CHDF 0828 KAc Case Study

Scomi Oiltools developed a solution using potassium acetate instead of potassium chloride in a drilling fluid system to inhibit reactive shales. This allowed an operator to drill four wells in Asia near sensitive environments while maintaining chloride levels below 500 ppm in disposed waste. Using potassium acetate instead of potassium chloride greatly reduced the need to dilute and dispose of chloride-contaminated water and mud, saving on disposal costs. The system successfully inhibited shales while meeting environmental targets.

DRILLING FLUIDS

BACKGROUND
Onshore drilling in some Asian countries occurs in close proximity to sensitive
vegetation, aquatic life and/or arable land. Local regulatory bodies enforce
Environmental Disposal Policies, which limit the Chloride content of the disposed
waste so that it will not have an adverse efect on the vegetation and aquatic life.
A limit of +/- 500 ppm of Chloride in disposed waste is generally enforced. Potassium,
usually supplied by KCl, is required to inhibit reactive shales.
SCOMI OILTOOLS SOLUTION
Replace KCl with Potassium Acetate in a HYDRO-FOIL GEN 1 system in order to
provide environmentally friendly shale inhibition and provide a low to chloride-free
fuid system.
RESULTS
Successfully drilled and completed four wells for the operator, close to budgeted
AFE price and maintained the Chloride concentration of the disposed water at less
than 500 ppm. Potassium Acetate was also used to provide the completion fuid and
part of it was then recycled to form the base brine for drilling the next well in the
sequence.
Typical length of the sections drilled with potassium Acetate based HYDRO-FOIL GEN 1
system were: 16 +/- 775 m, 12 +/- 2,600 m and 8 +/- 875 m.
The replacement of KCl with Potassium Acetate greatly reduced the dilution
requirement in disposal of approximately 2,600 m
3
per well of Chloride-contaminated
water, brine and mud. The disposal of solid waste (+/- 1,600 MT per) would have been
a major concern and been unable to meet customer disposal criteria.
