Grade 6 Syllabus

I. COURSE TITLE: COMPUTER LITERACY GRADE 6

II. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course provides students with a solid introduction to basic computer skills and tools, use of
proper social behaviors when using technology, and how to access and conduct research using a
computer. The skills are consistent with the goals of the New J ersey Computer and Information
Literacy standards.

Students will demonstrate effective input of text and data and then create documents with
advanced text formatting. They will use appropriate computer vocabulary, common features of
an operating system, and use network resources for retrieving data. They will practice and
describe safe Internet usage. Students will create a simple spreadsheet, work with formulas and
produce basic graphs. They will design and produce a basic multimedia project.
Students will be motivated by the course material which will be based on applications useful in
school. Course material will be varied and substantial.

III. COURSE CONTENT OUTLINE
A. Use of common operating system and network
1. Create and save files to various drives
2. Organize files and create folders on various drives
3. Use appropriate technology vocabulary
4. Identify basic computer problems
5. Demonstrate the ability to solve simple hardware or software problems
6. Demonstrate the knowledge of what type of storage device is most useful for
different size files

B. Keyboarding
1. Learn the home row position
2. Practice finding and using keys such as shift, backspace, forward and back
slashes, enter and Ctrl
3. Develop speed and accuracy on the QWERTY keyboard

C. Word processing
1. Create and type in a new document
2. Correct errors, use undo and redo, use check spelling
3. Save a document to various drives, and close document to exit word processing
program
4. Position and move the insertion point
5. Preview and print a document
6. Select fonts, change font size, and apply font styles, and underlines
7. Apply font colors
8. Use Cut and paste, use copy and paste
9. Change line and paragraph spacing
10. Move text and paragraphs
11. Insert columns

D. Spreadsheet
1. Use spreadsheet programs menus and toolbars
2. Use mouse and keyboard to explore a spreadsheet
3. Create a new blank workbook, and switch between workbooks
4. Enter labels in a workbook
5. Enter numeric labels and values
6. Correct simple errors, use Undo and Redo
7. Save and close a workbook, recover a workbook file
8. Adjust column width
9. Enter simple formulas (SUM, AVERAGE)
10. Create a basic chart
11. Change chart type
12. Resize and delete chart

E. Multimedia Presentation
1. Start and save a presentation
2. Insert additional slides
3. Select and align text
4. Change text appearance and case
5. Change slide color scheme and formatting
6. Insert and format bullets
7. Add slide transitions
8. Animate text and objects
9. Create custom animations
10. Use slide design templates

F. Information Access and Research
1. Student will describe and practice safe Internet usage and the purpose of an AUP
2. Student will evaluate the accuracy of electronic information resources
3. Students will describe and identify search engines
4. Students will describe a directory and how it works
5. Students will demonstrate how to plan, execute, and refine an effective search
strategy

IV. STUDENT ACTIVITIES
Students will be involved using and applying a wide variety of computer software skills as
they complete basic tasks. Students will use a current keyboarding program to hone their
typing skills. They will write simple papers, create charts and graphs, and build presentations
that will correlate to what will be required of them in other classes in middle school and
beyond. Effective searching of the Internet will be introduced and practiced. Learning will
engage students intellectually, visually, and creatively. Individual work, small group and class
work will provide students the opportunity to share their special knowledge of how the
various technologies work best. Technology skills will be integrated with other subjects.

V. EVALUATION OF STUDENT LEARNING
Assessment is a way of measuring what students know and defining what is important for
students to learn. It is an integral part of the learning process and occurs throughout
instruction. A variety of alternative assessment methods are used for student evaluation.
Evaluation may include, but is not limited, to the following:
Teacher observation of student performance
Teacher and publisher generated tests and quizzes
Homework
Class participation
Projects
Demonstrations
Presentations
Explorations
Reports
Comprehensive tests
