Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Members and Friends of the
Hill United Presbyterian
Church:
In a recent article written by Gordon
Brown, Prime Minister of Britain from 2007 to
2010 and now a U.N. Special Envoy for
global education, he wrote about mobilizing
for girls rights and the fact that getting girls
into school is the global civil rights issue of
our time.
I quote Gordon Brown:
What have been, until now, relatively
isolated local organizations, such as Nigerias
Bring Back Our Girls campaign, are linking
together across continents. They are
converging around basic demands,
originating from girls themselves, for an end
to child labor, child marriage, child trafficking,
genital mutilation, sex discrimination and
other exploitive and abusive practices. In
their place, they are demanding
acknowledgement of a universal right to
education.
I am extremely proud that we here at Hill
Church are on the cutting edge of a major
issue of our time from a Christian basis and
perspective.
We are currently helping FORTY young
women from our Ghana Mission Partnership
with scholarships to go to higher education.
These young women, from the five
Churches of the Bubiashie District in Accra,
Ghana range in age from 14 through 27,
some attending secondary school, some
attending college or training institutes with
others attending Graduate and Professional
Universities.
I thank God that we are supporting this
wonderful mission, ministry and partnership.
Thank you for your support!
Yours in the Love of God
Who gives us the minds to be educated,
Pastor Clark

GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE REPORT

Here is another letter from a Ghanaian student. They are very appreciative of our
contributions and they have high hopes. Thank you for your caring and keep in mind that
all contributions should be turned in by August 25
th
.

This scholarship beneficiary, who is affiliated with the Bubiashie congregation, is a first year
student at St. Stephens Presbyterian High School and writes:
Dear in Christ,
I greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus the Christ, Amen. It is my greatest joy to be one of the lucky students
who benefitted from your scholarship scheme of the girl child. More grease to your elbows; may the good
Lord strengthen you, give you long life and prosperity to enable you to do more. I promise to utilize it well in
order that in the near future I shall also be part of your donation team. Once again may the good Lord
reward you a thousand fold. God bless you all,
Yours in His service,
Agnes D. Agbebo

On Tuesday, July 1st, our task force joyfully connected via Skype with the Bubiashie District Scholarship
Committee. (thanks to Nancy Slezak for setting up the connection)

We welcomed and greeted each other and were able to put faces with names. Bernard Daddy is a banker and
travels all across Africa. Daniel Dzunu was recently named Catechist at Odorkor and had spent his career in
the Youth for Christ movement since 1977. Joseph Afenya has been Catechist at Bubiashie for many years
and his granddaughter, Emelia, is one of the scholarship students. Catherine Hodasi is an attorney, but not in
private practice. She works on government matters.

We learned that the District now only contains three churches, Bubiashie(450 members), Odorkor, and
Darkuman-Bethel. Scholarship students in the other two churches will continue in the program until they are
finished with their education. The school year runs from early September through early August with a four
week break in August and a two week break around Christmas. The year consists of three terms. The
approximate cost per term for high school is about $150. (we only provide enough funds for one term)

We were shown the inside of the Bubiashie Church building. It rises to about five stories at the peak. It has
incurred no debt in the construction process of the past nine years.

Please keep the Bubiashie District churches, Bernard Daddy, chairperson of the Bubiashie Scholarship
Committee, as well as the students in your prayers.

Beginning Sunday, August 3rd, the church stage (in the Fellowship Hall) will become home to
items that the church no longer needs. All items will be available to any interested party for a
small donation. Donations will be accepted for the goods on August 3rd, 10th, and 17th during
Fellowship Hour. If you have any questions, contact Pete McElhaney at 724-282-3509. Stop by
and see if you can find your treasure!
The Garden Club needs your HELP! We will be meeting on Saturday, August 2nd at
8:00 a.m. to tackle some of the bigger projects. We need strong workers to help
remove a tree and trim remaining trees and hedges. There will also be some top
soil to spread and grass seed to plant. This is a B.Y.O.T. event so Bring Your Own
Tools if you have them! Helpful tools would include: wheelbarrow, hedge
clippers/trimmers, lawn and garden rakes. Mark your tools before you come so
they dont accidentally go to another home! If you have any questions, contact
Pete McElhaney at 724-282-3509.
All ladies of all ages are invited
to the Fall Luncheon and
Program to be held in the
Fellowship Hall on October 18th
at noon. Our program will be The Dancing
Dogs. More information will be included in
future newsletters and Sunday bulletins.
