Extra Revision Questions II (Q)

1) The document discusses using trigonometric functions to model periodic real-world phenomena. It provides examples of modeling tide heights and a bouncing ball. 2) For tides in a bay, the depth d can be modeled by the equation d=Acos(2πt/P)+C, where A is the amplitude, C is the midline, and P is the period. The example gives values for maximum, minimum, and period to determine A, B, C. 3) For a bouncing ball attached to a spring, the height y over time t is modeled by the equation y=Asin(2πt/P). The example calculates the ball's initial height, maximum height

Application of Trigonometry function

The sine and cosine functions can be used to model a variety of real-world phenomena that are
periodic, that is, they repeat in predictable patterns. The key to constructing or interpreting a
trigonometry model is to understand the physical meanings of the coefficients weve explored in
the last three lessons.

the amplitude or distance the trigonometry model rises and falls above its midline

the midline or average y-value of the trigonometry model

the frequency of the trigonometry model related to the period, by the equation
, which period of the trigonometry model the minimum distance along
the x-axis for one complete cycle.

Question 1
( )
The tides in a particular bay can be modeled with an equation of the form
,
where t represents the number of hours since high-tide and d represents the depth of water in the
bay. The maximum depth of water is 36 feet, the minimum depth is 22 feet and high-tide is hit
every 12 hours.
(a)

On the axes, sketch a graph of this scenario for two full periods. Label the points on this
curve that represent high and low tide.

Tanker boats cannot be in the bay when the depth of water is less or equal to 25 feet. Set
up an inequality and solve it graphically to determine all points in time, t, on the interval
when tankers cannot be in the bay. Round all times to the nearest tenth of an
hour.

by the trigonometry equation

, where y is the height above the ground in feet

and t is the number of seconds since the ball was released.
