2.0 INTRODUCTION
Introduction The numerical relay allows competent users to customise the
configuration of the relay. The configuration of the relay will determine
the some of the behaviour of the relay. For the Alstom P542 numerical
current differential relay, it has no exception. A standard configuration of
numerical transformer current differential relay is required to provide
easy reference in using the relay to protect a local zone of protection
(LZOP).
The P542 relay is two-terminal current differential protection relay that is
suitable to protect overhead lines and underground cables.
However, in TNB power system, the P542 relay is being accepted to be
used as the main protection for 132kV overhead lines and underground
cables.
Objectives This document is to provide the standard configuration for Alstom P542
current differential relay for the application of protecting the 132kV
overhead lines and underground cables.
Special
Notations
In any circumstances, the TNB Protection and Control Code of Practice
(COP) overrides the topics discuss in this document.
Collaboration TNB protection engineers (from the Protection Unit, Protection,
Telecommunication and Telecontrol Division, Tenaga Nasional Berhad)
collaboratively do the configuration for the Alstom P542 for the
mentioned application together Alstom (Malaysia) personnel.

Relay
Applications
In this document, the P542 will be used for the following protection
applications;
132kV overhead lines protection, with external autoreclose function,
132kV underground cables protection, with no autoreclose function,
132kV overhead lines protection, with internal autoreclose function.
Where synchronism check and autoreclose functions are required, it is
strongly recommended that the use of internal autoreclose inside P542
relay be defeated. The use of integrated synchronism check and
autoreclose functions in separate relay is recommended.

4.0 PROTECTION RELATED RELAY SETTINGS
Introduction This section will describe the fixed relay settings for P542 relay. The
other relay settings are to be calculated, evaluate and coordinated based
on the protected equipment and its surroundings. They are the
parameters that governed the behaviour of the relay.

7.0 RELAY CT AND VT CONNECTIONS
Overview This section will discuss the P542 current transformer (CT) and voltage
transformer (VT) connection to the relay. The discussion will results in
the common or standard TNB AC connections for the P542 relay.
CT
Connection
It is recommended that the CT connection for Alstom P542 relay to follow
the suggested manufacturer connections as shown in Figure 7.1.
VT
Connection
The P542 does not require any A.C voltage input connectivity, hence this
section is not relevant.
