Ancon designs and manufactures high integrity steel products for
the construction industry. Through continuous programmes of
new product development, inward investment and employee
advancement, the company is committed to maintaining the
highest level of customer service within a dynamic and
challenging industry.
R einforced concrete is an im portant
construction m aterial. It offers strength,
durability and can be form ed into a variety of
shapes. C oncrete structures are designed w ith
expansion and contraction joints at appropriate
places to allow m ovem ent to take place. The
design of the joint is im portant for the overall
design to function correctly.
Ancon shear load connectors offer significant
advantages over conventional single dow els.

In m ost cases conventional dow elled or
corbelled joints can be replaced by joints
incorporating Ancon shear connectors. These
are m ore effective at transferring load and
allow ing m ovem ent to take place, easier to fix
on site and a far m ore cost effective solution.
They can be used for m ovem ent joints in floor
slabs, suspended slabs, and for replacing
double colum ns and beam s at structural
m ovem ent joints. Applications in civil
engineering include joints in bridge parapets,
bridge abutm ents and diaphragm w all
construction.

ANCON SHEAR LOAD CONNECTORS
The Ancon range of shear load connectors
provides solutions for a w ide range of
applications, loads, slab depths and joint
thicknesses.
Each connector is a tw o-part assem bly
com prising a sleeve and a dow el com ponent.
The sleeve is nailed to the form w ork ensuring
subsequent alignm ent w ith the dow el. This
alignm ent is essential for effective m ovem ent.
The com plete installation procedure is show n
on page 8.
Ancon shear load connectors are
m anufactured from stainless steel to ensure a
high degree of corrosion resistance w ith no
requirem ent for additional protection.
In addition, Ancon D SD /Q and ESD /Q
connectors can be provided w ith 90 m inutes
fire protection. Special sleeves, m anufactured
from a fire barrier m aterial, replace the
com pressible filler at the connectors position in
the joint. This m aterial foam s and expands
during a fire to protect the connector (page 18).
Ancon DSD Shear Connectors
The Ancon D SD is the original tw o-part,
double dow el, shear load connector. The
dow el com ponent can m ove longitudinally
w ithin the sleeve to accom m odate m ovem ent.
The connector is available in ten standard
sizes and can transfer loads from around 20kN
to over 450kN . The larger connectors can be
used in joints up to 60m m w ide. Larger joints
can be accom m odated using special dow els.
Please contact Ancons Technical D epartm ent
for further inform ation.
Ancon DSDQ Shear Connectors
The Ancon D SD Q shear load connector
uses the sam e dow el com ponent as the
Ancon D SD , but the cylindrical sleeve is
contained w ithin a rectangular box section to
allow lateral m ovem ent in addition to the
longitudinal m ovem ent. N ine standard sizes
can be used to transfer loads from around
30kN to over 450kN .

Structural Movement J oints in Frames
A com m on requirem ent in fram ed buildings is
a structural m ovem ent joint to isolate one part
ofthe building from another. Traditional practice
is to provide a line of double colum ns. The use
of Ancon shear connectors reduces costs,
speeds construction and increases floor area.
Suspended Floor Slabs
In suspended slabs, connectors should be
placed at points of contraflecture w here there
is little or no bending m om ent and m axim um
shear force.
Beam to Wall or Slab Connections
C orbel and half lap joints are a problem to
design and difficult and expensive to
construct. The use of Ancon D SD shear
connectors sim plifies design and construction,
producing a better detail.
There are m any applications for Ancon shear
connectors in all types of construction using
reinforced concrete in both building and civil
engineering contracts.
BUILDING APPLICATIONS
Ground Floor Slabs
M ovem ent joints are usually required to divide
a reinforced concrete ground slab into bays.
Ancon D SD shear connectors are used to
transfer shear load from slab to slab and to
prevent differential settlem ent. W here adjoining
bays are different sizes, m ovem ent in tw o
directions w ill occur, Ancon D SD Q shear
connectors should be used in this situation.

CIVIL ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS
Movement J oints in Carriageways
Ancon D SD shear connectors are used in
carriagew ay joints to transfer high shear loads
caused by traffic loading and for elim inating
differential settlem ent.
Bridge Abutments
Ancon D SD shear connectors are used
vertically at bridge abutm ents to fix the bridge
deck to the abutm ent. In addition to ease of
installation, the use of Ancon D SD shear
connectors allow s for the bridge deck to be
jacked up for bearings to be replaced.
J oints in Parapets
The use of Ancon shear connectors in the
vertical joints in parapets is a sim ple and cost
effective w ay of connecting the sections.
The Ancon D SD Q facilitates significant rotation
at the joint w ithout reducing the horizontal
shear capacity.
Diaphragm Wall/Slab Connections
C onnecting road slabs to diaphragm w alls can
be a difficult and expensive operation. Form ing
recesses, or using post fixed dow els into site
drilled holes presents m any problem s on site.
Ancon D SD shear connectors provide a cost
effective solution. The sleeve com ponents are
nailed to plyw ood form w ork w hich is rigidly fixed
to the reinforcem ent cage. After excavation the
plyw ood is rem oved to reveal the faces of the
sleeves. The dow el com ponents can now be
inserted ready to support the slab.
Contiguous Piled Wall/Slab Connections
Sim ilar in application to diaphragm w all
construction, Ancon D SD shear connectors are
used to transfer shear load from slab to pile.

The concrete m ust be able to sustain the load
transferred by the Ancon dow els w hen the
shuttering is struck. The follow ing table m ay be
used to estim ate the num ber of days after
w hich supporting form w ork could be rem oved.
For exam ple, if the self w eight of a suspended
slab represents one half of its total design
load, enter the Table w ith a factor of 0.5. From
this it can be seen that G rade 15 concrete
w ould attain enough strength in 28 days to
support the self w eight of the slab. The
strength/tim e relationship of G rade 30
concrete w ill show the num ber of days needed
to achieve a strength of 15M Pa (typically less
than seven). The supporting form w ork could
therefore be safely rem oved after that num ber
of days. A qualified structural engineer should
advise.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE
INSTALLATION OF ANCON SHEAR
LOAD CONNECTORS
The tw o part design of all Ancon shear
connectors rem oves the need for drilling
form w ork on site, supporting dow el bars and
fitting debonding sleeves and end caps. The
installation is a fast and accurate process.
Fix the local reinforcem ent in position around
the sleeve com ponent together w ith any other
reinforcem ent that is required, ensuring that
the correct cover to the reinforcem ent is
m aintained. Pour the concrete to com plete the
installation of the sleeve com ponent.
Position the com pressible joint filler of the
appropriate w idth for applications w here
m ovem ent is expected betw een the tw o
sections of concrete.
Push the dow el com ponent through the joint
filler (if applicable) until it is fully located in the
sleeve com ponent. It m ay be necessary to tap
the dow el com ponent to overcom e the dim ple
in the sleeve w hich pinch holds the dow el in
the sleeve and prevents dislocation w hen the
concrete is vibrated.
4 5
W hen the concrete has achieved sufficient
strength, strike the shuttering. Peel off or
puncture the Ancon label to reveal the holes for
the dow els. W here Ancon D SD Q or ESD Q are
being used, the label should only be punctured
enough to allow the dow els into the cylindrical
sleeve.
3
Fix the local reinforcem ent in position around the dow el com ponent together w ith any other
reinforcem ent that is required, ensuring that the correct cover to the reinforcem ent is m aintained.
Pour the concrete to com plete the installation of the Ancon shear connector.
Note:-
(i) Although installation is show n for Ancon D SD , the procedure is the sam e for all Ancon shear
connectors.
(ii) W here deep concrete pours are proposed, the installation w ill require further consideration. M ore
robust fixing of the sleeve and dow el com ponents w ill be necessary, to avoid displacem ent during
placing of the concrete.

Design J oint Widths
To allow for site variations, the designer should
consider increasing the calculated joint w idth
by a factor of up to 1.3 to obtain the design
joint w idth, w hich is a m axim um .
Local Reinforcement &Cover
As high tensile stresses are generated at
dow el locations, sufficient local reinforcem ent
needs to be included to ensure full design
capacity is achieved. Form ulae for calculating
m inim um areas of local reinforcem ent are
included on pages 12 and 13.
It is im portant that the correct cover to local
reinforcem ent around each Ancon D SD dow el
is achieved. M inim um cover is to the

Shear Load Connectors
DOWELLED J OINTS
D ow els are used to transfer shear across
construction and m ovem ent joints in concrete.
They are usually either cast or drilled into the
concrete. A single row of short thick dow els
provides reasonable shear transfer but suffer
from deform ation. This can lead to stress
concentrations, resulting in subsequent
spalling of the concrete.
W here dow els are used across expansion and
contraction joints, half the length of the bar is
debonded to allow m ovem ent to take place.
D ow elled joints either require form w ork to be
drilled for the dow els to pass through, or
concrete to be drilled for dow els to be resin
fixed in one side.
W here dow els are used at m ovem ent joints
the dow els w ill need to be accurately aligned
in both directions to ensure m ovem ent can
actually take place, otherw ise cracking is likely
to occur.
Single dow els are not very effective w hen
used across joints w ider than 10m m .
KEYED J OINTS
Keyed joints require com plicated form w ork to
create the tongue and groove. If the joint is
not form ed correctly, differential m ovem ent
can take place. Load is transferred through
the locally reduced section of the joint w hich
can at tim es result in cracking.
Mis aligned Dowels Res trict Movement and

Ancon ESD
The Ancon ESD shear load connector is used
w here loads are sm aller than those requiring
the D SD , but w here alignm ent is critical. It is
available in four sizes w ith each size available
in tw o lengths. The dow el com ponent is
D uplex stainless steel bar. The cylindrical
sleeve and flange plate are m anufactured from
grade 1.4301 (304).
Ancon ESDQ
The Ancon ESD Q shear load connector uses
the sam e dow el as the ESD , but the cylindrical
sleeve is contained w ithin a rectangular box
section to allow lateral m ovem ent or rotation in
addition to longitudinal m ovem ent. M aterial
specifications are the sam e as the ESD .
Ancon ED
The Ancon ED is a low cost dow el connector
for use in floor slabs w here alignm ent is
im portant but loads are sm all. The single
dow el shear connector is available in four sizes
w ith each size available in tw o lengths. The
sleeve com ponent is m ade from a durable
plastic and features an integral nail plate. The
dow el com ponent is available in D uplex
stainless steel, zinc plated and carbon steel.
Ancon Staisil Acoustic Dowel
The Ancon Staisil Acoustic D ow el is designed
to transfer shear loads and lim it sound
transm ission across joints in concrete. The
sleeve has Elastom er sound absorbing
m aterial betw een tw o stainless steel tubes and
a nail plate for fixing to form w ork. The sound
transm ission properties are generally
unaffected by either joint w idth or service load.
Tests in the frequency range of 100 - 3150 H z
have show n a reduction in sound transm ission
of 20dB . W hen the standard solid dow el w as
replaced by an antivibration dow el a reduction
of 25dB w as recorded.

Reinforcement Continuity Systems
R einforcem ent C ontinuity System s are an
increasingly popular m eans of m aintaining
continuity of reinforcem ent at construction
joints in concrete. The system elim inates the
need to drill shuttering and can sim plify
form w ork design, thereby accelerating the
construction process. The Ancon Keybox is
available in both standard units and special
configurations.
Reinforcing Bar Couplers
The use of reinforcing bar couplers can
provide significant advantages over lapped
joints. D esign and construction of the concrete
can be sim plified and the am ount of
reinforcem ent required can be reduced.
B ecause the strength of a m echanical splice is
independent of the concrete in w hich it is
located, the joint can also rem ain unaffected
by any loss of cover. The range includes
threaded and m echanically bolted couplers.
Punching Shear Reinforcement
U sed w ithin a slab to provide additional
reinforcem ent around colum ns, Ancon Shearfix
is the ideal solution to the design and
construction problem s associated w ith
punching shear. The system consists of
double-headed studs w elded to flat rails,
positioned in a sym m etrical pattern around the
colum n head. The shear load from the slab is
transferred through the studs into the colum n.
Channels and Bolts for Fixings to Concrete
C ast-in channels are used for fixing m asonry
support system s to the edges of concrete
floors and beam s. C hannels are available in
different sizes ranging from sim ple self
anchoring channels for restraints, to large
capacity channels w ith integral anchors.
A selection of channels can also be supplied
plain-backed for surface fixing. Expansion
bolts, resin anchors and set screw s in stainless
steel com plete the range of fixings.
Special Fabrications
Ancon has a w ealth of experience of w orking
w ith stainless steel and can produce special
fabrications to suit individual custom er
requirem ents. Ancon supplies industries such
as civil and m arine engineering, w ater,
petrochem ical, m ining and food handling and
m aintains large stocks of stainless steel in
order to m eet urgent delivery requirem ents.
