Nawaicoba farmers get
upgraded health center
By ANUSHIL KUMAR
More than 5000 residents
of Nawaicoba including three
iTaukei villages have had their
prayers answered after their
request to upgrade the current
nursing station to a health cen-
tre was approved by the Prime
Minister Rear Admiral Voreqe
Bainimarama.
On Sunday, July 6, Prime
Minister Bainimarama made
this known during a visit to
the area which is home to
one of the biggest sugar cane
planting sectors in the Nadi
area.
We will make sure that the
nursing station is upgraded to
have a doctor and also a few
nurses, he told the residents.
Currently only a nurse is
stationed in Nawaicoba and
residents highlighted the dif-
culties they face in trying to
access health services.
The Prime Minister also
alluded to the residents that
Government was working to-
wards ensuring that shortages
of doctors are addressed.
Programs such as the TOP-
PERS scheme for fulltime
scholarships for doctors have
seen an increase in the intake
of a large number of students
who have pursued to become
doctors.
Student doctors from the
region have also been inte-
grated and given fulltime jobs
in the Fijian health sector.
Sabeto kids plan Australia trip
Since its inception in May,
2013 the Sabeto Kidz club has
received a number of helping
hands from various organi-
zations and members of the
community who also share
the clubs vision of assisting
underprivileged children from
the ages of 10-14 and in the
process instilling discipline in
an innovative manner whilst
increasing the social activity
between various ethnic groups
living in the greater Sabeto
area.
The idea of this club was
positively received by the
Sabeto community with 67
children turning up on the
rst day for registration; this
exceeded our estimate of 20
children, said Club Director
Pauliasi Natabe.
Lending a helping hand the
Sabeto District School freely
shared its resources to the
club and catered for the clubs
needs in terms of venue and
sporting equipments whereas
members of the club also or-
ganize bake sales or fundrais-
ers for the clubs immediate
needs.
The trip arranged in con-
junction with Queensland
University of Technology is
a chance for the young kids
to expand their views and
knowledge. While fundrais-
ing began last August we
still have more to reach our
threshold of $40, 000 for this
tour and we will need support
from our community to make
this tour possible for the chil-
dren, said Mr Natabe
Though small and budding
the Sabeto Kidz Club hopes
that individual, communal
and national initiatives will be
more inclusive of all children
and assist them in discover-
ing their potential gifts and
talents.
The club which is situated
in Koroyaca Village in Sabeto
plans to take kids on tour this
December.

Crushing season
starts
The much anticipated crushing season in the Western and
Northern division got underway in mid-June.
The ve percent pay rise announced by Prime Minister
and Minister for Sugar Rear Admiral (Ret) Voreqe Bainima-
rama has given a much needed boost to the Fiji Sugar Cor-
poration (FSC) workers to produce their best as sugar buyers
will always look to buy good quality brown sugar.
To achieve maximum gains from the years hard work,
FSC has invested 18 million dollars on mill repairs, cane ac-
cess roads, its resources and to strengthen the transportation
of cane to the mills. FSC has also brought in two locomo-
tives to facilitate faster cartage of sugar cane to the mills.
Meanwhile, since the burning of sugarcane elds is a ma-
jor concern, the Fiji Police Force is working closely with the
Fiji Sugar Corporation and advisory councilors to prevent
any further illegal burning of sugarcane farms.

Govt
empower
women
The new Namotomoto
Womens Resource Centre in
Namotomoto village in Nadi
was ofcially opened by the
Minister for Social Welfare,
Women and Poverty Allevia-
tion Dr Jiko Luveni on Satur-
day, June 14.
The government-funded
centre is designed to create
employment and income gen-
erating for the Namotomoto
village. The Ministry also
presented the Namotomoto
Womens Club industrial,
overlock and electrical sewing
machines.
In her opening address at
the event, Dr Luveni said that
Women Resource Center is
one of the many programs of
the Bainimarama Government
to help alleviate poverty by
banking on the skills and en-
trepreneurial roles of women.
Women are indeed, con-
vincing agents of change. Na-
motomoto Womens Resource
Center is special as it is cen-
trally situated and accessible
to all women of this commu-
nity to sell their products to
close by markets. It belongs
to a group of extremely enter-
prising women keen to go the
yards to succeed.
Through this project, Na-
motomoto village and the sur-
rounding villages of Nadi at
large will have the opportunity
to contribute to the economic
development of our country.
I have no doubt that the dy-
namic culture of Nadi will
be a business boost to the
women of Namotomoto. With
new ideas, new skills and en-
couragement, we can provide
those opportunities for the
benet of everyone
This demonstrates gov-
ernments commitment to
institutionalize womens pro-
grams and services in com-
munities such as yours. Gov-
ernment is very serious on
empowerment of Fijian wom-
en and todays event is a mark
of this. Through Bainimarama
government, an enabling envi-
ronment for women to be free
to live lives free of violence
and free to pursue economic
and political empowerment is
uplifted, Dr Luveni said.
The new facility will also
be used by other government
agencies and stakeholders to
promote women livelihood
programs, nancial literacy
training, sexual and reproduc-
tive health programs and oth-
ers.
The resource centre opens
the window for women that
will improve their lives and
the lives of their families.
It boosts their morale and it
is indescribable the gainful
benets that will unfold. This
year similar centres have been
opened in Kadavu and Bua.
Macuata, Qarani, Korovisilou
and Ba are near commission-
ing to fully meet the planned
women resource centres for
2014, Dr Luveni added.
While speaking about the
plans for this new Centre,
Mrs Sereima Lutumailagi,
president of Namotomoto
Womens Club says the core
product will be sewing and
selling school uniforms to as-
sist children who come from
disadvantaged families.
Sewing is the major ac-
tivity for our club, however
we were in need of a centre
through which we can oper-
ate in a more organised and
consolidated manner. We
have more than 40 registered
members in the club who will
be sewing school uniforms
that will be supplied to Nadi
District School, Nadi Prima-
ry School and Ratu Navula
School.
We have already taken
some orders for school uni-
forms which will be sold at
prices ranging from as low as
$8 to $10. The club will assist
the women members to open
their savings account so that
once they start earning money
they can also save for rainy
days. This centre is a great in-
vestment into the lives of the
women and children of Na-
motomoto village.
Apart from the uniforms
we also hope to sew items like
table cover, cushion and pil-
low cases. We are grateful to
the government for providing
this much needed facility in
our village, Mrs Lutumailagi
said.
The women resource cen-
tres is a major capital project
for the Ministry and todate it
has built a total of 45 wom-
en centre extensions and 16
women resource centres in
Fiji.

From Navosa to Nadi
Women changes life around after spending time for marijuana cultivation
Karalaini Wati of Vatuba-
lavu, Navosa was given a
second chance to turn her life
around thanks to the Yellow
Ribbon Project and Micro Fi-
nance Nadi.
The Yellow Ribbon proj-
ect which was adopted from
the Singapore model and
launched in 2008 in the coun-
try has seen the successful
rehabilitation of thousands of
former inmates who are now
earning a decent living and
have refrained from getting
into criminal activities again.
Everyone deserves a sec-
ond chance. All inmates have
talents and Karalainis story
is one of the many successful
ones we have witnessed over
the years, said divisional re-
habilitation ofcer western
George Bakoso.
By MARGARET NAQIRI Karalaini was imprisoned
in May, 2010 along with her
husband for cultivating mari-
juana.
She was released from cus-
tody on October 3, 2011 and
nished the rest of her sen-
tence doing community work
at the Nadi Police Station until
February, 2012.
When I was inside for one
year and four months, they
(ofcers) helped me a lot with
the programs they provided
for us, especially with the pro-
gram called Seed of Success
which was organized by the
youth and sports division, and
this program changed me and
thats when I decided that I
will come back and be a good
citizen and open my new busi-
ness, Karalaini said.
I started off my business
with sewing, but then I had to
stop because I did not have the
funds, so I decided to sell mats
as this was easier for me. I got
the mats from Naitasiri from
my family members to sell.
I also travel to Ba to buy
mattresses from the factory
and hire a carrier to Naitasiri.
Sometimes they do not have
the money to buy the mat-
tresses, we exchange with
mats. Now I am planning to
go to Bua to get more mats,
she added.
She said the Micro Finance
Unit in Nadi was very helpful
in getting her business into ac-
tion with nancial assistance.
I would also like to say
that people shouldnt judge
us, God has already made
plans on how your life will
turn out, but we should always
work hard and do good and
everything will be possible, I
would also like to tell my sis-
ters who are still in prison that
that is not the end of life, that
when they get out they should
also do what I did, as there
is a lot of opportunities out
there to make life easy and to
become better citizens, Kar-
alaini said.
Micro Finance is very
happy to help in as Karalaini
is the rst inmate that we
helped to get her business
running, and we are willing to
help others like her who want
to start their small businesses
as well as everyone deserves
to be given a second chance in
life, said Acalia Dakua, eld
credit ofcer of FCOSS Micro
Finance, Nadi.
The Nadi Town Council
has given Karalaini a table
in the market where she is al-
lowed to sell her mats.

Residents benet from LTAs outreach program
Governments commitment
to the Fiji Decade of Action
for Road Safety 2011 to 2020,
which was launched by the
Prime Minister Voreqe Baini-
marama in 2011, has seen 506
ordinary Fijians being trained,
tested and presented with driv-
ing licences.
The three weeks community
outreach training and awareness
program conducted by the Land
Transport Authority (LTA) that
began in May was held at Navo-
ci village Hall in Nadi.
In an ofcial event organised
at Namotomoto village in Nadi
recently, the Minister for Social
Welfare, Women and Poverty
Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni pre-
sented certicates to the new
driving licence holders in Nadi
who had undergone the training
provided by LTA. The licenses
presented ranged from the fol-
lowing categories (5 level 1 De-
fensive Driving Certicates, 40
Public Service Vehicle (PSV)
Defensive Driving Certicates,
64 Group 4 Drivers Licence,
169 Class 2 Provincial Drivers
Licence and 228 Learners Per-
mits).
While presenting the li-
cences, Dr Luveni said that
this initiative has been pos-
sible through the Bainimarama
governments vision to stretch
out the services to the doorstep
of the communities through
awareness and outreach pro-
grams.
Outreach or Community
Engagement operates within
the vision of Bainimarama
Governments ongoing pro-
gram to improve the level of
services to the ordinary Fijians
in the remote and rural commu-
nities. This means that they do
not have to come to LTA ofces
to get their learners permit and
to get the defensive driving or
drivers test. It eases the nan-
cial burden associated with pay-
ing fares to travel all the way
from rural areas to LTA ofces
and all the required trainings
and testing is conducted near
to their locations and in a much
friendly environment, Dr Lu-
veni said.
The Land Transport Au-
thority through outreach pro-
grams have reached out to
thousands of people in the rural
and maritime islands. Outreach
doesnt mean compromising the
standard of service, but is pur-
posely meant to make life easier
to our ordinary Fijians.
Dr Luveni reminded the
drivers to champion the, Safe-
ty on Our Roads at the highest
level.
To all those drivers who
have been certicated today-
our request is that you look af-
ter your drivers licence, it is the
source of income for you and
your family. Respect and follow
the road rules, look after your
safety and the safety of your
vehicle and most importantly
the safety of other road users.
The LTA will gladly renew the
licences when they are satised
that you are capable of main-
taining the safety standards that
they stand for.
While receiving his PSV De-
fensive Driving Licence, Desh
Reddy, a retired worker of FSC
(Fiji Sugar Corporation) from
Malolo Nadi thanked the Baini-
marama government for open-
ing this opportunity to ordinary
Fijians. I am very happy that I
have nally got my PSV Defen-
sive Driving licence which will
assist me start my taxi business.
Currently, I have a carrier busi-
ness in Nadi and I am planning
to start the taxi business soon,
which will become a reality
now that I have nally got the
required licence, Mr Reddy
said.
I thank the LTA for provid-
ing this awareness and training
programs at a venue closer to
our homes, the sessions were
very informative and interac-
tive.

The Department of Lan-

this year hosting Creative
Circle on the theme: Artistic
Gifts, on 9th of May, 2014.
Enchanted scores of people in
attendance marvelled various
forms of creativity and this is
a testimony of the success of
the programme. This indisput-
ably provided a meaningful
display of creativity to our
students at Saweni Campus.
We have signicantly con-
tributed in our UniFiji Cre-
ative Circle through a variety
of scholarly and creative writ-
ing and creativity: ranging
from poetry recital, creative
art, drama and singing, to
name a few. UniFiji Creative

presents our talented, multi-
skilled and exceptional gifted

it, that elusive muse of some-

to present that ash of inspi-
ration as the masterpiece and
allowing our creative imagi-
nations to roam free.
The Master of Ceremony
for this event, Avineel Ku-
mar, led us swiftly through a
power-packed programme.
He expressed that the mem-
bers through this platform
wish to achieve a balance
between modernity and tra-
dition in their creativity. The
members contribution at this
event formed the limelight of
the afternoon.
The programme unfolded
with a lucid and thoughtful
deliberation by Professor Na-
rendra Reddy. He highlighted
that creativity is something
that cannot be measured and
at times creativity comes
into existence by chance. As
teachers, academics and re-
searchers, creativity is crucial
for our jobs. It is not about
bringing ideas down from
heaven to earth, but explor-
ing creative ideas of our own.
These creations assist us to
understand more clearly some
aspect of reality in this present
world and/or give us guidance
as to how to correct negative
aspects of the present reality.
For example, the Russian nov-
elist Leo Tolstoys complex
ctional characters helped
people better understand the
various social types pro-
duced in tsarist Russia.
Professor Reddys en-
lightening speech on creativ-
ity allowed the audience to
view the art of creativity from
various dimensions. Another
thought provoking talk on
creativity by our registrar, PT.
Kamlesh Arya saw the audi-
ence totally imbued on the
slides he shared with us on
making the most of creative
art from discarded items. His
talk on creativity left many
thinking on ways we too can
engage in meaningful cre-
ations. The programme also
heard a brief talk by the coor-
dinator of Creative Circle, Ms.
Kamala Naiker, highlighting
the reasons behind organising
these events. She stressed on
the need for higher education
providers like The University
of Fiji to embrace a variety of
ingenious air of our students
and staff. She emphasised that
UniFiji Creative Circle pro-
vides opportunities for art and
cultural expressions of our so-
ciety and she vouched that this
time the Artistic Creativity by
students will be a surprise and
relished by one and all.
Todays event saw creativ-
ity at its best when with the
curtain raiser; Ashita Ram
performing a spectacular tra-
ditional Indian Bharat Nati-
yaam. Her art of mastering
this momentous Indian dance
saw the crowd steered in prox-
imity with the creator itself.
We also witnessed a classical
dance by Chaya , Ashita and
Deepam. The highlight of the
programme was original poet-
ry recitals in three languages:
English, Hindi and iTaukei
read by Tatoka, Radhika and
Suvishna. It is pleasing to
note that Creative Circle en-
compasses the signicance of
Fijis vernacular languages.
Also, Taina demonstrated
an iTaukei weaving; everyone
present for the function got
their hands on experience in
weaving of Tabua string and
dressing belt. The display of
colourful paintings by Chaya,
Rajnesh and Monsiha thrilled
the audience on their artistic
gifts.
Creative Circle has lived
up to its name by including
yet another form of art, a pen-
cil drawing competition by
staff and students of the uni-
versity. The programme got
better by the hour when the
audience actively entailed in
drawing and colouring.
The audience marvelled
creativity at its best and en-
joyed every minute of this en-
livening and vitalizing work
of talented artists, writers and
designers. The audience was
thrilled when a demonstration
by Chhaya and Kavita got
them involved in designing
greeting cards.
The creative functions here
at UniFiji give mileage to our
talented, multi-skilled stu-
dents to expose their hidden
artistic gifts and share these
productive activities with
their friends.
The Department of Lan-
guage, Literature and Com-
munication is joining dots for
a bigger scope and blanket
coverage for the cultures of
Fiji, appreciating local cre-
ativity.
The programme ended
with enjoyment and lavish re-
freshments.

Girmit anniversary
Speaking at the 135th Anniversary of Gir-
mit, the Registrar of The University of Fiji,
Kamlesh Arya asked those present on the sig-
nicance of what was being celebrated.
He then responded by stating that the cel-
ebration was about acknowledging: the chal-
lenges the Girmitiyas faced, the social dislo-
cation they encountered, the visionary efforts
they made towards uplifting their standards
and that of the progeny, the level of resilience
they displayed, the heart wrenching stories of
pain and persecution they went through, their
determination to survive against all odds, the
hardships of the unknown terrain the 61,000
girmitiyas faced, the contributions they made
to the development and economy of Fiji and
remembering those who never made it to the
shores en-route their treacherous journey they
were enticed to take.
Landing in Fiji on that fateful day of 14
March 1879 started a new era of life and strug-
gles for the girmitiyas in the hostile wilderness
of Fiji under harsh and degrading conditions,
stated Mr. Arya.
That fateful day and that new era is 135
years old and is entrenched in the annals of
Fiji. However, what needs to be analysed is

injustices, ensuring our self worth, upholding
human dignity, creating a niche within the di-
verse Fijian society, respecting the ethos and
the culture that has been set through painful
encounters and sacrices made, overcoming
condescending social attitude, moving out of
the past and making new adventures, preser-
vation of moral and ethical values and social
ideals and being law abiding Fijians under all
circumstances.
Mr. Arya stressed that the present generation
needs to learn from the episodes that the forefa-
ther had been through between 1879 and 1916
are our strengths endurance as we continue to
play our role shaping our future and that of our
nation. Future will be determined by what we
make of our present and therefore we must stop
believing in the clich that we are the stolen

pitying ourselves and work towards self worth

sion visited the Saweni Cam-

useful information on educa-
tional opportunities available
at the university.
Ever since its establish-
ment ten-years-ago, the Uni-
versity of Fiji has grown
from strength to strength with
thousands of students already
graduating in different elds
of study.
Last year the university
achieved another milestone
following the inaugural gradu-
ation of medical students from
Dr Umanand Prasad School of

Vice-chancellor Professor

days are a great way to show-
case the university and its fa-

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Fiji has announced the winners
of the inaugural Vice-Chancellors Doctoral Scholarships.
Professor Richard Coll said the University Research Committee, who de-
cided on the winners, was delighted by the response and quality of applica-
tions for the Scholarships.
These Scholarships are a part of the Universitys strategic focus on re-
search, he said.
With support from Fiji Higher Education Commission we are really driv-
ing the research agenda at the University. A key component of any research
programme at a modern University is quality postgraduates.
According to Professor Coll, there are multiple benets for a strong post-
graduate programme.
First we get quality research outputs, and with doctorate students in par-
ticular you can focus on substantial research projects.
Off major importance for Fiji is capacity building; the end result of a
good PhD is a highly skilled researcher who can contribute to Fijis develop-
ment. A pleasing aspect of the Scholarships is that it allows students who
might otherwise be denied access to doctoral level study.
This is a key aim of the University of Fiji; its founders have deep sense
of social responsibility and the University has strived to provide quality edu-
cation that is accessible to all and strongly believes no one should be denied
education because of nancial constraints these scholarships allow capable
Fijians access to higher education while at the same time greatly benetting
the county, Professor Coll said.
The recipients of the inaugural doctoral scholarships are Adarsh Kumar
(IT with Professor Shawkat Ali), Neelesh Singh (Economics / Accounting
with Professor Narendra Reddy), Yogesh Nandan (Accounting with Profes-
sor Kieran James), Dhirendra Prasad (Education with Dr Wahab Ali), Ra-
jnesh Mudaliar (Mathematics with Professor Vishwa Maurya).

The 2014 Arya Pratinidhi Sabha
Convention which was held in Nad-
roga provided a perfect opportunity
for the University of Fiji to highlight
issues pertaining to Education Re-
search and Vedic Values in Political
Governance.
Vice-chancellor Professor Rich-
ard Coll who was chief guest at the
convention spoke on the theme with
great interest.
Scientic methods of data col-
lection and interpretation are deemed
by many as the best because of the
numerous successes of science,
Professor Coll said.
In such a view religious values
and a humanistic view of the world
is either discounted or even derided.
Research done by scientists is
considered to always follow the so-
called scientic method, which
is hypothesis-driven, always used,
always involves replication of nd-
ings.

A business like an auto-

This brainy-quote has
inspired Krishna, an expe-

into the coolest looking car in
Nadi.
Krishna said it needed
sheer determination and hard
work in order to accomplish
one of his dreams.
It took me three-years to
fully complete the modica-

the Nissan engine to get it up
and running on road, said
Krishna, who has been oper-

Fijian hosts program gains momentum
Fijian Hosts continue to receive increasing acclaim and ap-
preciation for their excellent customer service by visitors to
Nadi International Airport and the Fijian tourism industry.
On Tuesday, June 24, ve exceptional frontline staff mem-
bers of Nadi Airport teams received awards at a presentation
ceremony held at the Rafes Gateway Hotel, Nadi.
Ravinesh Kumar (FRCA), Joji Veiqaravi (AFL), Makereta
Sakoro (Evergreen International), George Williams (AFL) and
Sharmila Lata (Border Police) were presented their awards for
Fijian Hosts of the Month for January to May respectively, by
the Permanent Secretary for Tourism Ms. Elizabeth Powell.
Each winner received a FIJIAN HOST of the Month award
from the Attorney-General & Minister for Tourism, Aiyaz
Sayed-Khaiyum, acknowledging their exceptional service, a
$250 grocery shopping voucher, and a dinner-for-two voucher
courtesy of Sotel Resort, Fiji Beach Resort & Spa and Star-
wood Resorts Fiji with ground transfers provided by Tour-
ism Fiji.
Fijian Hosts is a customer training and team-building initia-
tive of the Ministry of Tourism, which includes Nadi Airport
front-line team members from eight individual organizations.
Winners are selected from comment cards that are lled out
by international visitors and posted in Fijian Hosts kiosks that
are strategically located in Nadi International Airports depar-
ture and arrival lounges.
17 specially trained Fijian Hosts instructors were also an-
nounced.
These instructors attended the train-the-trainers session in
March this year and now qualify to conduct Fijian Hosts train-
ing sessions for the eight Fijian Hosts member organizations at
Nadi International Airport.
Permanent Secretary for Tourism, Ms Elizabeth Powell, con-
gratulated the monthly winners and the Fijian Hosts instructors
and said As the competition for international visitors increases
globally and in the region, it is through the personal interaction
of Fijians with our visitors that make their experience special
and memorable.
The Fijian Hosts program unites the Nadi Airport teams in
their efforts to proudly represent Fiji to international travellers.
We are equally proud of their efforts and appreciate how each
Fijian Host increases the wish of our visitors to return to Fiji.
Ms Powell also announced the Fijian Hosts Sports Week
scheduled from 14 to 19 July in Nadi which will be attended by
close to 400 Nadi Airport team members who have been trained
in the program.
In August this year, a refresher course will be held for current
Fijian Hosts where they will share learnings and experiences on
improving visitor experiences.
Ms. Powell also acknowledged the wide support of the lo-
cal tourism industry and explained that without their assistance,
the Fijian Hosts customer service training initiative could not
succeed.

Expo dates announced
Following the unprecedented success of the inaugural Fijian
Tourism Expo (FTE) last month, Tourism Fiji has announced
that FTE 2015 will take place in Fiji from 15-19 June 2015.
Tourism Fiji has purposefully selected dates immediately
prior to Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) 2015, to be hosted
in Melbourne, to make it easier for buyers from key long haul
markets to make the most out of their annual visits to the Pacic
region.
"The inaugural FTE exceeded all expectations. It attracted
an excellent number and quality of buyers from Fiji's major
source markets and stimulated working relationships between
complementary businesses here in Fiji, within and beyond the
tourism sector," said Tourism Fiji Acting CEO Ken Freer.
"Our opportunity for 2015 is to build on that success and
enhance the event, to showcase the great diversity and quality
of product available in Fiji to our existing and new international
industry partners.
"By timing FTE to run immediately prior to ATE, we hope
to not only attract more long-haul buyers to Fiji, but also give
them the opportunity to understand and experience the great va-
riety of tourism product we have to offer."
More than 150 international travel buyers from Australia,
New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom,
Europe, China, South Korea and India participated in the inau-
gural FTE last month. Buyers participated in 16,000 appoint-
ments with more than 230 operators and businesses exhibiting
at the event, which was the rst major event hosted by the new
Denarau Island Convention Centre.
Full details of the event program and registration process
will be released soon..

World Bank invests
in solar company
IFC, a member of the World Bank
Group, has made a US$2 million in-
vestment in Sunergise International
Limited, a company that supplies
solar rooftop energy across the Pa-
cic. IFCs investment will allow
Sunergise to scale up its business
and expand solar installations across
the Pacic region, with a focus on
Fiji, Solomon Islands and Papua
New Guinea, where a stable and af-
fordable power supply will provide
a boost to businesses and cut house-
hold costs.
Initially operating in Fiji, Suner-
gise owns and operates solar power
systems that are installed on custom-
ers premises. Customers enter into
an agreement for solar power supply
from the company for xed period
and typically enjoy lower costs.
Approximately 50 percent of
the power supply in the Fiji is die-
sel-generated and can readily be re-
placed with solar power, said Ajay
Raniga, an Executive Director of
Sunergise. IFCs support will en-
able us to remain competitive as we
expand our operations in Fiji and
across the region, where the demand
for clean and renewable energy re-
sources continues to grow. PRESS RELEASE
Access to power is a major chal-
lenge across the Pacic region, where
the energy market is characterized by
high electricity costs, heavy reliance
on imported petroleum products, and
unstable supply. The region is almost
completely dependent on imported
fossil fuels, but renewable energy
resources are abundant and most Pa-
cic countries receive an average of
seven hours of sunshine every day.
A key priority for IFC in the Pa-
cic is to increase access to reliable
energy sources and replace the use of
fossil fuels with renewable sources.
"Investing in Sunergise enables
us to support an innovative business
model that brings renewable energy
solutions to commercial operations
across the Pacic, said Sergio Pi-
menta, IFC's Director for East Asia
Pacic. Offering less expensive,
cleaner power to customers, with no
upfront investment required on their
behalf, will provide signicant ben-
ets in countries such as Papua New
Guinea and Solomon Islands, where
access to affordable, reliable and
sustainable power is a major busi-
ness impediment."

Radisson upgrades
school facilities
Children and teachers of
Nadi Primary School were all
excited when the management
and staff of Radisson Blu Re-
sort opened their very own
complete library and comput-
er lab recently.
Head teacher Mala Singh
thanked Radisson Blu for the
generous efforts and contribu-
tions towards the completion
and upgrading of their library
and computer lab.
Now our children will
get access to the library and
computer lab for the rst time.
This will surely enhance our
teaching and learning here at
the school, Mrs Singh said.
Radisson Blu general
manager Gerard Knight said
that they started the Adopt a
School program two- years-
ago where they have been
providing ten schools with
computers, libraries, station-
aries and supplies.
We raised money at the
hotel through our guests by
having frog races and duck
races once a week but most
importantly by voluntary do-
nations from guest accounts,
Mr Knight said.
At the Radisson Blu we
the team are passionate about
community work and our
focus right now is all about
education, to provide these
schools with more equip-
ment and to make sure that
the children come out with
great literacy skills and thats
why we are all about libraries
and computers, Mr Knight
added.

Mount Saint Marys Parish
in Martintar, Nadi on Friday,
June 6.
Speaking at the launching
ceremony, the secretary of
the Mount St. Marys Sevens

This would be the time
for the players to impress the
National Sevens team selec-
tors as well, Mr Fong said.
We are targeting 64-teams
inclusive of eight ladies and
eight oldies participating in
separate competitions to also
be part of this sevens event
with a total prize money of ten
thousand dollars.
This sevens tournament is
held just before the Fiji Rugby
Union (FRU) Sevens calendar
and IRB series and should
attract prominent teams and
players from around the coun-
try.
To provide the best enter-
tainment, there will be give-
aways for spectators and play-
ers as children under 12-years
will have a free entry to the
games.
Fong also acknowledged
the sponsors Nadi Town
Council, Marist Rugby Club,
Fiji Airways, Smugglers Cove
Resort, DRUA/One Proof De-
sign, Fiji Broadcasting Cor-
poration, Fiji Times and ACC
Quantum Energy who have
come onboard as sponsors.

Nadi Swimmers
stamp their mark
T.A. Learning Centre swimmers made their mark during the
National School Swimming Championships held at the Damo-
dar Aquatic Centre held from May 30-31.
Eight children were selected to represent the school. This is
the rst time for the school to send a contingent of swimmers to
such a meet given the little preparation time we had. T.A Learn-
ing Centre is a private school and is a co-educational institution
since 2004.
The swimmers with the guidance of coach Tuitavua Taniela
- a Fiji rep and the help of the parents: Mr and Mrs Nasir Khan,
Mrs Bose, Mr and Mrs Vakacola, Seini of Amal Restaurant
who worked tirelessly with the coach to achieve this feat.
The school was able to scoop one gold medal by Melania
Bose in the under 6, 50-meter breaststroke, one silver medal
from Rachael Bose in the girls under 6, 50-meter breaststroke
and a bronze medal to Rachael Bose in the girls under 6, 50-me-
ter backstroke.
The school was very excited because we have tasted victory
in all the categories, said Mr Alfred, the Principal and Founder.
We would like to thank all the sponsors for their kind con-
tributions and a special mention to Total Fiji and Khans Service
Station for the fuel.
Mr Alfred also thanked the swimmers for their great efforts
in representing the school and also this is the beginning of great-
er things to come.
This kind of exposure is also a learning curve for our chil-
dren, said Mr Alfred.
To celebrate this great achievement the school had a pot luck
and lovo lunch to thank the Almighty, swimmers, the parents
and everyone who had contributed to the success.
T.A.Learning Centre is also looking forward to next years
competition and is planning to return with greater achievements
to increase in their medal tally in the years to come, Mr Alfred
concluded.

Champions again!
Shop N Save Nadi suc-
cessfully defended their Vo-
dafone Fiji Fact title after
beating South Seas Logistics
Suva 1-0 in a mouth-watering
grand nale at Ratu Cakobau
Park in Nausori on Sunday,
June 29.
As expected, the match
started on a high as both
teams applied early pressure
showing their hunger to grab
Fiji Football Associations
rst major title of the year.
Strike-ace Ravinesh Karan
Singh, Sahil Dave and Sa-
karaia Naisua tried all way
possible but the stubborn
Nadi defenders Ilimotama
Jese, Eliki Ravosai and Ame
Votuniu kept their ways clear
while the best player of the
tournament goalkeeper Be-
niaminio Mateinaqara showed
some brilliant touches to deny
Suva getting past him.
Locked nil-all at break, the
second half became livelier
as Samuela Drudru and Na-
polione Qasevakatini made
Suva defenders work over-
time but they failed to nd the
net as the match was forced
into extra-time after 90-min-
utes of exciting football.
Lanky midelder Amani
Makoe broke the hearts of the
mighty Suva fans in the 104th
minute with his classic 35-
yard pile-driver which gave
the diving Suva goalkeeper
Emori Ragata no chance at all
to stop with Amani becoming
the hero for the Jetsetters in
their second consecutive Fiji
Fact win.
Lucky coach Kamal Swa-
my said the win was not only
his effort but it was the entire
Nadi family as a whole.
It was not just me but in
our Association it is said that
WE did it which includes
all the coaches, the manag-
ers, Mr Filipe who always
came to train the boys early
morning at 5.30am and in
the afternoon, the president
(Navneeda Gounder) who has
always been behind us, and
the loyal Nadi fans, Swamy
mentioned.
We knew that Suva would
come out ring in the extra
time to deny the match going
into penalty kicks and so we
told Amani to play from the
back taking long shots which
we had been practicing and it
paid off.
Swamy dedicated the win
to everyone who supported
Nadi which resulted in the
positive outcome for them.
I dedicate this win to the
loyal fans of Nadi plus the of-
cials, the executives of Nadi
soccer, the die-hard support-
ers namely Shop N Save, Tap-
poos, Dominion Buses, Tatas
who have been catering for
our food, our treasurer, man-
ager, our team director, and
everybody who worked hand-
in-hand thats why we say we
are we then only this win was
possible, Swamy added.
Nadi president Navneeda
Gounder believed the team
would bounce back after a
disappointing OFC Champi-
ons league campaign.
After the O-League ev-
erybody rated Nadi as a low
team as people used to tease
us everywhere but we made
a promise to the boys that we
will come-back in the tourna-
ments and win them, said
Gounder, who became emo-
tional while speaking to The
Jet.
The credit should go to
our boys as well as our spon-
sor Babu Rattan Deo of Shop
N Save because he had faith in
our boys and that led us to the
victory.
The prize-money will be
shared between the players
and after two weeks of rest,
our focus will move back to
the national league, Gounder
added.
Suva coach Gurjit Singh
congratulated Nadi for their
win and said his boys played
well but they badly missed the
service of midelder Nickel
Chand after he was sent-off
during the semi-nal match
against Labasa.
Nadi walked away with the
winning trophy and $15000
prize money while Suva as
runners-up got $4000 while
Labasa defeated Ba 3-0 to
claim the third prize of $1500.
Meanwhile, Nadis Be-
niaminio Mateinaqara was
awarded as the best player of
the tournament while Suvas
Ravinesh Karan Singh got the
golden boot award for being
the top goal scorer.
To commemorate the vic-
tory, a private thanksgiving
function was held for the play-
ers and their families at the
Nadi Civic Center as the team
now gets their focus back to
the national league getting
their mind set in order to qual-
ify for a back-to-back spot in
the OFC Champions League
next year.
Nadi was yet to face Rewa
in the Fiji Sun/ Skipper Tuna
national league encounter at
Prince Charles Park on Sun-
day, July 13 when this edition
went to press.
