I did. However, Im imagining
what would have happened if I hadnt eaten so
much.

What would have happened if I hadnt eaten so
much? The result:
I wouldnt have gotten* so fat.
Am I fat now? Yes. I would not be fat now if hadnt
eaten so much in the past. If I ate well in the past, I
would not be fat now.
*In American English, gotten is used at the past
participle of got. In British English, gotten is not
used.
[I'm not fat in real life! I am just using this as an
example sentence!]

The 3rd conditional form:
If + past perfect, would have + past participle

NOTES:
*the past perfect tense = had + past participle
*in spoken English, subject + would AND subject +
had are usually contracted:
Id, youd, shed, hed, wed, theyd

*Because you are imagining the past, you can ONLY
use if. In this sentence structure, you cannot
use when, after, or any other time conjunction
Common uses of this sentence
structure:
1.What would you have done if ?
What would you have done if you hadnt been
accepted at any university?
What would you have done if we hadnt been there
to help?
What would you have done differently if you had
known you would never speak to him again?

2. If I had known
If I had known that you needed help, I would have
come!
If we had known you were sick, we would have
gone to visit you in the hospital.
We wouldnt have driven all this way if we had
known the museum was closed.
If I had known that you needed a ride to school, I
would have driven you.
I really wanted to see that movie! If I had known
you were going, I would have gone with you!

3. You can use this sentence structure to
express regret about something in the past, and to
wish the past had happened differently.
If we had known the movie was so awful, we
wouldnt have wasted our money on it.
If I had finished high school and gone to university,
I would have gotten a better job.

4. You can use this structure
to criticize someone/something or point out
mistakes:
If you hadnt stayed out so late last night, you
wouldnt have slept in and been late for work!
It would have been quicker if we had taken a taxi to
the park instead of walking.

Gramtica - El tercero (Tercera) Condicional!

Si yo no hubiera comido tanto, yo no habra conseguido * tan gordo.

real:

Si yo no hubiera comido tanto,

comido tanto.

Qu hubiera pasado si no hubiera comido mucho? El resultado:

... Yo no habra conseguido * tan gordo.

Soy gordo ahora?

Qu habras hecho si no hubiramos estado all para ayudar?
