London-based Fluentify, a language learning platform which primarily use videoconferencing
has raised a $410K angel investment today by the former chairman of Barclays global
institutions group, Stefano Marsaglia, and co- head of Medioblanca investment bank. The
startup which was founded last year has come up with a total of $500,000 to date.
Fluentify is a webcam- based language learning community aiming to connect people who want
to improve their skills on specifc languages from instructors who are native speakers around the
world, allowing learners to become more fuent about the language. As for the instructors, they
need to pass the vetting procedure to ofcially become a fuentifer language tutor.
The target behind is to provide a pool of language tutors who are equipped with professional
skills and are deeply knowledgeable with their native language. This way, Fluentify users can
fnd tutors who are expert in particular professions whom at the same time can help them
enhance their specialist vocabulary, for example. This, according to the start-up sets itself apart
from an array of language learning platform existing out there.
The company also distinguishes itself from others with its in- app conversations, allowing users
to videoconference on the app itself, meaning no more additional plug-ins, third party software,
etc.
Fluentifys major rivals are Italki and Verbling. The start-up reveals that these companies are just
hugging to traditional language schools platforms- translating them online. What it sets apart
from others is that the tutors are not just mere English teachers but are professionals in their
own felds as well such as web developers, bankers, artists, etc. In other words, Fluentify wants
to push through a real life type of learning.
Additionally, Fluentify seems like an all-in- one suite. Users dont have to download plug-ins or
any third party software to use its videoconferencing platform. That means everything from
selecting tutors to online convo takes place on the app alone.
The company announced its already getting over 700 applications for tutors and had accepted
only the top 10 %. The vetting procedure extends via feedback system targeted at maintaining
quality levels up.
For a 30- minute session, tutors can charge between $8 to $30 averaging a price at around $13-
to $14. Fluentify makes money by taking 20% as service fee from the tutors.
