ECU Tuning Guide Ver B

This document provides instructions for using PowerTUNE piggyback tuning software with RTune software to modify fuel and ignition maps for engine tuning. It describes how to connect the ECU, navigate fuel and ignition mapping tables, and adjust correction parameters like load selection, multiplier, and RPM limits. PowerTRONIC Piggy Back Tuning Guide for Rtune(Penta)

This document summarizes the features PowerTUNE to be used with RTune(Quad Control) and
is intended for those who have already used and are familiar with the RTune tuning software.

This software needs a windows platform to operate. Once RTune is opened, make sure to select
the target application in mode

1. Connect:
To connect the ECU, use the serial cable provided (Note: You cannot use a standard
serial cable, use only those supplied/authorized by Race Dynamics).

Checking COM port (for windows operating system)
- Go to device manager on the computer
- Scroll down until you see Ports (COM & LTP), and note that COM port number
Enter this number on the tuning software Port No. field and click CONNECT
Same process to be followed when using a USB-to-serial converter as well.

After successful connection, the status bar on the right top indicates CONNECTED.
The red cursors on the screen (in all tabs) are active as long as the ECU is connected to
the software indicates the exact load cell/s the ECU is reading from.

2. Fuel map

This table is used to control fuel delivery. You can increase or decrease delivered fuel
quantity. The fuel tables are arranged RPM vs Load, min load at the bottom and max load
at the top, min RPM on the left and max RPM on the right.

The default values are set to 25(Stock/Original calibration). As long as the values are at
25 the fuel injection quantity is just like the original ECU i.e. no fuel quantity
modulation. Any value more than 25 increases fuel, and less than 25 decreases fuel,
controlled as a percentage of original quantity. The non-negative difference between the
table value and 25 is the difference in percentage changes (refer overall multiplier in
section 5.2 )

Mapping limits
Max value: 46
Min value: 0
Resolution: 0.2

=25 fuel remains quantity retained like original
>25 will increase fuel. (in percentage)
<25 will decrease fuel. (in percentage)
Ex. 1
Value 28 will increase the fuel by (28-25) = 3 (percent), i.e. 3 percent more than the
stock/original
Ex. 2
Value 20 will decrease the fuel by (25-20) = 5 (percent), i.e. 5 percent less than
stock/original

3. Ignition Map
This table is used to control the ignition timing of the engine. You can increase or
decrease ignition timing of the engine.
The fuel tables are arranged RPM vs Load, min load at the bottom and max load at the
top, min RPM on the left and max RPM on the right.

The default values are set to 25(Stock calibration). As long as the values are at 25 the
fuel injection quantity is just like the original ECU i.e. no ignition timing modulation .
Any value more than 25 advances ignition timing, and less than 25 retards ignition
timing. The non-negative difference between the table value and 25 is the difference in
ignition timing (in degrees) change.

The default ignition values are 25(Stock/Original calibration).
Mapping limits
Max value: 45
Min value: 0
Resolution: 1 degree

=25 is same ignition timing as original
>25 will make the timing advance
<25 will make the timing retard
Ex. 1
Value 28 will increase the timing(advance) by (28-25) = 3 deg
Ex. 2
Value 20 will decrease the timing (retard) by (25-20) = 5 deg

4. Correction1

4.1 Load selection
The load reference the ECU is required to use can be set here, with the following
choice of load reference -
5 OE TPS Original vehicle throttle position sensor

3

6 OE MAP original vehicle manifold pressure sensor
[For KTM, value 6 is used for TPS input]
7 On Board manifold pressure sensor (max 1 bar over atmospheric)

4.2 MAP Signal Clamp

This function is used to clagmp the values of the original MAP sensor to a set
limit. It is mainly used in forced induction applications (turbocharged or
supercharged) where increase in manifold pressure may cause the original ECU to
read it as an error and trigger a limp home mode.

The MAP clamping can also be done with reference to RPM.
The values entered in this field are voltage values without decimal. Example, to
set a clamp to max voltage of 3.4V, set this field to 34.

5. Correction2

5.1 Ignition selection
This function is used to select the ignition configuration of the vehicle. Check the
number of ignition coils on the vehicle and enter accordingly as mentioned
2 Single coil, ignition every 180deg of crank (e.g. Suzuki Esteem)
4 Dual coil, ignition on each coil once every 360 deg (e.g. Suzuki Baleno)
4 Quad coil, ignition on each coil once every 720 deg (e.g. Honda Accord)
6- Single coil, ignition once every 720deg of crank (eg. KTM)
The PowerTUNE RPM and timing parameters are calculated by this module.

5.2 Fuel Multiplier
This is a multiplying factor for the increase/decrease in fuel. The fuel map
difference as set in Fuel1 can further be multiplied by a factor to extend the
overall range of fuel quantity adjustments. On the fuel1 tab, the max adjustment
that can be achieved is +21%/-25%, the multiplier in this tab can be used to
increase it by X2, X4, X6 and X8
The multiplier values are
2 : X1
4: X2
6: X4
8: X6
10: X10

Ex. 1
If 4 is selected then fuel multiplier is X2, and 28 is the value in the fuel table then
the fuel is increased by

Block, Bangalore 560034

4

(28-25) = 3;
(3X2) = 6 (percent);

Ex. 2
If 6 is selected then fuel multiplier is X4, and 20 is the value in the fuel table then
the fuel is decreased by (25-20) = 5;
(5X4) = 20 (percent);

5.3 Noise filter
This function is used to filter noise in input signals. Default value is set to 10. If
this value is too high, the ECU will not read higher RPMs, if the value is too low,
the ECU may occasionally read spikes in RPM (higher than operating RPMs). Set
his value accordingly based in your application.

5.4 RPM Channel selection

5.5 Injector override above RPM index
This parameter controls the RPM index, above which the ECU injects fuel
irrespective of original ECU injection values

5.6 Injector override above Load index
This parameter controls the load index, above which the ECU injects fuel
irrespective of original ECU injection values

Note: The rev extending feature is available on engines where the rev limiter is activated
by a fuel cut only, where engine synchronization is derived from ignition signals.
Parameters 5.5 and 5.6 specify where the PowerTUNE has to switch from piggyback
mode to revcut eliminate mode. The index mentioned are load and RPM, RPM index on
fuel1 tab left to right is 1 to 20, Load index on same tab bottom to top is 1 to 16.
Anytime the PowerTUNE is in this part of the map, it switches over to revcut eliminate
mode. The base reference for fuel value is the original ECU fuel injector duration before
the mode switchover. When the revcut eliminate mode is active, engine rev cut can be
controlled by Limiter at RPM field in Correction 1 tab.

Conditions to enter revcut elimination mode, in the defined order-
1. Load has to be above Load index
2. RPM has to be higher than RPM index

Example For KTM duke the parameters Injector override above RPM index =10 and
Injector override above load index =8, means once the load is above load index 8, AND
THEN when the RPM index is above index 10 (9000RPM), then the revcut eliminate
mode is activated.
