NETWORKING COMPONENTS

Leased Line

Leased lines are dedicated digital circuit connectivity between two locations.
Leased Line circuit for DOP network is provided by BSNL.
Two Kinds of Leased Lines

Managed Leased Line (MLLN) Network Modem will be provided by BSNL.

Conventional Leased Line (CLLN), Network Modem will be provided by the
customer.

Benefits of Leased Lines

 Cost effective
 High speed data throughput
 Private point-to-point connection,
 Fixed charges regardless of usage
 A guaranteed high level of service with vastly reduced latency and jitter

EQUIPMENT AT POST OFFICE

ROUTER: - A router is a device that routes/forwards data packets between the

networks.

SWITCH: - A network switch is a small hardware device that joins multiple

computers together within one local Area Network.

MODEM: - Modem is a equipment for transmit / receive the data

RACK: - Rack is used to keep network equipment like router, switch and modems.

ROUTER INDICATIONS FOR TROUBLE SHOOTING

Front Panel Indications

System Power LED and System Activity LED should be glowing green continuously. If system
activity LED is blinking, reconnect the serial cable between modem and router. If system
power LED is off, connect the power cable.

Back panel Indications

Fast Ethernet port LED should be glowing green. If it is off, reconnect the cable from
switch to router. Serial port LED should be glowing green otherwise check the serial cable
connection between modem to router.
SWITCH-WS-C2960

LAN Port Up Link Port

LAN Ports: Where machines / Server are connected on the Switch

Up Link Ports: Where the Router cable is connected.

SWITCH INDICATIONS FOR TROUBLE SHOOTING

 Switch system power LED should be glowing green otherwise check the power
cable.

 The port LEDs should also be glowing green otherwise check the LAN cable
connected to the switch.

 Uplink port is the port where the Ethernet cable is connected to Router. If switch is
to be connected to another switch you should use Crossover Cable. This port should
be glowing green.

CHECK THE STATUS OF ROUTER ETHERNET AND SWITCH PORT

 To check the router Ethernet Port goes to back panel of router and see the cable
which is shown below (Connectivity between Switch and Router). If the
connectivity is okay you will find green LED blinking.

 If the Green LED is not blinking on both the sides (Switch and Router). Then
reconnect the cable on both the sides. If the status is same then replace the cable.
GUIDELINES TO INTEGRATE LAN AT DOP OFFICES TO WAN

1. Change the IP Address of Local office Server/ Client as per IP segment allotted
to post office.

2. IP configuration for the server and all clients:

a. Go to My network places properties.
b. Select LAN Connection and go to its properties.
c. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and go to its properties.
d. Change the TCP/IP Properties like IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default
Gateway, Preferred DNS server, and Alternate DNS server as per following :

IP address * Select IP address from allocated range of IP address

given by engineer /detailed on site
Subnet Mask As indicated IndiaPostNet web portal
Default gateway Same as Router IP address as indicated on
IndiaPostNet web portal
Preferred DNS 164.100.17.3
Alternate DNS 164.100.3.1

* IP address is available at IndiaPostNet (http://www.indiapost.gov.in/postnet/)

Report –> IP Address Details –> State / Circle (AP Circle)–> All Districts / All
Regions –> All POs –>Click on Lookup.

3. Existing switch / hub at post offices should be connected with switch supplied by
NIC through cross cable / patch cord.

OBTAINING YOUR IP ADDRESS DETAILS

User name

Password
IP address is available at India Post Net (http://www.indiapost.gov.in/postnet/)
where you can login with your Circle Office User Name and password. After login the
following screen is displayed:

Click on Reports → IP address details, select your State / District and post office then
press Lookup. The table will show you your router IP ,Switch IP , IP Range and Mask For
the future reference , please keep a record of these because if your network goes down
these IPs will be required for troubleshooting.
