Best Tips To Crack JEE-ADVANCED/JEE-MAINS
Attention is like RAM that is superficial memory or the conscious mind that receives immediate inputs
and carries it to the brain or the unconscious mind for ultimate storage.
Improve your power of concentration
Mind is a strange embodiment of knowledge, thoughts, feelings, emotions, worries, predispositions,
beliefs, value systems and desires and this is stored in the form of data and programs in the sub
conscious. If they occupy large space in the memory general performance of the brain deteriorates.
These are very spiritual characteristics of an individual and are chief sources of drive, stimulus and
behaviour of the individual. Some of these are pre-present before birth, some are genetically inherited,
most are formed during the upbringing and many are formed or reinforced by the day to day habits
and routines. At times these are so overpowering that they force the behaviour of the individual
beyond his control or beyond the likes of the society.
Meditation-When the intensity of feelings of love, hate, lust, revulsion, anger, pride, attachment,
fear, cowardice or greed is very strong they jump to higher energy level from the sub-conscious
threshold and keep the conscious mind distracted at the crucial moment of the reading or lecture on
entirely a new subject. Mind is pre-occupied and receptivity is at its lowest. Such individuals are
generally short-tempered and they suffer from insomnia, soliloquy or restlessness. For such
individuals a stable mental state requires a practice of achieving zero thought level under the
supervision of experts. Some call it meditation; others call it Yoga, sadhna, Samadhi or dhyan.
Perhaps the mind experiences strange blissfulness and finds emancipated from the clutches of feelings
meaning Moksha or Mukti burying past sins. So much so that the individual enslaves his thoughts and
they do not rise spontaneously into the conscious mind. In the west psychologists have tried focusing
on the tip of a burning candle with limited success.
Here I am not advocating renunciation of life for meditation. I urge you to use this as an effective tool
to only improve concentration. But you must bury strong feelings within and renounce all such habits
or routines reinforcing them.
Suspense-Concentration is at its peak when the mind is in a probing state. Its receptacles are fully
activated. If you have read the topic earlier and have been unable to comprehend it completely and
doubts persist as suspense, an astute presentation not only clears the doubts but reveals more
astonishing facts to your bewilderment, the reception of the topic would be instantaneous. The
presenter may beat about the bush, builds suspense and then reveals the gist of the topic, it would be
soon digested.
Passion and Recreation- It is another effective tool to boost concentration. Some enjoy games,
movies, and eating, touring and short picnics. In exceptional situations very few recreate with the new
knowledge. This happens when an individual builds a passion i.e. an intense obsession with his
objective that he lives, eats and sleeps with the obsession. He is constantly occupied with
overpowering thoughts on the topics related to the obsession. He overworks beyond physical limits,
enjoys every bit of minute information related to his obsession and overlooks necessary daily routines.
This is a most desirable state of mind when the objective is near impossible. How to transform an
objective into passion I shall take up in my next write-up.
Conflicts-This is the biggest enemy of concentration. An individual engaged in conflicts is always
absent mentally. This is the most undesirable state of mind for any learning.
Physical factors-Concentration improves with cleanliness and healthy environment, physical
fitness and balanced nutrition. Adequate rest and sleep also boost concentration.
Short stints-With some individuals, short stints with intervals also magically improve
concentration i.e. you read the topic for 15 mints, relax for 5 mints and resume again.
