Literacy and Numeracy are, and will continue to be, our biggest focus areas at LPPS. Our Leadership team and teachers are committed to delivering the most up to date and best practice strategies in these two areas, and have undertaken significant professional learning to assist in this endeavor. This year, National Literacy and Numeracy week occurs from the 25 th
31 st August. It is a great opportunity to reflect upon the pivotal role parents play in their childs education. Below is an extract from the Australian Governments Literacy and Numeracy Week website with some great ideas about how you can become involved in your childs education. Did you know that what you do at home can help your kids do better at school? When parents are engaged in their childrens education take interest in what they do at school and share the importance of learning with them students tend to do better. Coupled with quality teaching, parental engagement is a key ingredient in helping students succeed, which is why they are both pillars of the Australian Governments Students First approach. Some ideas for getting engaged with your childs education are: Sharing the value of education with your children. Encouraging and supporting your children to do and learn about what they are interested in. Discuss with your children what they are learning at school and what happens in their day. Helping your children take responsibility for their study and learning. Encourage and set up good study Page 2 Thursday Thoughts Launching Place Primary School Carter Street Launching Place 3139 Telephone 5964 7783 Fax 5964 6171 Email [email protected] ABN 96 199 518 803 National Literacy and Numeracy Week and Parent Engagement habits, problem solving and research skills. Reading with your children talk about books and stories to help children develop language skills. Spending quality time together and talking about a range of topics. Challenging your children to relate these topics to what they learn at school. Encouraging a range of interests, friendships, a healthy diet and good sleep patterns. Praising your children for all their achievements whether they are big or small. It is important to remember that parents dont need to have all the answers about school work. Parents can however, have hopes for their childrens future, and these hopes can assist in creating the right environment for their children to have a positive school experience. Grade 3/4: This week we continued filming our News reports and some groups started editing. In Maths we finished looking at Area and perimeter. IN CAF we looked at connecting text to self, text to text and text to world. Grade 5/6: We finished off our 3D playgrounds and demonstrated our understanding of area and perimeter. We have continues to work on our individual CAF goals and have been busy writing lots of poetry. Well done to all the 5/6 kids who attended Hooptime!! It was a fantastic day!
School Captains Report Prep: We have learnt about the blend sh and brainstormed lots of words that start with sh. We really enjoyed writing groups where we learnt to write questions on speech bubbles and did free writing with gel pens. In Maths we looked at our school timetable and made our own visual timetable. We are getting really good at subtraction. Grade 1/2: This week in CAF reading we have looked at cause and effect and continued to explore the use of labels and diagrams in texts. We have begun our new Maths focus groups on time and in Integrated Studies were keeping a records of how many hours we sleep in a week. Page 4 Thursday Thoughts and additional costs involved at each year level that are extra excursions etc. It may interest you to know that approximately 30% of our families choose to pay the maintenance levy of $20 a year. We are looking to streamline the additional payments for excursions etc into one annual amount for each of the various levels, rather than families constantly being asked for $5 here and $7.50 there. School Council 19th August 2014 Despite not having a quorum at Tuesdays meeting, we managed to run over time with discussion on several topics. Perhaps it was the fact that, as we werent moving and seconding motions/reports etc, we let the evening flow? Anyway, thanks to all who attended, I think it yet again proved to be a valuable forum to exchange ideas. Of particular interest to the parent community would be the discussion around school maintenance funding School Council Report And while we were discussing excursion costs, Andrew Devisser explained to us the complexities of bus hiring, and the impact on costs. Fortunately for you I wont write another 20 pages on how it works, but just be grateful that we have someone like Andrew here to organize things like that!

The evening involved a scenario based around the brigades appropriate response to an internal fire in the admin block, threatening the hex building during an open night. Just to add to the challenge, we said that there were 100 people on site, but 2 were unaccounted for and a search was to be undertaken in CFA Training Exercise at School Student Work of the Week Page 5 Page 6 Thursday Thoughts Public Notices Local Art Its new!
