6.1.2 Open
Displays the File Open dialog box.
The File Open dialog box lets you open a file by typing the file name in the input box or using the
list boxes to find and open the file.
QuikEC3 can open files in two different formats. The format used depends upon the specified file
extension.
*.SEC : QuikEC3 expects its own binary format
*.* : QuikEC3 expects its own ASCII format that can be read by a word processor
See File|SaveAs
6.1.3 Save
Saves the active file to disk.
If the file has a default name (such as NoName00), the program opens the File|SaveAs dialog
box so you can rename the file and save it to a different directory or drive.
If you use an existing file name, the program asks if you want to overwrite the existing file.
6.1.4 Save As
Opens up the FileISave As dialog box, where you can save the sections file under a different
name, or to a different directory or drive.
You can enter a new name, including the drive and directory. If you choose an existing file name,
the program asks if you want to overwrite the existing file.

6.1.5 Save As ASCII Text
This option is available only when the Properties tab is selected.
This option saves the properties for the selected section shape in a file that is suitable for loading
into and printing from a word processor.
When selected the option displays the standard windows Save form, the default location for the file
is your desktop. QuikEC3 will also set a default file name. To save the file on your desktop click
Save.
The file can then be opened using a word processor and printed.
Opening and printing using Windows Notepad:
Move to your desktop, and double click on the file. It will open in Notepad. Make sure that a mono-
space font is selected (Courier New works well), select File|Page setup. Change the paper
orientation to landscape and reduce the margins to the minimum permitted by your printer. Perform
a test print. Adjust the font size if necessary.
6.1.6 Properties
The Section file properties form is displayed.
The form displays the sections file type, file version, description, author and organisation as well as
a single 'Read only' check box. This information is stored in the sections file along with the
sections.
Read only
When checked, the sections file can not be changed. To prevent mistakes, the
standardsectionsfiles delivered with QuikEC3 all have Read only set.
Description
If you create your own sections file, you may use this entry to describe the sections included.
Author
If you created the sections file, enter your name.
Organisation
If you created the sections file, enter your firms name.
6.1.7 Export
Use this option to make custom sections available to other Quiksoft programs.

See: Sectionfilelocations
Note that some Quiksoft programs use different section file formats and versions. The File|Export
option will perform the necessary conversions.
6.1.8 Print
Prints the calculations under the selected tab.
By default, QuikEC3 prints its own headings on blank paper, however because of the nature of
QuikEC3, you may wish to print on your own pre-printed sheets.
See: File|Papersetup
6.1.9 Print setup
Displays the Print Setup form where you select a printer. If you do not want to make any changes
to your printer configuration, you do not need to use Print setup.
With the Select Printer form, you can select any of the printers listed. If you want to set options
specific to your printer, click on the dialog's Properties button.
6.1.10 Paper setup
Displays the Paper setup form. The form has three tabs:
Paper tab
Select the paper tab to set the size of the paper that you use for printed output.
Margins tab
The printed results have a border around the edge. The size of the border can be changed using
this option.
You may have to increase the margins, if your printer misses the top or bottom of the printout. The
Hewlett Packard DeskJets and Cannon Bubble Jets suffer this problem. Setting the margins will
require some trial and error. Click on the binding tab first and set the binding margin to None (See
40
18
19 Menu Commands
2006 - 2012 P. A. Bennett BSc.(Hons.) all rights reserved.
Binding tab below), select Results, and print just one page. You will see if the border is clipped and
be able to enter larger margins.
Binding tab
User can choose to have a binding margin on the left or at the top of the paper.
Headings
Use this option to print on either:
Blank paper, in which case QuikEC3 will print its own headings (Quiksoft classic).
Pre-printed calculation sheets, in which case QuikEC3 will not print any borders or headings
(No headings). So that the text is properly aligned under your headings, enter the two
dimensions indicated in the diagram.
6.1.11 Addresses
Edit, or select an alternate address for the headings in the printed output.
You may maintain up to six different names and addresses. You can page through the different
addresses by clicking on their Tabs. To select an address for the printed output, select its Tab,
then click its Make current check box.
The program will use the first six lines of the address. You should not enter more than six lines.
Addresses can be copied and pasted between Tabs:
Select an address or part of an address by striping with the mouse. Use the right hand mouse
button to access a pop-up cut, copy, paste menu.
6.1.12 Settings
The Settings menu is available on the File menu.
There are two options available:
File|Settings|Load
File|Settings|Store
6.1.12.1 Load
Displays the 'Load program settings' form.
Use the form to load previously stored QuikEC3 settings.

6.1.13.1 Change
Use this option to view, create or change a National annex.
Each country adopting Eurocode has produced it's own National annex. The National annex's
contain values and rules that override the Eurocode 'Box' values and rules.
In a simple world the National annexes would contain only different factors that could be read from
a file, one file for each country. However many have introduced changes that require modification
of program source code.
The solution adopted by QuikEC3 is to maintain a set of National annexes that it 'knows', you may
then create new annexes based on these but supply different values and settings.

7.6 Strut page
This page performs calculations for strut buckling.
The program requires three inputs:
L
cry
- an effective length (m.) for major axis buckling.
L
crz
- an effective length (m.) for minor axis buckling.
L
crt
- an effective length (m.) for torsional and torsional-flexural buckling.
If a member is fully restrained, the simplest solution is to enter a very short effective length. The
program prevents the entry of zero since this leads to infinite values for N
cr
.
The inputs and calculations in this page are also used in the Combinedbuckling and
Calculationspage .
7.7 Beam LT page
This page performs calculations for lateral torsional buckling.
The page requires three inputs:
M

L - An effective length (m.) for lateral torsional buckling.
M
Ed
- The largest major axis moment along the length of member being considered.
Using BS5950 it is normal to account for the affects of the shape of the bending moment diagram
using an m
LT
factor. In Eurocode this and other parameters are covered within the calculations for
M
cr
. It is therefore essential that the M
cr
button is used.
The value of cLT calculated in this form is also used in the Combinedbuckling and
Calculationspage . If the beam is fully restrained against lateral torsional buckling the simplest
solution is to enter a very small value for L.
7.8 Combined buckling page
This page covers combined buckling.
Within EN 1993-1-1:2005, combined buckling is covered by two fairly familiar interaction equations.
However those terms concerned with moment have factors kyy, kyz, kzy, kzz applied.
It's in the calculation of these factors where the complications arise.
QuikEC3 deals with the calculation of these factors within its Interaction factors Wizard accessed
by clicking on the button.

sections. Sections can be exported for use with Quikframe XP, Quikframe XP Steel designer,
Quikbeam, Quikport and Quikjoint.
QuikEC3
QuikEC3 is a Eurocode version of Merlin with additional emphasis on helping the engineer
understand the new methods and nomenclature of Eurocode.
8.2 Section orientation
Note:
When designing using non-symmetrical sections, the section orientation may effect section
classification and capacities.
Where a section has Y axis moment, QuikEC3 assumes the top of the section to be in
compression.
For Z axis moment the right hand side is assumed to be in compression.
For clarification carry out the following:
Select a channel section, select the 'Class' tab, enter zero for its axial load and look at it's
Classification - Z axis bending. If you change its orientation by clicking on the section diagram
you will see either Flange toes in compression or Web in compression.
Next change the section to a 203x203x60SFB in S275. When the plate is in tension the section is
Class 1. When the plate is in compression the section is Class 4 (Slender).

8.4 Section file locations
The Quiksoft programs are supplied with a comprehensive set of standard sections tables. These
tables are installed on your computer by the Quiksoft setup program in the same location as the
program files.
Until the advent of the Microsoft Vista operating system QuikEC3's File|Export function would work
directly on the installed Quiksoft application's program folder. However under Vista and Windows 7
(and XP when running as a standard user) access to the program folder is restricted to read only.
This is to prevent unauthorised users, or rogue programs from tampering with installed programs.
Generally this is a good thing.
The Quiksoft programs are now modified as follows:
The location of the standard sections files installed by the Quiksoft Setup program remains the
program folder, typically: c:\program files\quiksoft\quikport\brit.sec
Additional files exported by QuikEC3 are stored in the location <Quiksoft project
folder>\quiksoft data\quikport\NewFile.sec. Each user will therefore have his own location and
his own set of custom files.
QuikEC3's File|Export form contains a new option:
Generally when you export sections you will select the first option (current user only). Any files you
export will be available only to the current user. This can be considered a good thing since it is
impossible for other users to disturb your program installation. And visa versa!
The second option should be used with care. Any files exported would be available to all users of
the selected Quiksoft programs. It would therefore be possible for a user to disturb another user's
sections files. To select the second option the program must be running with administrator
privileges. Under Vista, Windows 7 and 'XP restricted user' this will require QuikEC3 to be re-
started.
QuikEC3 will automatically guide you through how to do this.
8.5 Creating new custom sections
The standardsection files supplied with QuikEC3 are ReadOnly and should not be changed.
New sections should be placed either in a newfile , or within the file Custom.sec supplied with
QuikEC3.
A custom section may be: totally new (plate girder); based on an existing steel size (UB with
reduced flange width); or built up from other sections (gantry girder, or plated beam).

8.9 Calculation Methods
Calculations
In the calculations for capacity, lateral torsional buckling, strut action, combined axial and bending,
the program uses the formulae and methods of EN 1993-1-1:2005 Incorporating Corrigenda
February 2006 and April 2009. For calculation of effective section properties for class 4 sections
reference is made to EN 1993-1-5:2006.
Section properties
When calculating section properties, QuikEC3 fully accounts for all flange tapers and fillet radii.
In the calculations for Area, Inertia, Elastic, and Plastic Modulus the program uses a specialist
method of numeric integration.
Warping constant I
w
is taken from the Steel Construction Institutes guide: Design of Members
Subject to Combined Bending and Torsion.
The Torsion Constant I
t
is taken from: JOHNSTON, B.G. and EL DARWISH, I.A., Torsion of
structural shapes. Proceedings of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Journal of the Structural
Division, Vol. 91, No. ST1, pp 203-228, February 1965.
For the lateral torsional buckling of non-symmetrical sections the value for zj (factor for vertical
assymmetry) is obtained using a numerical integration method. For more detail see: Specification
for Load and Resistance Factor Design of Single-Angle Members available from the American
Institute of Steel Construction, Inc.

8.12 Elastic critical moment for lateral torsional buckling
Clicking on the Mcr button on the BeamLTpage displays the Elastic critical moment for lateral
torsional buckling form.
This form covers the calculation of M
cr
(Elastic critical moment for lateral torsional buckling). EN-
1993-1-1:2005 does not give guidance as to how this should be calculated, but several methods
exist.
The methods used here are described on the Access Steel web site and are available for
download as pdf files.
For doubly symmetrical sections:
NCCI:Elasticcriticalmomentforlateraltorsionalbuckling.SN003a-EN-EU
For mono-symmetrical sections:

2006 - 2012 P. A. Bennett BSc.(Hons.) all rights reserved.
NCCI:Mono-symmetricaluniformmembersunderbendingandaxialcompression.SN030a-EN-
EU
The form requires values for C1, C2 and C3 which should be obtained from these guides. Not all
factors are required for all section and moment diagram shapes.
Kz and Kw are usually taken as unity. See Access Steel guides.
On clicking OK the new calculated value for Mcr will be used in the lateral-torsional buckling
calculations.
8.13 Interaction factors Wizard
This Wizard gathers the information necessary to calculate the Interaction factors based on either
of the methods outlined in EN 1993-1-1:2005 Annex A or B.
The Wizard works by guiding the user through each process step by step. Move to the next step by
clicking on the Next > button. You may return to the previous form by clicking < Back.
On the first page select a method.
Method 1 - Annex A is a method based upon second-order in-plane elastic stability theory.
Method 2 - Annex B is a simpler method based upon calibrations with numerical simulation.
