This pattern is written for a worsted weight cotton yarn; however, it was also tested in a DK weight yarn on size US 5 needles. Please take the following measurements and knit according to them for a perfect, customized fit!
*Measure the length from your armpit to an inch or two below the crease in your elbow. This will be your sleeve length.
*Measure from the center of your armpit, around your back to the center of your other armpit. The amount of inches you come up with will be the amount you knit for the back of your shrug.
Even though the rows for the sleeves are counted, I encourage you to try the sleeve on from time to time to make sure it fits you. Depending on your yarn, needle size and gauge you may need to knit more or less rows then stated. I wanted my sleeves to cover my elbow. Approximately 3-5 of the sleeve can be completed before the increase.

4 Hood: Starting at each sleeve, count your slipped stitches inward and mark the middle stitch. From the middle st, count outward 18 sts on one side (place marker), 17 sts on the other side (place marker). Including the middle st, you will have a total of 36 sts between the markers. With the right side facing, pick up the 36 sts on the 16" circular needles. Row 1 - *Purl 1, Make 1 repeat from * 71 sts total. <<<Slip the first stitch of all following rows>>> Row 2 - Knit 71 sts total. Next Row - Purl Next Row - Knit Next Row - Purl Sl1, K13, M1, *K14, M1 repeat from * for a total of 6 increases. 95 sts total. Continue in Stockinette Stitch until the hood measures 15" long. Knit your last row. 3 Needle Bind Off: With the right sides together, split the stitches in half on your circular needle - 47 sts on one side, 48 sts on the other. With 1 DPN, use the 3 needle bind off method until you have 6 sts left. Cut a tail of about 6" and thread onto a yarn needle. As if you were finishing a hat, sew the tail through the 6 remaining sts twice and pull tightly to close the circle. Pass the tail through to the wrong side of the hood and weave in the end. Follow the Ribbed Border directions from here to finish your shrug.
5 Ribbed Border (no hood): Starting under the decreases of the left sleeve, skip one st and start picking up the slipped sts. When you reach the right sleeve, pick up 2 of the decreases by putting the needle beneath the 2 nd bar, yo 3 times and pull through. Continue picking up sts until you get to the left sleeve. Pick up 2 decreases (underneath the 2 nd bar), yo 3 times and pull through. Pick up the last st (the one you skipped in the beginning), PM and join in the round. Increase every st by knitting one in the front and back. Treat the 3 yos in the sleeve as 1 st. If you pick up the 3 yos with a sewing/yarn needle first, it is a bit easier to get the knitting needle into it. Knit in the front and back as if they were 1 st. Knit in 1x1 ribbing for one inch. Bind off using your favorite stretchy method.
