BEVERAGES
A drink, or beverage, is a kind of liquid which is
specifically prepared for human consumption.
There are many types for drinks. They can be
divided into various groups such as:
plain water,
alcohol,
non-alcoholic drinks,
soft drinks (carbonated drinks),
fruit or vegetable juices, and
hot drinks

BASIC CONCEPT OF PRODUCING BEVERAGES
Manufacturing Process
Clarifying the water
Quality of water is crucial to the success of beverage
manufacturing. Suspended particles, organic
matter, and bacteria, which may degrade taste and
color, are removed through a series of coagulation,
filtration and chlorination.
During clarification process, alkalinity is adjusted
with an addition of lime to reach the desired pH
level.

Manufacturing Process. . . . .
Filtering, sterilizing, and dechlorinating the water
Clarified water is poured through a sand filter to remove
fine particles of floc.
Sterilization is necessary to destroy bacteria and organic
compounds that might spoil the waters taste and color.
Next, an activitated carbon filter dechlorinates the water
and removes residual organic matter, much like the sand
filter. A vacuum pump de-aerates the water before it pass
into a dosing station.
BASIC CONCEPT OF PRODUCING BEVERAGES
Mixing the ingredients
The dissolved sugar and flavor concentrates are
pumped into batch tanks where they are mixed.
The water and syrup are combined by
sophisticated machines, called proportioners,
which regulate the flow rates and ratios of the
liquids. The vessels are pressurized with CO
2
to
prevent aeration of the mixture.
BASIC CONCEPT OF PRODUCING BEVERAGES
Carbonating the beverage
Carbonation is generally added to the finished
product, though it may be mixed into the water at
an earlier stage.
The beverage is slightly over-pressured with CO
2
to facilitate the movement into storage tanks and
ultimately into filler machine.
BASIC CONCEPT OF PRODUCING BEVERAGES
Filling and packaging
The finished product is transferred into bottles or
cans at extremely high flow rates. The containers
are immediately sealed with pressure-resistant
closures, either tinplate or steel crowns with
corrugated edges, twist offs, or pull tabs.
BASIC CONCEPT OF PRODUCING BEVERAGES
The beverage sealed containers are brought to room
temperature, since they are generally cooled during
the manufacturing processes, before labeling to
prevent condensation from ruining the labels. Labels,
containing information about the beverage, is then
affixed to the containers.
Finally, containers are packed into cartons or trays for
shipment.
