Reinforcing
the Horizon
The design of these two semi-detached houses is addressed
in a non-conventional way. Although the programme for
both houses is identical, the layout is not symmetrical. From
the beginning the two units were conceived as one single
project. Not only does the project answer the clients needs,
but it also ofers the possibility of being transformed into
one single house, envisaging a wider range of scenarios for
its future use. Although the house is located on a slope,
oriented to the south, with many rocky outcrops and is
called Los Peascales rocky area in Spanish the building
does not relate to them, it turns its back to its immediate

surroundings and rather interacts with the distant Pardo
forest and Madrid skyline. In my opinion, this is the key
de cision of the project, from which the rest derives. The
house somehow denies its surroundings and the abrupt to-
pography of the site by delicately leaning on the rocks with
a large horizontal plane that denes the buildings footprint.
This piano nobile, where daily life goes on, is covered by a
oor made fromwhite calcareous stone. Once this reference
level has been established, the house is organized into two
independent parts. Underneath are located the service areas
and the car parking, and above the houses living area. The
entrance to the house appears between these two diferent
worlds, via almost hidden steps, situated around a huge rock.
One single volume houses the rest of the programme. It is
a hermetic, horizontal prism related to the footprint plan in
its placement, shape and dimensions. Here is where the rest
of the programme like the bedrooms, a litle toilet and the
main bathroom is organized as well as the area destined to be
the study. Against the hillside, the almost hanging concrete
box leaves the necessary height underneath for the ground
oor to be protected from the sun while preserving the views
to the horizon. A single window placed 1.40 metres high
frames the skyline of the landscape and uniformly illuminates

Pristup projektiranju ovoga dvojnog objekta je nekonven-
cionalan. Iako je program obje kue identian, raspored nije
simetrian. Od samog su poetka te dvije jedinice zamiljene
kao jedan projekt. Projekt ne samo da odgovara na potrebe
klijenta, ve nudi i mogunost transformiranja u jednu kuu,
to predvia iri raspon scenarija upotrebe u budunosti.
Prem da je kua smjetena na kosini, okrenuta prema jugu, s
mnogo stjenovitih povrina i zove se los Peascales to na
panjolskom znai kamenjar graevina nema odnos prema
kamenjaru, ona okree lea neposrednomokoliu, a interakciju
uspostavlja s udaljenom umom Pardo i horizontom Madrida.

Miljenja sam da je to bila kljuna odluka za projekt iz koje je
izvedeno sve ostalo. Kua nekako osporava okoli i vrletnu
topograju lokacije njeno se naslanjajui na stijene velikom
horizontalnom plohom koja denira otisak graevine. Ta -
na ploha, na kojoj se odvija svakodnevni ivot, pokrivena je
podom od bijeloga vapnenakog kamena. Nakon to je
uspos tavljena ta referentna razina, kua je organizirana kao
dva samostalna dijela. Dolje su smjetene servisne prostorije i
garaa, a iznad toga boravini prostor kue. Ulaz u kuu, preko
gotovo skrivenih stuba smjetenih oko goleme stijene doima
se kao da je izmeu ta dva razliita svijeta. Ostatak programa
udomljuje tek jedan volumen. To je hermetina, horizontalna
prizma postavljena u odnos prema plohi otiska svojim
smje tajem, oblikom i dimenzijama. Ovdje se nalazi ostatak
pros torija poput spavaih soba, malenog toaleta i glavne ku-
paonice, kao i podruja namijenjena radu. Prema obronku
betonska kutija, koja gotovo da visi u zraku, ostavlja ispod
sebe dovoljno visine kako bi prizemlje titila od sunca, dok je
pogledprema horizontuouvan. Jedinstveni prozor smjeten
na visinu od 1,40 metra doputa odreeni pogled na krajolik te
jednolino osvjetljava betonski strop. Horizontalni otvor koji
se protee gotovo kroz itavu graevinu, na prvi kat uvodi
prirodno svjetlo te omoguuje da sunce ulazi dijagonalno u

the concrete ceiling. The horizontal void that runs through
almost the whole building brings natural light to the rst
oor, allowing the sun to enter the ground oor diagonally
through the central double height. The independence of the
levels is only interrupted by the double heights that bring both
spaces described previously into a relationship. The houses
tings are clustered and relate to one another in such a way
that on the ground oor the furniture is reduced to a single
element that has very diferent functions: storage, kitchen,
siting area and entrance windbreak. On the rst oor, all
the wardrobes are concentrated in a single strip atached to
the faade, improving the thermal behaviour of the building
and therefore reducing its energy consumption. This house
hosts two dwelling units, but lacks the scale of a house. It uses
the abstraction of traditional dwelling elements to mislead
the visitor and to atract his atention to the specicity of
the environment.

prostor prizemlja zbog njegove dvostruke visine u centralnom
dijelu. Neovisnost razina prekida samo dvostruka visina koja
oba prostora postavlja u meuodnos kako je prije opisano.
Predmeti su u kui smjeteni u grupama i odnose se jedni
na druge na nain da je u prizemlju namjetaj reduciran na
jedan element s razliitimfunkcijama: ostava, kuhinja, dnevni
boravak i vjetrobran na ulazu. Na prvomkatu su sve garderobe
posloene u niz koji je povezan s fasadom, to poboljava ter-
malni uinak graevine i time smanjuje potronju energije.
Kua udomljuje dvije stambene jedinice, ali joj nedostaje
mjerilo kue. Koristi apstrakciju tradicionalnih stambenih ele-
menata kako bi zavela posjetitelja i privukla mu pozornost na
specinost okolia.
