onsumer demand for fuel
efcient cars shows no signs of
abating. According to the SMMT,
registrations for alternatively fuelled
vehicles have jumped by 51.3%, while
pure electric cars have experienced an
increase of 143.9%.
HonestJohn.co.uk is staying at the
forefront of this increase in demand, with
the launch of the Fuel Cost Calculator.
The calculator is a simple tool which
enables car buyers to compare diferent
models and trims to fnd the most
economical car for them. It is a brand new

The calculator will also factor in electric
charging point grants and battery hire,

Festival of Speed coverage increased
by 1295% compared to last year. In
the run up to the event we published
updates on what to expect from the
show as they came through. This
meant we were always publishing the
most recent up to date information.
These stories were then shared via
social media and subsequently picked
up by other sources. Referral trafc to
this section comprised of 20% of the
total page impressions.

The UK is one of the largest markets for convertibles
in Europe and the recent warm weather has seen a big
increase in page impressions, with car buyers turning
their attention to this years coolest drop tops. The
biggest winner of the summer has been the Mazda MX-5,
while the Saab 9-3, BMW Z4 and Peugeot 207CC have
also seen notable increases in trafc. This table shows the
% share of page impressions for each convertible car.

ew car sales in the UK
show no sign of abating,
with registrations rising
for the 29th consecutive month
in July. As a result, sales have
passed pre-recession levels,
with more than 1.3 million new
cars registered in the frst six
months of 2014. The increase
in registrations has taken the
Society of Motor Manufacturers
and Traders (SMMT) by surprise,
prompting it to upgrade its
market forecast for 2014 to
2.45 million registrations, up
8.1% on 2013.
Ford continues to dominate
the sales charts, with the
Fiesta continuing to hold the
number one spot with 70,007
models sold in 2014. The
Focus is the UKs second
most popular car, with 50,767
registrations, followed by the
Vauxhall Corsa (47,752) and the
Volkswagen Golf, with 43,277
cars registered.

to pre-recession levels
With one manufacturer dominating the top places
Diesel registrations have
also increased 11% in
2014 - making up 52.9% of
the market - while petrols
have seen a modest 1%
rise, accounting for 43.3%
of all sales.

appointed as the new editor
of Honest John Classics.
Keith, a well-known fgure in the
classic industry, was previously
deputy editor at Practical Classics
one of the UKs best-selling classic
car titles. He has also edited weekly
newspaper Classic Car Buyer and
monthly buying and selling bible
Classic Car Mart.
A passionate enthusiast with
several classics, his main aims for
the site are to foster a sense of
community and raise awareness
of this much-loved brand. Honest
John Classics is a fantastic site
thats frst for news and must-
read buying advice and real-world
reviews, said Keith. Ill be building
on that, as well as creating a sense
of community a place where
petrolheads can get together,
share their experiences of classic
ownership, and have fun.

his quarters most searched
for car in the classifeds was
the Ford Escort XR3i from
the early Eighties its typical of a
shift the industry is seeing towards
younger classics. Not only are
cars from the Eighties and Nineties
the most searched for on Honest
John Classics, but there are more
events being geared towards them.
Hagerty Insurance held the Festival
of the Unexceptional in July,
which aimed to celebrate a raft of
traditionally unloved cars, such as
the Austin Allegro. While this years
Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor
Show at the NEC in November will
have a dedicated area for younger
enthusiasts and their younger cars.
Its great news, and it means our
industry which is worth 4.3bn to
the UK economy is in safe hands.

aguar Land Rover has outlined
the importance of heritage to
its brand by buying the largest
privately-owned collection of British
classic cars 543 in total worth an
estimated 100m.
The collection, assembled over
many years by British enthusiast Dr
James Hull, features many signifcant
Jaguar models, including XK, SS,
C-, D- and E-types.
The acquisition underscores
Jaguar Land Rovers investment
in its history, through its newly
created Special Operations
division which includes the
Jaguar Heritage business.
A brand new Jaguar Heritage
workshop at the historic Browns
Lane, Coventry, site will maintain
the Jaguars in the collection this
new facility will also ofer Jaguar
warrantied servicing and restoration
of the companys classic models
The cars in the collection will be
actively used to support Jaguar
brand events and customer
experiences around the world and in
developing markets, creating value
for the Jaguar Land Rover business.
John Edwards, managing
director of Special Vehicle
Operations, said, Heritage is
becoming an ever more important
diferentiating factor when it comes
to experiential customer marketing
and in developing our brands in
new and emerging markets.
Jaguar and Land Rover have
a combined back catalogue of
over 140 years to draw upon and
some of the most iconic vehicles
in the industry. In addition to the
explosive growth and interest in
classic car events worldwide and
the increase in the size and value
of the market, there is a strong
brand and business rationale
underpinning this agreement.

like buses. Nothing comes
along for ages and then a
whole glut appear on the horizon.
Thats been the case in 2014 with
an unprecedented number of new
and facelifted vans arriving. Its
been good news for the Honest
John Vans which was launched
last February, giving us plenty
of new content for our users. As
ever, our van reviews form the
backbone of the site and there has
been plenty of interest among our
users in the new Vauxhall Vivaro
along with the Ford Transit Courier.
We were very impressed with
both newcomers, giving them
four and fve stars respectively.
The quality of new vans has never
been better and this is evident
in the latest oferings which take
refnement and driver comfort
to new levels. Its not just been
the big selling vans that have
piqued the enthusiasm of our
van users either. The all electric
e-NV200 Nissans alternative to
a conventional diesel-powered van
has also proved very popular.
If commercial vehicle buyers are
sceptical about electric vehicles,
its not borne out on Honest John
vans with the e-NV200 and the
e-Up Concept both fnding favour.
Alongside that the more
traditional oferings of the Renault
Trafc plus of course the big selling
Ford Transit and Ford Transit
Connect have helped Honest
John vans to grow even further.
