AE 321 Homework 7 Due in Class On November 1, 2013: Problem 1

1. The document describes four homework problems involving stress and strain analysis of materials: analyzing stress in plates under various boundary conditions, determining displacements in a beam under known stresses, using a strain gauge rosette to determine principal stresses and shear stress, and showing relationships between stiffness terms for a quasi-isotropic composite material. 2. Problem 1 involves calculating effective moduli for plates under different boundary conditions. Problem 2 requires determining displacements given beam stresses. 3. Problem 3 uses a strain gauge rosette to determine principal stresses and maximum shear stress from strain readings. Problem 4 shows stiffness terms for a quasi-isotropic composite are not independent.

Homework 7
Due in class on November 1, 2013

Problem 1.
Consider a rectangular plate of length, l, height, h, and width, t. The plate is composed of a
linearly elastic, isotropic, homogeneous material.

(A) The body is subjected to a uniform pressure over the faces at x=0 and x=l. The other faces
remain traction-free.
(B) The body is subjected to the same uniform pressure as in (A), but now the body is
constrained by frictionless contact along the rigid walls at y=0 and h=h. The faces at z=0
and z=t are traction-free.
(C) The body is subjected to the same uniform end pressure as in (A) and (B), but now all
lateral faces are constrained by frictionless contact with rigid walls so that v=w=0.

For the cases (A), (B), (C) find the effective modulus, defined as:
xx xx eff
E c o = in terms of the
elastic constants E and v.

Problem 2.

A common engineering practice is to use a strain gauge rosette (Figure b) at angles 0, 60 and
120 which is called a 60 rosette. It contains 3 folded wires (Figure a) at angles 0, 60, 120.

Then, using the transformation of coordinates equations

we obtain the plane strain tensor at the point where the 60 rosette is attached to. Using the
rosette in the figure, the following strain readings were obtained at a point of a steel part: c

. If E = 200 GPa and v = 0.3, determine:
(a) The 2D (in-plane) principal stresses and their directions.
(b) The true maximum shear stress.

Problem 4.
Consider a composite rectangular plate with evenly distributed continuous fibers along three
directions, which are 60 apart (quasi-isotropic material) as shown below.

In the x

limited number of directions.
