Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition

INSTALLATION STEPS

SCOPE

A lab set-up procedure to install Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition on x86 based machine.
This document however does not talk about:

Initial network configuration


ActiveDirectory set-up to form any sort of Domain Controller

Preparation

You need to prepare the following items before you start installation.

1. Microsoft Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition Product Key


2. A Computer Name
3. An IP Address
4. An internet connection for updating and authenticating Windows

Detailed Steps - Installing Windows 2003 R2

1. Booting from CD-


ROM.

Boot from the CD ROM.


It will give you
“Windows Setup” screen.
Wait until next screen
comes up.

2. Welcome Screnn

The left is “Welcome” screen. It


will ask you you would like to
install or recover.

Since you are installing new


Windows 2003, simply press
[Enter].

3. License Agreement

This is the screen asking if you


agree to the license agreement.
Press F8 to proceed.

4. Partition

If you are installing operating


system for the first time, the left
should appear. It asks which
partition to install Windows 2003.
If you are planning to install
other operating system, here‟s
your opportunity to partition the
disk.
Otherwise press [ENTER].

5. Choose Format Type

Now the installer asks you how to


format the drive. You can use
quick format by choosing
selection with „(Quick).‟
However, if your hard drive has
never been formatted, you would
like to choose one without.
Unless you have special need to
use FAT32 file system, choose
NTFS.

6. Setup in progress.

The installer will copy the files for


a while. Wait until you see the
next screen to choose the regional
language.

7. Choosing Language

This screen allows you to


choose the keyboard type and how
numbers, date and time are
displayed.

Unless you need otherwise, press


[Next].

8. Personalization

Enter your name and organization.


This will be on your PC, but since
this is lab setting, it can be
anything.

Press [Next].

9. Product Key

Enter product key that comes with


CD-ROM or obtained from
MSDN.

Unless you need otherwise, press


[Next].

10. License Mode

Microsoft provides two different


license modes. This must reflect
to the number of license you
bought.

For lab setting, press [Next].

11. Computer Name

This screen asks you to type in


computer name and
Administrator‟s password.

This password is for local


administrator.

If you are mixing with pre-


Windows 2000 servers, this name
must be less or equal to 15 bytes
in length.

Press [Next].

11e. Password too weak.

Windows 2003 requires users to


follow certain password policy by
default. A failure to comply with
such policy result in the dialog on
the left.

However, installer allows you to


move on.

Unless you need otherwise, press


[Next].

12. Time Zone

This screen asks you the timezone


and the current time. Choose
appropriate timezone, and change
it to the current time.

Press [Next].

13. Installation in progress.

The installer start copying files.


Wait until the next dialog.

Press [Next].

14. Network Type

Unless you want to delete some of


the protocols that will come with
typical setting, it is not necessary
to choose “custom.”

Press [Next].

15. Workgroup or Domain?

This is where installer asks you if


you want to add this server to the
domain.

Because we are trying to prepare a


universal server that can be
configured as a domain controller,
please choose default.

Press [Next].

16. Installation in progress.

The installer start copying files.


Wait until the next dialog.

Press [Next].

17. First log on

This is the first log on.

Please click [CTRL], [ALT] and


[DELETE] keys at the same time.

18. Local Logon

Enter password for Administrator.

Then click [OK].

19. Second CD

You need the second installation


CD.
Put your CD in the tray.

Then click [OK].

20. Windows 2003 R2 Wizard

You will be asked if you would


like to see the new feature.

Click [OK].

21. Second CD in progress

Installer copies files for R2.


Wait until the next dialog comes
up.

22. Installation Complete.

The portion of 2003 R2


installation is complete.

Now click [Finish] to work on


patches.

Detailed Steps - Applying Patches

This section talks about the general patching procedure. If you are familiar with applying the
patch, here is the guideline.

1. Apply the patches until no further recommended patches are shown on Windows
Update.
2. If applicable, apply other patches, but they are not necessary.

N.B. The following steps have step numbers larger than 101 for future revision purposes.

101. Second CD

You are asked to complete two


tasks.

1. Updating the server so


that server is secure.
2. Schedule auto-update.

Also, you need to authenticate


Windows when you have time or
Windows will not work after 60
days.

Click “Update this server” link.

102. Warnings

For the first time you are running


Windows Update, Internet
Explorer will give you number of
warnings.

Click [OK] to close dialog boxes.

103. Enabling ActiveX

Because ActiveX is disabled, you


need to activate it by right-
clicking the yellow bar that shows
up on Internet Explorer.

Then click “Install ActiveX


Control” to move on.

104. Install Confirmation

Here‟s the confirmation to install


the ActiveX control.

Click [Install].

105. Windows Update Install

Click [Install Now] to move on.

106. Windows Update

Now Microsoft give you selection.

[Express] to patch most critical


and recommend patches.

Click [Express] to start installing


patches.

N.B. Applying patches


sometimes requires server reboot.
You will come back here to repeat
steps.

107. Checking progress

While you are applying the


patches, you see the progress bar
within your browser.

Wait until any dialog comes back


to ask you anything.

107e. Security Confirmation

When you are prompted by


Internet Explorer for trusted sites,
please click [YES].

108. Installation

Click [Install Updates] to start


installing patches.

108e. Agreement

Once in a while, you will be asked


to agree on the license terms.
Click “I Accept” to move on.

109. Install Progress

This type of progress bar is


something you see.

In case of Internet Explorer,


sometimes the installation dialog
is behind the browser. Keep eye
on it and follow the dialog.

Go back to step 106 until


recommended patches will not be
displayed.
