File Transfer Protocol
FTP - File Transfer Protocol is a very common method of mov-
ing files between two Internet sites. FTP is a special way to login
to another Internet site for the purposes of retrieving and/or send-
ing files. There are many Internet sites that have established pub-
licly accessible repositories of material that can be obtained us-
ing FTP, by logging in using the account name anonymous, thus
these sites are called anonymous ftp servers.

FTP Using Fetch on a Macintosh
1. Start the program Fetch.
2. At the opening dialog box, enter the following information. Your Host is the domain of the
computer that you are trying to FTP to. If you are going to your RA account, enter
ra.msstate.edu (see figure below). In the next boxes, enter your User ID and password.
Click the OK button.
3. A new connection box will appear and you will see the connection being made.
The Fetch screen will list the files in your account.

4. To put a file in your account, press the Put File button. The program will then prompt you to
find the file on your computer.
5. To get a file from your account, press the Get File button. The program will then prompt you
to tell it where the file will be saved on your computer.
6. To end the connection, go to the main menu and choose File and Close.
Choose File and Exit to close the program.

FTP Using WS-FTP
1. Start WS-FTP and you will get a Session Properties box. If you are logging into your RA
account, you want to enter ra.msstate.edu as the address (host name) and then your usual
userid and password to log on.
2. Once you have logged on you will see your Ra account in the right window and your local
computer in the left window. The left window is called the Local System (your computer)
while the right window is the Remote System (in this case your Ra account on the main
frame in Allen Hall).

3. Locate the file on your computer using the left side of the window.
4. Once the file is located, highlight the file, and press the middle arrow key that is pointing
toward your Ra account on the right side.
5. The file has been transported to your Ra account.

FTP
NFile Transfer Protocol is a very
common method of moving
files between two Internet
sites. FTP is a special way to
login to another Internet site
for the purposes of retrieving
and/or sending files.

NA file name is an identification
for a specified file, which
includes a name and usually an
extension.

NA file extension is a dot (.) with
a two, three or four letter code

format was used to create the
