This document outlines the syllabus for Biology 220, a fall 2014 course taught by Professors Dave Sherwood and Meng Chen. It provides information on class meetings, instructors, teaching assistants, required texts, grading breakdown, and course schedule. The class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30-9:45 AM in Gross Hall room 103. Grades will be determined by two in-class exams, a final exam, and optional extra credit from weekly problem sets. Topics will include cells, microscopy, organelles, membranes, transport, energy, cytoskeleton, signaling, development, and plant biology.

The key takeaways are that this document outlines the syllabus for a biology course covering topics in cell biology and developmental biology. It details the instructors, textbooks, grading breakdown, lecture and discussion topics and schedule.
The course covers topics in cell biology including microscopy, organelles, membrane trafficking, cytoskeleton, and signal transduction. It also covers developmental biology topics such as embryonic development, stem cells, and plant development.
The assessment components are two in-class exams worth 25% each, a final exam worth 50%, and optional extra credit from weekly problem sets worth up to 15 points. The grading curve will be based on exam scores.

Text: Hardin, et al. Beckers World of the Cell. Eight Edition Gilbert Developmental Biology 10th Edition A mature draft (and a fairly reasonable facsimile) of the power point used for the lecture will be posted the day before each class. Final Grade:25% Test 1 (in class, 2 sides of an 8.5 x 11 crib sheet allowed, must be hand written and turned in) 25% Test 2 (in class, 2 sides of an 8.5 x 11 crib sheet allowed, must be hand written and turned in) 50% Final, 2 sides of an 8.5 x 11 crib sheet allowed, must be hand written and turned in. Extra Credit: from problem sets given out at discussion groups Make up exams for excused absences will be given at Professor Chen and Sherwoods Discretion. Page 1 of 6 Discussion Groups will be organized around problems sets that are given out each week. Questions that may arise from the lectures will also be addressed. There will be a homework problem set each week that will be given out in the discussion section. These will be turned in the following week and count for 1.5 points of extra-credit. A reasonable attempt to answer the question will be given full credit. Importantly, to receive full credit, you must attend the discussion section to pick up the homework and return it at the following discussion section. There will be 10 problem homework sets, so a possible 15 points in extra credit. The curve, which typically ranges from D to A+, will be based on the grades for each exam. Thus, you can earn an A+ without doing any of the extra credit work. After the curve is determined, extra credit points will be added and can potentially shift students from one grade to a higher grade. Date Mon. Topic Reading Discussion Tues 26 Aug.
