Camsight very kindly allowed Sally to raise 450 for CDA which is brilliant. A Big thank you to Sally for doing this very worthwhile event also to Camsight for their co-operation. Perhaps someone else can do this for us next Summer as CDA is always looking for ways to raise money Thank you Sally, and well done! JAMIE BILLAM
CDA NEWS Message from the Chairperson Lots of exciting things are happening at CDA at the moment. In this newsletter we are announcing Deaf Day in Cambridge which will be on the 27th October. Deaf day will be a day for everyone with hearing loss to come along to find out what is going on in the local area and different ways of joining in. We will need lots of volunteers to make the day a success so if you have some time spare and you can help us with preparing for Deaf day then please get in touch with Jamie. We are also pleased to announce that Sally Skeldon and Helen Money will be returning to CDA from Camsight on the 1st of September just before our AGM. We are delighted that the Supporting People project will be back at our Office again where it belongs. We are working with the council to prove what a great job we do helping members of the Deaf community. We want to do an even better job in the future so we will be collecting information at the Deaf Drop ins and at all the groups and social events that we run to find out what we need to do better. We know that there are people out there that we don't help but we want to be able to help so we want to ask everyone who gets the newsletter to come along to Deaf Day with friends who are hard of hearing , Deaf , deafened, parents of children with hearing problems, carers in fact anyone! Our AGM is on the 3rd of September in the afternoon at 2pm so we would like to invite you all to come along to that. With best wishes to everyone JANIE
Signature Awards Many congratulations to Jamie Billam. He has won the Signature Award of Regional BSL Tutor of the Year, for the Eastern region. Jamie will meet up with the other regional winners, in November, when the winner of the Signature Award for the BSL Tutor of the Year, will be announced. This is fantastic news. I know that Jamie really enjoys teaching BSL, and I am sure that everyone at CDA will join me in sending him our very best wishes. ANN RATCLIFFE
CDA Office As this picture shows, on the right - that Trustees, David Fairey and Godfrey Palmer have been busy removing the wallpaper and then filling in cracks with polyfilla cement. Then a lot of painting on the ceiling, walls, skirting boards, frames, radiators etc. We are making good progress so far but we still have a lot to do such as putting in new tables, wiring work, built in cupboards, new Double glazing windows and new carpet. By the time the next newsletter in Autumn comes out, we hope to have a picture of completed and re-decorated office. JAMIE BILLAM

CDA NEWS March Deaf Club On Friday 13 th April 2012 we had our 29 th Annual General Meeting and Election of Officers. The meeting went well, the officers are still same and one new member joined the committee, her name is Mrs Elaine Heath. The gardening was cancelled on Friday 4 th May 2012 because our speaker cannot talk during Spring or Summer, because he is very busy. He will probably speak to us next February. We had some games and chatted instead. On Friday 1st June 2012 we had a fantastic evening. The committee had prepared for the Queens Diamond Jubilee Celebration and we had a nice buffet foods, wines and soft drinks, bunting and some flags aloft. Lots of deaf people came and took photos, People wore red, blue and white clothes. Ann Ratcliffe organised a Royal Family Quiz with 60 questions. 8 teams of 4 people played. This was quite a hard quiz but good fun. The winners were Catherine Palmer, David Cook, Rodney Hopkins and Carol Knott. Diamond Jubilee Cake was made by Catherine Palmer.

Greek Dancing Group On Friday evening, the 25th May, fourteen turned up for the Greek dancing lessons and as usual enjoyed the evening. For those who have not had the opportunity to learn Greek dancing, we were taught by Anastasia Giagkoudi who used BSL whilst dancing as well! Anastasia also knows the Greek sign language as her parents are deaf. We practised different dance steps which were Fysouni, Kastrinos, Zonaradikos that we had previously learned. That evening, we did a new dance called Tsakonikos which is the name of a village in the Peloponnese, a region in Greece. Greek dancing is a very old tradition. There are different styles and versions some slow, some quick, some bouncy, some leaps always something new for us to learn, these are from all the islands and mainland areas. There are over 4,000 traditional dances that come from all regions of Greece. Half way through the evening, we stopped when someone spotted a cobweb coming down from the ceiling! Maybe the spider wanted to watch the dancing! Everybody could dance well although there were some clodhoppers, we could not work out if it was Jamie or Paul, we were told not to bang the floor! It was the last evening of Greek dancing but we hope it will start again in September. We are all very grateful to Anastasia for giving us the lessons, she was very patient but always with a big smile. Many thanks to Anastasia!! ELAINE HEATH
Editors note Yes I agree with Elaine and I think it was a great success and good fun. I just hope it will restart one day. Thank you Anastasia. JAMIE BILLAM

Editors News I think the Summer has finally arrived as I am sure everyone feels a bit warmer despite all the rain we have had! I hope you are planning to go somewhere for your holiday? It is going to be a busy Summer for London with the Olympic games. Let us hope that Team Great Britain will do well and get as many medals as they can. Perhaps the best haul ever? Supporting People Services is moving back to CDAs office which is very good news. This means Sally Skeldon and Helen Money will now rejoin us as part of CDA. The Trustees have been busy redecorating the office and it should be nice when it is all done. Talking about Sally, you can see what she has been up to recently on the front page of the newsletter, she has raised 450 for the Deaf community by taking part in a 100 mile bike ride. That is brilliant. Well done Sally. We have set up a new project in Peterborough for Monday mornings every two weeks and its called Coffee morning in ASDA. I have been along a few times and it is really a very pleasant get together to chat with free drinks. Everyone who is interested in the Deaf Community are welcome. Also I hope to set up a new Deaf Social in Cambridge and to work with a few people to get this project up and running. Janie has mentioned in her report that there will be a Deaf Day and AGM. Please do come and support us for these important events for the Cambridgeshire Deaf Community. On behalf of all readers, I would like to wish many congratulations to Andrea Richardson, a very popular interpreter, who married Jonathan last April. Finally, I would like to say a big thank you to all the well wishers for the many cards I received for my recent illness. I am overwhelmed and really appreciated that people are thinking of me and also members of my family who have been through difficult time. JAMIE BILLAM
