Character Word: Responsibility
We have had the best week! They are really settling in well with routines and proce-
dures. They have even learned two new math games this week!
This week was a huge success. I am already seeing such amazing growth as students
are moving from a score of 1, unable to complete the task, to a score of 3 consis-
tently able to meet the standard independently. We have been working hard to mas-
ter skills, therefore you havent seen much come home in the form of worksheets as
much of what we are doing is hands-on.
This week our math focus was on prime vs. composite numbers as well as factors and
multiples. We will continue working in this area next week. We are also focusing on
deepening our understanding of place value. Students are bringing home their multi-
plication sheets from the first 2 Fridays today. If they are unable to meet the ex-
pectation of 100 in five minutes, please encourage them to practice nightly until this
is mastered.
Weve been reading a book called Backward Bird Dog. They have worked hard to
practice the routines and procedures for Buddy reading. It takes quite the combi-
nation of patience and self-monitoring to read together and control their voice level.
MAP Data is in your childs backpack today. We will be setting interventions up for
students who are struggling in math or reading. More information will be coming home
for students needing tutoring in the coming weeks. We will work together to raise
comprehension in all areas.
We will continue working with soil next week to wrap up our standard. We are
still in need of a large zip lock baggie of clay. This could come from your
yard or from the store. We just need it for some experiments. We will be com-
paring characteristics of the types of soil as well as seeing which soil best sup-
ports plant life. We will be working on a study guide for soil on Tuesday and plan
for a small assessment on Thursday.
Three book orders are coming home today. If you would like to order, please
send a check and the order form(s) by Friday, September 12. You can also order
online at www.scholastic.com, our classroom code is: GNFLV.

Student Response:
This week I found out that my prediction is coming true because Rotten Willy
and UpChuck are becoming friends. I can tell they are building a relationship
because UpChuck is asking Willy all kinds of questions about college, and Willy
is taking the time to share with him. I think this friendship will continue to
grow. I am also wondering if something is going to happen to Tom. The book
makes me wonder this because it keeps referring to the fact that Tom and
UpChuck will be friends FOREVER I am really enjoying this book. It is funny
and the author does a good job of helping me see the story in my head. I cant
wait to find out what happens next!
