ME663 Assignment 1

1. The document outlines 5 questions regarding heat transfer for an assignment. Question 1 asks about determining if dew forms on single vs double glazed windows. Question 2 asks about calculating interface temperatures for an insulated electric wire. Question 3 asks about heat flux and interface temperature for a composite slab. Question 4 asks about deriving an expression for maximum temperature in a hollow sphere. Assignment No.01, Due on 25/08/2014

Question 1: Find if dew on window panes is avoided by having a double-glazed frame,
instead of a single glass. Assume two 4 mmglass sheets, separated by a 6mm dry-air gap,
with convective coefficient of 20W/(m
2
K) for outside air, which is at 0
o
C, and 10W/(m
2
K)
for indoor air, at 22
o
C, and 50%RH everywhere.(T
dew point
=11.10
o
C)
Question 2: A 3mm diameter and 6m long electric wire is tightly wrapped with a 2mm thick
plastic cover whose thermal conductivity is k=0.15W/mK. Electrical measurements indicate
that a current of 10 A passes through the wire and there is a voltage drop of 8V along the
wire. If the insulated wire is exposed to a medium at T
0
=27
o
C with a heat transfer coefficient
of h=12 W/m
2
K , determine the temperature at the interface of the wire and the plastic cover
in steady operation . Also determine whether doubling the thickness of plastic cover will
increase or decrease this interface temperature.
Question 3: Find the steady state heat flux through the infinite composite slab made up of
two materials as shown in Fig. 2. Also, find the interface temperature T
i
. The thermal
conductivities of two materials vary linearly with temperature in the following manner;
k
1
=0.04(1+0.0075T) W/mK, k
2
=0.05(1+0.008T) W/mK, where T is temperature in
o
C.

Question 4: Derive an expression for maximum steady state temperature in a hollow sphere
(shown in Fig.3) in which q units of heat are being generated per unit time per unit volume.
Assume inner surface is adiabatic and outer is cooled by convective heat transfer (h, T
a
).=

Question 5: The core of a nuclear reactor is made of cylindrical fuel elements, each
composed of a uranium rod of radius r
1
and a stainless steel cladding of thickness (r
2
-r
1
).
Internal energy is generated in the uranium rod according to

Where is the rate of internal energy generation per unit volume at the centreline and is a
given constant. The temperature of the coolant is held constant at T
f
, and the heat transfer
coefficient h can be assumed at be constant.
(a) Write the governing equations and boundary conditions for uranium rods and claddings
under steady-state conditions.
(b)Using the above governing equations and boundary conditions, find the temperature
distribution in the uranium rods and claddings under steady-state conditions.
